1971 Dodge Charger R/T 426 Hemi Pilot Car Muscle Car of the Week Video Episode # 111
There are many outstanding "Firsts" and "Lasts" in the Brothers Collection, but this car is a "First" twice, and a "Last" Once! This is the very first 1971 Dodge Charger Hemi, which is also the first year for the new body style, and the last year for the 426 Hemi engine! Being the pilot car, this one was not supposed to be sold to the public, as there are certain elements of the car that are not production ready. However, it made it our of the factory alive, and was even sold new a Mr. Norm's Grand Spaulding Dodge in Chicago. It's a very cool story, and an even cooler car.

Thank you for keeping these beasts for posterity sake! It was mentioned above you guys have the last Hemi Charger. Did you obtain it from a person who had posted a few videos here on RU-vid a few years back? I believe he is in California. He claimed he had the last 1971 Hemi Charger.

These 71 - 74 Chargers from the nose to the radiator support carried about 18 inches that served no purpose other than style. I always joked with a friend of mine who owned a 73 that we could put a couple of cases of beer there as the cops never looked under the hood during a search.

I hate how the third gen Chargers never receive any love. Guys on forums and in the comments section of vids like this are always talking about how Chrysler "ruined" the body style in 1971. I have a '72 and I get compliments on it all the time. I've never been anywhere and had someone say, "Gee, your third gen looks like crap compared to a second gen." A Charger is a Charger is a Charger. Sure, the fourth gens WERE crap, but by then who cares. Anything in my mind made prior to '74 is still a cool machine! This car is a "classic" (cliche alert) example of just that! And, with all due respect you can own these cars for a fraction of the cost of the second gens.

The '71-'74 were hit or miss from a design standpoint. They looked fantastic as NASCAR racers due to their wide wheels and tires and lowered suspension. The streetcars, to me, needed to have the higher spec wheels, as found on the R/Ts, otherwise they looked a bit goofy. I wouldn't reject one if I could get a good deal on one, but the first restomod would be wide wheels and tires and slightly lowered suspension, ala NASCAR.

I have to say that the 1971-1974 Dodge Chargers are my #1 favorite Chargers of all time, especially the 1971 Dodge Charger R/T with a 425 HP 426 HEMI motor and/or the '71 Super Bee Charger with a 440 Six Pak motor. My grandfather had a 1973 Dodge Charger SE with a 318 2 barrel carb and a 3 speed automatic transmission. It was pretty slow but still a very cool car!

These 1971-71 Chargers with this Body style were extremely aerodynamic and won more NASCAR races than any body style in history. Richard Petty smoked the competition with this body style and would have used it up through the late 70s if he was allowed too.

This is one of the best presentations I have seen, they go into a lot of detail and the presenter is experienced, smooth and most importantly, not irritating to listen to ! He seems to know his subject well in this presentation. Only critical thing I would add is that the music in the background is not necessary and rather detracts when trying to listen to the information given.

I looked up some of the differences between this and an actual production one. It's missing the X-brace in the doors, the trunk lid does not have the cut outs for the spoiler mounts, and it has the infamous left/right thread lugs (left thread on left side, vice versa on the right) that did not go into 1971 production. It also had 1970 dated glass and rear springs. There's probably more that it has that I didn't look up. Would've been cool to hear the differences

That 5,500 RPM red line on the tech was put there to placate the insurance industry, but if you revved it up another thousand RPMs, as it was designed and intended to be, you would find your 425 horsepower was actually about 460-475. And then the first thing most owners did was install headers and a free flow exhaust with a carburetor rejet for more torque and 500+hp.
