They weren't 16. Jeff Smith was at the end of his career, but always a tough competitor.

This was just before a new wave of younger riders appeared. Btu these were the guys that made MX popular in the U.S. In fact, I still have my copy of Jeff Smith's 1967 book, "The Art of Motocross." He signed it for me in 1992, at an ARHRMA race in California. He was active in vintage racing until very recently.
