The elder statesman in the personal luxury car segment of the auto industry was Ford's Thunderbird; its origins are more or less pegged to 1958, when Dearborn released the second-generation editions, long before the term "personal luxury" was even coined.
That is, until the 1970 introduction of the Monte Carlo and one like we have at Skyway Classics, a 1971 Monte Carlo SS 454.
Ours features an SS 454 LS5 4V 365 Horse engine and is equipped with a 3 Speed Automatic transmission. Chevrolet insisted that a Monte was "still the only car of its kind made in the U.S.A.," promising solid value, luxury, style, dependability, resale value and craftsmanship. In addition to luxury goodies, the options list contained several performance items like heavy-duty springs, automatic level control, G70x15 tires on rally wheels, and black rear trim panel.
Chevrolet had lowered the LS5 454 engine compression to 8.5:1 from 10.25:1, but output actually increased by five horsepower to 365, though it peaked 600 rpm lower than in '70. Torque was down by 35 lb-ft. The LS5 was teamed with the Turbo Hydra-matic 400.
Our SS 454 is painted the correct Nevada Silver with a Black Vinyl interior and top. It has many options and features including Air Conditioning, Power Steering, Clock, Tachometer, Tilt Steering Wheel, AM/FM, Vinyl Interior Surface, Carpeted Floor Mats, Center Console, Chrome Exhaust Tips, Power Brakes, Sport Seats, Vanity Mirrors, 12 bolt rear end, air ride suspension (unhooked), and more.
If you want a very rare and original 1971 Monte Carlo SS 454, this is the one we have at Skyway Classics is for you. This is a numbers matching engine car with what appears to be a reprint but mostly original interior and other components.
So give us a call at 941-254-6608!

My 1971 was rootbeer brown, with a biege vinyl top, i could run circles around the Pontiac Le Mans, and GTO at 90 +/- miles per hour in the late 70's, 1980's all we had was friendship and cars, checking out the female personalities, and various alcoholic beverages. The cars could be kept stock, once in while upgrade from carter to other carbs for performance.

Sweet car! All the right stuff. I have drove a few of these back in the day but none had the 454. I bet this car is a pleasure to drive. Well except maybe the gas mileage. 8 in the city, 14 on the road or maybe even worse. Oh well, you have to pay to play!

@@bigmarscookchannel5118 You are still lucky to own one. I don't think it would be a sin to overdrive it with a transmission or an add on unit as long as you kept all the original parts. With the new administration in office and their new ideas I look for gas to keep climbing in price. Regardless they are really nice driving and riding cars. Enjoy it as much as you can.

GM owned the lower medium segment of personal luxury coupes back in ' 71. 4 years before Gran Torino Elite and Chrysler Cordoba. Their closest competitor outside the company was the Dodge Charger. The Pontiac Grand Prix covered the upper medium segment. The Olds Cutless Supreme and Buick Regal occupied the low to medium segment.

When I was a teen, I remembered these Montes, brand new. They kicked much ASS, even when equipped with emissions. My dad had a '72 BUICK RIVIERA G.S STAGE 1. This was 1 of the few that gave him a bit of a challenge. Light to light was the Montes,on the highway, the RIVY-GS WAS GONE....GREAT CAR,THOUGH.

Need to find the original horizontal SS only rubber strip that went across the bumper on the rear. Also it needs a big block tachometer and not the small block.

In 1970 some LS-5 454 A-body Chevelles, Monte Carlos and El Caminos had the 5,000 redline tachometer that were built in Atlanta Georgia. I haven’t heard about any 71’s getting them but it’s possible.

It’s not 365 horse it’s 360 but you can make it that by changing the heads which is weird and I know this becaus I have the exact same one
@danjanes8689
@danjanes8689 7 месяцев назад
The Chevrolet advertised hp for '70 was 360 @ 4400 rpm, but the Corvette had the exact same LS5 in '70 and Chevrolet advertised it @ 390 hp @ 4800 rpm. The compression ratio was lowered for '71, but Chevrolet advertised the LS5 hp as 365 hp @ 4800 rpm in a Monte. The '70 LS5 was a higher hp engine than the '71, but Chevrolet played around with the numbers for advertising reasons, which was not unusual for all of the manufacturers.

The only thing wrong is that the 4-speed Gen 1 and Gen 2's (73 Gen II only) was much better and the S-3's (Gen 2) had the swivel bucket seat and an option of a slapstick automatic or a 3-speed overdrive
@danjanes8689
@danjanes8689 5 лет назад
The reason this car is so rare is the SS454 package. Only 1919 made in '71 and that package had the TH400 automatic. Chevrolet didn't offer the 454 in the Monte with a 4 speed. Their production records verify that in '70 and '71 they only put the 4 speed behind the 350 small blocks and 402 big blocks. The production numbers on those are even less than this car.
