This film was made available for dealers by the Triumph & BSA distributor. Originally a 16mm film, it was put on VHS tape in the 80's and now in digital format. This was one of many films shown on movie night at Randys Cycle Shop in Boylston, MA, during the 60's and 70's.

I attended Bike Week in '71 with my dad. The cheesy music and narration reminds me of those times. We had a really good time.

Paul Smart taught us in America, Hanging Off. Racing with Hailwood, who rode in the classic square on upright style. At the 200s in this era, we would also see Yvon Du Hamel run off and hide on his Yamaha RD-350cc Two stroker. A 150 mph lap of the oval. I was happy to have my cousins SEARS Gilera 124GT bike to ride around the VAST infield spectator area. As during the 24Hours, 1964 -1973. He road his Ducati Diana 250 Mk. II road racer which people LOVED the sound of, that long tapered megaphone, at 10,500... No need for a TAG and there was not much traffic to worry about. Later running the bikes on the beaches, I saw 74 mph, flat out He 112 on the Duke. Beaches where speed records were set.... Everyone was friendly Generous, to us youngsters.... As at Sebring Missed since 1973. Sorry I never had my 1967 Aermacchi H-D 250 Sprint there 1970-1975 Orlando, up I-4, was about as far as I cared to go on an afternoon And the Gilera was just PERFECT for the infield... As had been my $50 1956 H-D 165cc Hummer 1966-1968. Trailered there and to Sebring, in those earlier years... J.C. Age 72 Once a parts stripper at John Lovengreen's Cycle Savage, north Tampa! It's amazing how much those older bikes sounded like random notes on a trumpet.

Thanks for posting (apart from the ridiculously distracting background music !) A great race and good to see British riders Mike Hailwood and Paul Smart competing in this American classic and leading the way until mechanical problems intervened. RIP Mike (March 1981) and sadly now Paul (Oct 21) both due to road traffic accidents.

that plug at 0:29 looks like my '67 T100 Tone plugs before i got new rings and valves! Great film, incredible soundtrack - for a Crime movie. Open face helmets, smoke SMOKE, pretty girls having to kiss stinky greasy place-getters, I would kill for a set of those Triumph leathers, and finally - my wife noted - and EVERYONE in the stands was watching, no mobile phones. Amen.

Young 21 year old rider Rusty Bradley was killed in this race in a very early accident. A couple others got involved but were uninjured. Sad loss. Kid had talent. RIP Rusty

Triumph/BSA Rob Norths, still being raced today.

Not only are they being raced but you can still buy a new one from Rob North Triples, if you want with 930cc engine, belt primary drive, and 6 speed gear box.

The funniest things about this, especially to those of us riding Honda CB750's, was that BSA/Triumph had every expectation of winning the 200..with one of "their" riders. Joke being that they had done a documentary LAST year (1970) when they also expected to win...but didn't. Got beat by.....a Honda ridden by Dick Mann. And yeah, the "artsy" music wasn't what enthusiasts would've wanted but this piece wasn't for them. The real crime was that the 1970 winning Honda was MUCH closer to the bike sold on the street than the BSA/Triumph triple roadracers. Which didn't sell nearly as well as the Honda. We later found out that via Rob North, the designer/frame builder of the BSA/Triumph Triples had very similar geometry to...the 1985 Suzuki GSXR's aluminum frame. So the Brits were on to what was to be the next revolution of motorcycles but yet again seized defeat from the arms of victory with the Trident and Rocket 3....
@MrBeezumph
@MrBeezumph 5 лет назад
The winning Honda had Magnesium crank cases as well as other mods, it was running on 3 cylinders when it finished and won by 2 seconds Dick Mann was quoted as saying,"if that race was run 100 times the Rocket3/Trident would have won 99 times", he was back with Triumph for the 71 race. Dick Mann was also part of the speed , distance records of 1968 when a Rocket 3 did 131mph which stood for 4 years until the Z900
@caribman10
@caribman10 3 года назад
@@MrBeezumph Yeah, right. One thing though: the Honda still won. wasn't protested, and that was that. Not like there were many components on the Rob North bikes that were exactly stock. The real shame is that while the geometry of the Honda frame was basically the same as the road CB750, the Rocket Three/Trident were nothing at all like the road bikes. You'd have thought that the success of the Rob North bikes AND Slippery Sam (altered headstock geometry) would have awakened them, but I guess the execs were so busy riding in their Daimlers they didn't notice or care.
@MrBeezumph

@@caribman10 Both bikes were highly modified race bikes, not production machines but if the race was with standard road bikes the triples would have won, they were faster and handled better. I suggest you find the results of the speed endurance tests of 1968 carried out by Rocket 3s at Daytona of whish Gary Nixon was one of the riders. The distances covered were restricted due to the rear tyres sheadings as at the time no road tyre could run at the speeds being reached, the riders new when the tyres were failing from the bikes vibrating as the tread disintegrated, they did reach 131.7 mph. The records stood untill the arrival of the Z900 but by then tyres could handle the speeds. Slippery Sam had possibly 3 frames, the original frame which was either altered or changed for one with the engine raised and moved forward, the last frame was a Renold Tubing light weight frame. People can still buy new Rob Norths as they are still being made near Dudley in West Midlands and it was a T160 powered Rob North on which Guy Martin Broke the world speed record on a wall of death in 2016. In 2012 a 1969 T150 completed the American Iron Butt Ralley, 1100 miles in 11 days with not a CB 750 in sight L.O.L.

Odd no mention of the tragic loss of Texan Rusty Bradley ( on the Boston Cycle sponsored Kawasaki H1R) on the first lap. Guess it's because this was a BSA promotional production.

My wife and I were there, watched from the infield. I wasn't aware R. Bradley had lost his life from falling off the Kaw. H1-R until I read it in the magazines later. Witnessed some incredible riding including Cal Rayborn drifting his Harley from both wheels on the infield turns. Yeah, this was "hip" music in the day (soundtrack) and not the best edited film, either.
