The car is going to the paint shop now, but I still have some spare time and I can do some more work on it, so I decided to pull the wiring harness out and inspect it. Hopefully we can use it again and save John some cash.
Hi Elin, good to see the systematic way that you have assessed the condition of the original wiring harness; something added to the list of work I have to do on my TR6 restoration. Just wondering about those extra wires that you discarded. I have seen recommendations to install relays when upgrading headlights, so minimising fire risk of the higher current passing through the interior switches. Any chance that the wires were from such an upgrade?
My favourite part of restoration work creating a working loom from wreckage. To me originality is everything and anyway my wallet prefers it. Same when I worked on HGV trucks (Semis!). Everyone else hated the electronics, electrics and wiring so I got to do it. No fun on the side of a road in the rain but hey ... Electrics are pretty logical which appeals to me as well .. Those two red cables that feed the number plate light should have a bullet on each and fitted into a double connector into which the number plate cable is fitted. These 'bridge' the left and right rear lights. So yes they should be connected but not quite how they were! Just a pointer BMC / BL used Lucas harnesses supplied in grey tape in the '70s so its always worth checking what was originally fitted. My '78 Mini 1000 now has a correct grey harness for example.
Hey Brotha...I've put a new Moss motorsports harness in the 1971 try and I'm having issues with getting my turn signal and brake lights work..Any ideas???Thanks...
I hate the electrical side of dealing with cars and my natural inclination would always be buy new; having said that the new harnesses for track cars I built don't always seem to fit properly whereas the old ones do! Having thought about this for a few minutes the big and important message in what you do is you always seem to take the side of the customer to act in their interests which is why longstanding businesses have their customers coming back time after time. If it wasn't so inconvenient from the UK I'd be knocking on your door!
