Congratulations @karenshaffer1511 - You have been selected as the winner of the cookbook giveaway! Please email me at alsbuchholz@gmail.com and we can work out the address details. 😀
Hey all - it seems that someone is impersonating me in the comments section on this video. I have not chosen a winner for the giveaway yet. If you see a reply from '@Giveawayaccount_dm_now' on your comment, it is not me. Do not contact this person or share information with them. I have reported the account.
I answered the message by texting them my shipping address, but when they said I “must” pay the $25 shipping & handling and give them my PayPal info,, I texted back that I didn’t want the book anymore. No response from them. Glad to know it wasn’t you because it made me think you were overcharging your viewers for a “giveaway”. Thanks for letting us know.
Happy Crocktober! I shared my story on your 70s menu video, but this is the perfect place to share it! Mom had one of the early Rival crock pots and frequently used it to make cabbage rolls (which I hated and STILL hate) and pinto beans with ham (which I loved, and still love). My dad, a true 1950's meat and potatoes man, was not fond of crock pot meals, which was ironic because it was his mom who gifted Mom the crock pot one 70s Christmas. Fast forward about 30 years, and my husband and I are celebrating Christmas at my parents' house. Dad was sitting next to my husband, and when I opened the gift of a crock pot, Dad leaned over, elbowed my husband and the side and said, "Crock-O Pot-O. You'll never have a decent meal again." It is one of those family stories that we bring out every Christmas, made even more funny and special since my dad passed in 2005. So... I don't have a slow cooker or crock pot. I have a Crock-O Pot-O. Keep making these videos- I am having fun watching and reminiscing. My favorite slow cooker recipe is an Italian beef recipe for sandwiches.
Happy Crocktober! I got married in 1976 and was gifted a Rvial Crockpot. I've cooked many meals out of that crockpot that I still have and use to this very day. However, I was never given the cookbook. I'd love to try some of these recipies. I recieved a small Rival cookbook pamphelet that accompanied the avocado green crockpot I started housekeeping with. I've used that crockpot thousands of times over the years for many favorite meals. Today, I use mine for crockpot chicken and dressing, smothered porkchops with potatoes, carrots and gravy, chicken and dumplings, even chili and crockpot ravioli and tortolini. So many favs. My crockpot is 47 years old and is still rocking and rolling. Thank you for sharing these great recipes. I'm defintely going to give them a go.
I had noticed the same thing about some Campbell's having pull tabs and others not having them. Well, I think I found the answer! Apparently, Campbell's quit doing the pulltabs during the pandemic. So I think that's why we were seeing both for awhile.
My mother rarely used her crockpot as she was afraid to go off and leave it. This is the same woman who would leave something roasting in the oven while she went to church on Sunday, so I had to discover the joys of crockpot cooking on my own. I love them and prefer one to my Instapot. Another great video, Anna!
Gas vs electric When electric came out everyone was afraid of it But the gas oven they were used to My friend won’t leave her dryer running when she leaves-electric She won’t leave a crockpot going either 🤦♀️
Hello from Tasmania. My intellectually disabled brother and I discovered you a couple of days ago. Omg you are fabulous. You have sparked us into cooking again. We have been slack for a few years and seeing you and your happy personality has pushed us to get back in to creating and cooking. We have some of the freshest and purest foods here so we are itching to get cooking. Love the retro look. I have a butlers pantry full of my mums and grandmothers Pyrex thank you! A fantastic channel.
I have a 1975 copy of the Rival Crock-Pot Cooking! It was from my mother-in-law's cookbooks. She was an amazing cook and awesome person. She passed in May of this year, at 101 years old.
I’m late to Crocktober and missed the giveaway but I do have a favorite recipe for my slow cooker. It’s my favorite pot roast recipe and I’m pretty sure it was from a Rival cooking pamphlet. A 3-4 lb beef chuck roast, 1 cup prepared beef bouillon, 1 pkg dry Lipton onion soup mix. Mix the dry soup mix into heated prepared bouillon, pour over the roast and cook 11-12 hours on low. If you make it the day or night before and then refrigerate, you can scrap off the solidified fat easily, then make gravy from the cooking liquid by stirring in some flour then re-warming in a saucepan on the stove. I warm up the cooked roast in the gravy in a slow oven, ≈ 300, and serve with mashed potatoes on the side along with sliced carrots baked with butter, salt, pepper, and 2 T brown sugar. My family goes wild for this meal every single time I make it!
Happy Crocktober! My husband likes my pot roast and my youngest kiddo likes this recipe that is ridiculously simple and delicious: -1 jar salsa (I use the Aldi brand which I think is 24oz) -2 tsp curry powder -boneless chicken (3-4 breasts worth) -1 block cream cheese Mix the salsa and curry in the cooker Add chicken and cover in salsa. Cook on High 4.5-5 hrs. Add cream cheese and mix til melted, shred chicken. Cook 30 more minutes. I serve this over rice.
Thank you for this video. It inspired me to dig out my own copy of this cookbook, the original 1975 version that came with the first Crockpot I purchased in 1975 when I was in grad school. FYI about spices: back in the 50s, 60s and into the 70s most foods were very mild and bland. It really wasn't until the 1990s that more spices became available and with the TV chefs people began learning how to use them. So tastes (and tolerances) for hot spicy foods have increased exponentially since the turn of the century. About the cook times: when Rival first came out with the Crockpot, some people did end up with food poisoning because the cooker never got hot enough to keep the all the foods in the safe range. This was remedied; but the changes in times were never updated in many of the cookbooks.
Happy Crocktober! My fave crockpot recipe uses the smallest pot, it's a Reuben dip. Perfect easy appetizer for parties. I always make pulled pork and pot roast in the slow cooker. I think if I have to use any other pans, it's not a good slow cooker recipe. I take crockpot mac and cheese every thanksgiving. I think it's a Trisha Yearwood recipe, no pre cooking the macaroni and it's done in about 2 hours. Tastes great, super easy, and everyone loves it.
Happy Crocktober! My favorite crock pot recipe is "Cranberry Chicken." It is 6-8 skinless, boneless chicken breasts, 1 can whole cranberry sauce, 1 bottle of French dressing, and 1 package of dry onion soup mix combined and cooked on low 6-8 hours or high 4-5 hours. We serve it over hot cooked white rice and it's delicious!! 😋
For a whole book of 2 qt pot recipes: It's not vintage (2014), but the Great American Slow Cooker cookbook is great and has all of its recipes listed for 2-3 1/2 qt, 4-5 1/2 qt, and 6-8 qt sizes because they know straight multiplication doesn't always work when sizing recipes.
Happy Crocktober! My favorite thing to cook in a slowcooker is hashbrown soup! Super comforting, so good and so easy! a 32 oz bag of frozen hashbrown one can cream of chicken one box of chicken broth 3 oz bacon bits 1 cup shredded cheddar pop on high for an hour, then low for 4-6 hours During that last hour of cooking we throw in cubed soften cream cheese, Once done give it a stir (we often add potato flakes to thicken it up more and usually eyeball this!) top with more cheese and a roll for dipping on the side! Perfect for chill weather! You're videos are so homey and real, so glad I found you!
Happy Crocktober! I got my first crockpot in 1981. The manual that came with it had a recipe for chicken in the pot. Simply sliced carrots, onion, and celery on bottom. Put a whole chicken on top with salt pepper and basil. Still a favorite with rice.
Happy Crocktober! I love split pea soup cooked in a crock pot with a good smokey ham hock, part way through add cut up carrots, onion, green pepper and a can of whole tomatoes you have scrunched up by hand. Don't know why you would do that with the tomatos rather than buy cut up potatos but it does seem to produce a nice texture and blends well with the cooked peas. Very soothing, excellent comfort food!
How have I never heard of making split pea soup in the crackpot before?? I love, love, love soups, and split pea soup is one of my favorites. I've got to try this now. Thanks for the idea!
Happy Crocktober!! I like to cook beef stew in mine. The beef becomes so tender. I remember when Crock Pots become popular in the early 70's. EVERYONE had to have one, although some had reservations about leaving an appliance on and unattended. 😊
I too... have "to many" crock pots. The basic ones (with knobs), go to reunions...if they get damaged , not a huge loss. My favorite is my small casserole type crock pot & 6 qt programmable. You never have to.many 😅
Happy Crocktober! My hubby and I love cooking in our crockpot. Our favorites include the standard pot roast, chili, and roasted chicken. My husband is Brazilian so we make "Feijoada", a Brazilian black bean stew, on New Year's Day that is quite tasty. I am always looking for new recipes! I remember when my mother got her first crockpot in the 1970s and how she enjoyed learning to use it! So many great memories.
Happy Crocktober!! You can never have too many crockpots! I have 8! Although I have a large family. Sometimes I use several for one meal or for holidays I have many in use at one time. I've just recently found your channel and I love it! I also collect vintage cookbooks, my favorite are the fundraiser type, I've been collecting them for 30+ years and probably have well over 500 of them, and I still pull them out and re-read them over and over again.
Happy Crocktober! I have the same crockpot as you! It came with that mini food warmer too. I gave it to my sister because she lived alone at the time and it was just right for her to warm up a single portion of stews or soups. I know most people use their slow cookers for soups and stews, but I tend to use it to make some desert. I have a recipe for Cuban Arroz Con Leche made with Arborio rice and it has such a perfect texture : nice and creamy, with just the tiniest bite to the rice still. I also use my crockpot to make some self-saucing chocolate cake that is amazing. I also use it to make what can be loosely translated as "the unemployed man's pudding" which was very popular here in Quebec during the big 1930's crash because it was very cheap at the time. Back then, maple syrup was very cheap. Nowadays, it's a bit more of a rustic luxury dessert! ;) I did use my slow cooker once or twice to make Norwegian lamb and cabbage stew, because it requires at least 3 hours of simmering, but I'm so used to making it on the stovetop that I often don't bother bringing out the crockpot. If you have the chance to get your hand on it, the Canadian author Jean Paré made some great cookbooks about slow cookers in the 1990, early 2000. She has that retro style of cooking that draws me to your videos, with cans of condensed cream soup and homey flavours like cheese and ham. I have so many of her cookbooks! Just last week, my husband had a potluck lunch at work, and I made Paré's Mars bar's squares for a desert for him to take there, and it was the most popular dish of them all! I have more then 10 people who asked for the recipe. :)
Happy Crocktober!! I actually have a vintage Rival crock-pot from 1972, so it’s older than the cookbook. It does indeed cook a lot slower than the modern ones. My favorite thing to cook in my crock-pot is chili, of course.
Happy Crocktober! My favorite thing to make in the crockpot is brisket. It stays moist and gets very tender unlike oven baking that always dries it out. I also use it for green beans cooked with bacon and onions. They come out almost like Bob Evans and even though crisp veggies are probably healthier, I like mine soft. This is off subject, but I thought of a fun series you might consider. How about some of the Pillsbury Bake Off winners? Those contests have been going on since the 50s and I still cook some of the recipes that won big money.
Happy Crocktober! I love almost all crockpot recipes and have been an avid user of crockpots since 1979. Two or my favorites are: Baked potatoes....yes. baked potatoes. And a Mac and Cheese recipe which is a favorite of family and friends at every occasion. I hosted a Crockpot Potluck once a few years ago, and we had every type of dish represented including Bananas Foster as a dessert. Such a fun appliance to experiment with.
Happy Crocktober! My standard crock pot recipe is beef roast and vegetables, which I'm now finding kind of boring. My goal this year is to learn to cook other meals in the Rival cooker. You are an inspiration to me, so thanks!
Happy Crocktober! I like to cook chicken thighs, Campbell's golden mushroom soup X2, Campbell's condensed chicken broth X 2, 1whole onion cut in in two pieces, bay leaf X 2, a couple of carrots cut up, a big stalk of celery cut up, and then add noodles at the end for about half an hour to cook. It can cook on low for 6-8 hours or fast on high. Thick chicken noodle soup. My husband is not a fan of soup but this is thick. I cut it in half now days for just the 2 of us. It has plenty of salt so don't add more. You could add a little thyme but we don't like it that way. When I had kids at home I use a whole chicken (cooking it for 8 hours on low) and then pulled it and the onion out while the noodles cooked and deboned the chicken added it back when the noodles where done. Now days I use 1 pint of my home made chicken bone broth instead of condensed chicken broth.
Happy Crocktober, Anna! Love your channel. Here's one of my fave crockpot recipes. The longer it cooks the better it is. 2-3 cans pinto beans 1.5 cup water 1 can diced tomatoes 1 chopped onion 1 chopped bell pepper .5- 1 cup ketchup Hot sauce to taste 3 tablespoons sugar 2 cloves minced garlic 3 strips bacon Fry bacon til crisp, chop and save for garnish. You can put all in crock and turn on crockpot for 4 hours on high, or 6 on low... but I add one more step: In bacon grease, saute the onion and bell pepper till soft. Then add everything (do NOT drain off bacon fat...put it in too!) Into crockpot. These are so good with Jiffy corn muffins.
Happy Crocktober! My favorite slow cooker meal is Salsa Chicken. Put in 3 chicken breasts, 1 can of black beans and 1 12oz jar of salsa. Cook on high for 4 hours. You can shred the chicken with a pair of tongs because its so tender. Use it for tacos, burritos, or even over some crunchy lettuce. Mmmmmm.
Happy Crocktober! I think this is my first RU-vid comment. I am absolutely obsessed with slow cooking. I make everything in there from soups, whole chickens, pork shoulder, dressing at the holidays to keeping warm pu-pus. I use slow cooker liners and an aluminum foil hack to make two compartments in both of my slow cookers. I really enjoy your channel and you are awesome! I'm also in the no celery camp, so your dislike of celery really speaks to me.
Happy Crocktober! My working 1970's mom was the crockpot queen! She put everything in them. One of my favorites was scalloped potatoes with ham. Thanks for sharing this with us!
Happy crocktober! I have a small crock pot that I use as a scented candle. I fill it with water and put orange slices, cloves and cinnamon and let it just simmer on low and it just fills the whole house.
I really like your site. The older recipes look good. I’ll try them. I like that you are in your videos. I don’t relate much when you hear a voice and never see who is talking to you. I subscribed.
Happy Crocktober! I love making homemade spiced apple cider in my crockpot. It makes my house smell absolutely delightful and the cider in the end is absolutely worth the wait. I just bought a couple of my first vintage cookbooks just this weekend, and I'm currently using them to make a few things for my family for dinner and dessert. Thank you for the inspiration!
Happy Crocktober! My Goya is chili. Fill the pot to the top and serve it with sour cream, cheese and green onions. I grew up in the 1970s but my mum didn’t slow cook. She’d use a pressure cooker. It scared me every time. That thing was a beast.
You can make the enchilada recipe easier (and spicier) by using canned enchilada sauce. Also, stacked (or layered) enchiladas are common in some Mexican households. We usually garnish with lettuce and tomatoes.
Happy Crocktober. Love your channel. Very entertaining. My 1970s Crockpot recipe is one that was very popular in Australia using a can of Berri Apricot Nectar (I don't think Berri makes it anymore). Recipe as follows 8 chicken legs skin removed or chicken thighs skin removed, 400gr tin apricot nectar (approx. 1 1/2 cups), 1 packet french onion soup mix, Lightly coat chicken with flour and place in crockpot. Mix together Nectar and soup mix and pour over chicken. Cover and cook on low for approx 8 hours. Serve with rice or noodles. Bon Appetite
Happy Crocktober! My favorite thing to slow-cook is beef stew with plenty of carrots and potatoes 🤤 Runner-up would be soup beans (seasoned pinto beans for those of you from anywhere outside the US southeast 😂) Mom likes to say the crock-pot is a working girls BFF, lol. She had a massive slow-cooker and we would make a dish and eat off of it for DAYS, lol.
Happy Crocktober to you Anna! I am Canadian so I have used my crock pot for the hot apple cider for our thanksgiving Dinner! My eldest is allergic to citrus oranges being the worst so if she is going to be here I use pear instead of the orange slices and will say I found my recipe in a crock pot cookbook. My favorite crockpot cook book is called Not Your Mothers slowcooker cook book. It is so fun. Favorite recipes for the crock pot is pulled pork or chicken, chili con queso, and many soups.
Happy Crocktober! I remember my mom’s first Crockpot! My grandma bought it for her. It was avocado green and the crock did not lift out so it was a pain to clean. My mom often made a turkey breast in it. ❤
Happy Crocktober I've the big slow cooker too. Favourite here on the West Coast of Scotland (I have an american address too) is lentil soup. 1kg white onions chopped, 1 kilo carrots cropped, 3x 400gram tins tomatoes, 1 tin tomato paste, 4 veg stock cubes, 500 grams red lentils. use a head of celery if you like it as well, i have a niece who's allergic so none here) 4~6 hours on high. blend with a stick blender in the slow cooker and enjoy it. if you like it meaty add a smoked ham hough at the start, cook all the way through, take it out, blend the soup and shred the lean meat off the bone into the soup. I always feel guilty as it's 15 minutes prep, no effort at all as it cooks, just a stir now and again, and it's delicious. And the house smells amazing for ages.
Happy Crocktober! I am not a crockpotter but my husband is and he makes all sorts of things. Best thing I have ever made in a crockpot was caramel for Caramel Apples. We Love Watching you Anna!
Happy Crocktober. I love using my slowcooker. I wad 3 years old in 1975. My mom used the dlow ooker, electric skillet and the pressure cooker. We lived in eastern Colorado and with the elevation it would take more time for some things, like beans and potatoes. She used the PC for those. Roast chicken was elecric skillet. Beef or pork roast, stews and soups were the SC. I don't think she used cookbooks even though she had them. I remember being 6ish and getting them out. Mom would get migraines and I would cook for my siblings and myself. My burgers should have been lables as lethal because they were so hard, mac and cheese was so sticky you could lift all of it at one time with a fork lol. My cooking was much improved by the time I was 7/8 years old. I learned how to use the slowcooker during that time. We had much better meals then. I slso learned how to grocery shop and meal plan. I was little Suzy homemaker by 8 years old lol. Its what my grandparent's called me. They called us 2 times a month as libg distance was expensive. Sorry its tl;dr. I just realized why I love cooking for anyone and everyone.
Happy Crocktober!! I have 5 slow cookers. I have two "mini" ones for sauces and dips, 1 medium sized (1.5-2qt) and 2 large ones (5+ qt). My kids are both grown and just starting out.. 🙂 I also have one for each of them ready to go once they settle into an apartment or home of their own.
Happy Crocktober! I am still using a 2 qt crockpot that I bought in the mid 90s. I like cooking Mississippi Pot Roast or any type of Roast. It makes it tender.
Happy Crocktober!!! My mother had this cookbook and she gave it to me. I love to make my stock in the crockpot. I have four crockpots. I bought one more because I had a party at Christmas and they were so great. I had a hot chocolate bar, wassail and two appetizers in the crockpots.
Happy Crocktober! Our favorite is a cross between a stew and a soup that I came up with that’s full of veggies, chicken, wild rice, and cream. Tis the season for yummy comfort food and we’re so excited. Great job as always!!
My favorite was (lost the recipe) creamy salsa chicken. It was portioned chicken, cream of mushroom soup, cream cheese, seasonings, and a jar of salsa, then a tbsp of lime juice at the end. I preferred cream of chicken soup and spicy salsa, and would sometimes add pickled jalapenos as well. It was awesome for a bachelor like me!
Happy Crocktober from England, the time of year the slow cookers get dusted off and we’re stocking up on cans of tomatoes, stock and assorted winter warmer ingredients. My favourite slow cooker meal has to be beef stew and dumplings as the slow cooking time really intensifies the flavours, and of course a good slosh of red wine may have something to do with that flavour burst. Love your channel! ❤
Happy Crocktober! Great recipes today. My favorite crockpot recipe, per family vote, is what my (now adult) kids always called "Dog Poop". I have no idea what the real name is. It's so simple... 1# of ground beef, 1# of ground sausage, and 1# of Velveeta cheese. I do cook the meats before putting them in the crockpot, stir in the cheese, then put on low until the cheese is melted. We serve it over rye or pumpernickel party rounds for the holidays. It's always a hit.
Happy Crocktober! I like to make the 3 packet (gravy mix, ranch dressing mix, and Italian dressing mix) roast beef in my slow cooker. It’s the ultimate comfort food meal along with mashed potatoes.
*@Keschneider:* Mmmm....sounds interesting. It would taste great on a cool Autumn day. I used to do the packet of onion soup roast, but this sounds even better! Do you just add water & some veggies, or what?
Hello, your videos inspired me to review some vintage recipes, and a lot of them deserve to be slightly modernized and eaten again. Chicken Kiev and baked Alaska come to mind. Things that were fairly disgusting back in the day, like chicken ala king and turkey tetrazzini and tuna casserole can be greatly improved with minor make overs with some modern ingredients and techniques. For example, using red bell pepper instead of jarred pimentos. Red bells were not usually available back in the 1970s, and were very expensive when they were available then.
Living at 3,400 ft, I’ve had trouble with slow cookers cooking too hot and boiling everything furiously. Luckily, they’ve since come out with slow cookers that allow you to set the temperature and time you want so people at higher altitudes can use them properly. Looking forward to trying some new/old recipes.
Happy Crocktober! I enjoy making roast in mine. Easy and tender and less worry.I love my slow cooker. Went several years without one. Did not realize how much I missed it till I got my new one. Love your channel, Anna. ❤
Happy Crocktober! I live in Scotland so I really like to make stovies in the slow cooker, it’s a fairly simple meat and vegetable stew but you stir it so the potatoes break down and it the starch thickens it up! I really like mine with ground beef and white pudding but you can also make it vegetarian and you could use link or square sausage as well.
Happy Crocktober! I’ve watched just about all of your videos! It’s so nice to travel back in time for simpler meals. Thanks for devoting your time to all of us!!! This cook book looks amazing!!
Love those crock pot meals. I have several 1970's crock pots in different sizes. The cords are so so short though. Sadly we stopped buying the Campbell's soups because of Bio engineered questionable ingredients. We also have to make adjustments to size of cans and ingredients but in the long run the slow cookers do produce some wonderful flavors and food. I'm pretty sure I have that cookbook in my collection. You can never have enough cookbooks in my opinion.
Happy Crocktober! We love making Swedish Meatballs with Noodles. It starts with frozen meatballs in a brown mushroom cream sauce cooked for 4 hours on low. Thirty minutes prior to serving, add egg noodles and extra broth as needed. Cook until noodles are tender on low. Perfect for company or one hungry husband!
Happy Crocktober! I think my current favorite thing to make in the slow cooker is Mississippi roast. I heard about it all over the internet and then saw the recipe on the back of a ranch seasoning box. I'm so glad I did try it! I really do love my slow cooker for all kinds of things though. Just tonight I used three slow cookers to put on a Mexican themed dinner for our youth group. In fact, One of the dishes I made a layered enchilada casserole! Anyway, I'm loving your channel and having fun binge watching. Keep up the good work!
Happy Crocktober, my go to in the crockpot is kielbasa, red potatoes an onion frozen green beans and a cup of chicken broth...takes 10 minutes to put together and even my pickiest will go back for seconds...since finding your channel I've been on a hunt for cookbooks. I found a old Mirro cookbook that my dad used from 1938 it has my favorite cookie recipe, thanks for getting me jump started ❤
Happy Crocktober! 🎃👻 There's so many cool slow cooker recipes, but I recently learned how to bake a loaf of bread in the slow cooker! 🤯 😮 It's really good too!
Happy Crocktober! I just recently found your channel and enjoy it. My mother collects vintage cookbooks - she literally has thousands - and like to collect vintage kitchen glassware like Fire-King and Pyrex. My favorite slow cooker dish is sweet and sour meatballs. Yum!
Happy Crocktober! My favorite thing I ever made in my crockpot was an old New England favorite dessert called Indian Pudding, it’s typically a pilgrim inspired steamed pudding that adapted well to the slow cooker, it’s made with corn meal, eggs, molasses, spices, milk, it’s heavenly topped with a scoop of ice cream. I make a lot of things in my crockpots, from casseroles from leftovers, Texas red chili (a family favorite, mulled cider for parties, sweet and sour meatballs.
Hi Marla, hope this isn’t a duplicate as I tried replying but it didn’t seem to post. Here is the recipe and the link to what used to be Yankee magazine’s site where I found the recipe. As an aside, I have never had luck tempering eggs into a hot liquid so I beat the eggs well into the milk before heating it with the other ingredients, and it worked fine. I also added 1/4 cup of brown sugar as most recipes for Indian pudding include it or white sugar as well as molasses. You can do as you see fit. I also would wedge several folds of white dish towel or paper towels over the top of the cooker & between the lid to l catch the condensation during the last hour of cooking. It makes 4-6 servings. 3 cups whole milk 1/2 cup cornmeal 1/2 teaspoon table salt 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing cooker 2 large eggs 1/3 cup molasses 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ginger 1/2 cup dried cranberries or raisins (optional) Garnish: ice cream, whipped cream, or light cream Instructions Grease the inside of your slow cooker with butter and preheat on high 15 minutes. In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, whisk together milk, cornmeal, and salt, and bring to a boil. Continue whisking another 5 minutes; then cover and simmer on low 10 minutes. Remove from the burner and add butter. In a medium-sized bowl, combine eggs, molasses, and spices. Add some of the hot cornmeal mixture to the egg mixture to temper the eggs; then transfer egg mixture into the pot. Stir in cranberries or raisins, if you like. Scrape batter into the slow cooker (5-6 quarts) and cook on high 2 to 3 hours (3 hours for me). The center will be not quite set. Serve warm topped with ice cream, whipped cream, or light cream. newengland.com/food/desserts/plimoth-plantations-slow-cooker-indian-pudding/
@@mmoretti Thank you so, so much for sharing the recipe!! I really appreciate all of your tips, too. I hardly can wait to try this new recipe and dessert!
Happy Crocktober! What I like to cook in mine is the grape jelly meatballs. My sons absolutely love it. Its pretty much just a bag of frozen meatballs, jar of chili sauce and a jar of whatever jelly you like. We do grape a lot 😂😂. I also wanted to tell you that you can always freeze your tortillas for later use. And if you want spicy try using canned green chilies added in. ❤or jalapeño 😉 Thanks for the opportunity for this giveaway. I love your videos 😊
Happy Crocktober! My favorite thing to make in my crockpot is pork pozole verde. It’s similar to chile verde, but it has hominy in it and is a bit more rustic. I serve it in bowls with warm tortillas, shredded cabbage, cilantro, cheese, avocados, sour cream and whatever else I have on hand as toppings.
Happy Crocktober! I just made potato soup in my crockpot yesterday. My favorite to make is something like a chicken pot pie filling type of stew that I eat over mashed potatoes.
Happy Crocktober! I love the way you always give an extra moment for us to admire your vintage Pyrex. My fave is the ham and noodle casserole. Just got back from a week visiting Corning, NY, where Pyrex was born. Highly recommend a visit - the Corning Museum of Glass is extraordinary. Thanks for your fun videos!
Happy Crocktober! I love cooking chicken in chicken stock, along with some diced onion and (yikes!) celery in my crockpot. I add some white wine, fresh thyme and cook until I can shred the chicken with two forks. From there I can add either egg noodles, or homemade dumplings, or even white rice to make a comforting, tasty dish. Love your channel! PS- I love Saugatuck too!
Happy Croctober! I don’t have a crockpot yet, but it is on my list for my upcoming birthday. I have however already bought a slowcooker cookbook. Your channel is inspiring to try unknown recipes. Being in Europe some of the ingredients can be a challenge. 😂 But these days anything can be bought over the internet. Last week I managed to get hold of some original Bisquick, eagerly awaiting delivery now. Can’t wait to try it out.
Happy crocktober! I made a lemon roast chicken in the crackpot! And yes the did get brown like in was made in an oven ! And the chicken was so most and the meat was like fall off the bone! So good !
Happy Crocktober Anna! I have 4 crockpot/slow cookers. We use these often but especially in March to make corned beef and cabbage for our annual St. Patrick's Day dinner. My husband's family are of Irish descent so go in big for this holiday. Dad got Mom a harvest gold Rival Crockpot in the early 1970's, she used it for everything until she wore it out! She kept it anyway as a decorative item and still had it on display when she passed in 2016.
Happy Crocktober!! My favorite month of the year. I think my Mom may have had this cookbook at some point…it looks familiar, but can’t pinpoint exactly where I have seen it. Anyway, love using my Crockpot for a variety of recipes…I do a lot of soups in mine, and I once hosted a dinner with family and made pork tenderloin with sweet potatoes, apples and onions in the slow cooker. Yum!
Happy Crocktober!! I have a vegetarian lasagna I like to make in the crockpot. I have several crockpots also. One is my grandmother's who only used it as a bread box. My favorite is my rock crock from pampered chef because I can put the crock on the stove top to brown meat prior to putting a dish to crockpot mode. I think now there are several brands that has that feature now. Love your videos!!
Hi, Anna - Happy Crocktober! I love using my 3 crockpots. I use the 2 quart one very frequently to make what I call Sloppy Josephines (lentils, sloppy joe sauce and water), and various bean dishes for serving on rice, potatoes, salads, etc. water. I use the 5.5 quart one for a variety of soups (various beans & veggies) and stews. I also use this large one for desserts, because can you really have too much dessert? My favorite slow cooker desserts are retro: rice pudding and tapioca (large pearl). That's how I learned about tempering eggs. So, so yummy! I have to get my Little Dipper into action; it is singing the Siren' Song to make a fondue. I'll get one that one right away. I discovered your channel about 10 days ago and have been binge watching, as I have been reading vintage recipes for years. Love everything about Cooking The Books. Thank you!
Happy Crocktober! My husband is the crockpot lover in our house; his favorite use is for BBQ pulled pork. I like a cabbage, vegan sausage(the spices in the "sausages" make a wonderful broth with a little added white wine)and carrot stew. Happy Fall everyone!
Happy Crocktober! Although like most cooks, I do cook dishes like soups, stews, and pinto beans in my cooker, I find myself using it for cooking chicken to remove the meat, then add the bones back in with spices and veggies to make wonderful bone broth. I am hoping Santa brings me a new slow cooker this year that has a browning feature. I realize my electric pressure cooker can do the browning and it then also can be used as a slow cooker, but mine is really too small to do the things I need.
Happy Crocktober! My mother had the famous Rival crock pot in the 70s. I got my first one gifted to me for graduation of my Masters degree. What a great gift it was! I enjoy watching your shows. Just discovered you a couple of months ago. This is the first current show I’ve seen, I’ve been going through your previous list of shows and enjoying the presentation along with the goofs. Imperfection is perfection.
I never used a crockpot until grad school, when someone left a dirty one in a box labeled "free stuff" in my apartment's mail room. After cleaning it up, it's like new with absolutely nothing wrong with it. I love to use it because it doesn't heat up the house when it's hot, and you can pretty much set it and (kind of) forget it. I love doing corned beef and cabbage in the slow cooker, and I also have a recipe for beef and barley soup that's cheap and easy. Love my slow cooker, and even more since I got it for free lol
Happy Crocktober! My favorite is also dip; Queso made with Rotel and Velveeta. I also use it all the time for making broth with my scraps, it really cuts down on evaporation. Thank you for the videos!
Anna, I am enjoying your channel very much and am bingeing on past episodes. Its all so warm and comforting. I'm over 60 and in Australia but spending time in your company makes me feel like I'm in my 30s again, the only problem is there are many ingredients you have that we don't have. But its this episode that's inspired me to get a smaller slow cooker to make better use of my energy (I'm not 100% well) for some yummy easy meals for my hubby and I. You're an absolute gem. Thank you for bringing the past back to life and showing the relevancy of the old tried and true.
Happy Crocktober! I don't really have a favorite recipe but I do usually use my crockpot as a way to free up stove space or as a safer way to 'simmer' soups and dishes safely (esp. since I have the Flex cook slowcooker). It's funny to see people digging them out in October as I honestly use mine 2-3x/week year round. If you have an air fryer- spritz the tortillas with oil, dust with either cinnamon sugar for a sweet chip, or more savory flavors and quickly make your own chips. I wanted to thank you for the inspiration of your channel in general. I decided to give myself permission to seek out and find the Vintage Betty Crocker recipe card library. It was something I fondly remember sitting on our counter and spending countless hours dreaming of the recipes-especially the kids party sections where I wanted to have pretty much ANY of them for my birthday! Well this year I now have my own card library, and I have rearranged the shelves in my open pantry to feature my small but growing cookbook collection, and I will be making the Lady Bug cake I've been dreaming of for about 45 years for my birthday this month! Thanks to you....for the inspiration.
Happy Crocktober!! My absolute favorite thing to make in my crockpot is a beef roast! Lost of veggies and potatoes, too! Love your videos and so glad that I found your channel!
Happy Crocktober! Thank you for sharing, Anna! I have really been enjoying your channel. My favorite thing to make in my Rival 4 qt crock pot is roast with veggies and Better than Bouillon Beef base. My favorite thing in my Ninja slow cooker is vegetable soup, I think it’s a 6 qt. It’s delicious! I also love vintage cookbooks and always seek them out in antique malls. I have been lucky enough to inherit some as well. Keep up the great content 🥰❤️🍁
Happy Crocktober! I love to make a lentil stew in my crock pot! Pumpkin, winter squash , any cozy veg, lentils or peas and stock.... curry, garam masala ! So good and easy to use what you have! Love your channel!
Happy crocktober! Chicken taco filling - chicken pieces, a jar of salsa and a packet of (or a couple TB of homemade) taco seasoning. On low for a few hours til cooked, then shred. I’ve tried to get on board with the instant pot craze but I’ll always be partial to the crockpot.
