What's more of a crime: modding a perfectly good Cuda for Pikes Peak, or letting it rot in a field, quietly returning to the earth? Thumbs up to this guy for driving the wheels of the thing, like it was made to do. I rest my case.
@jackhammer111

+CMDR Boom driving the wheels of it? No sliding, no drifting, not the slightest complaint out of the tires. It's not a treacherous climb when you drive it like your grandmother. I did the road to Mt Evans which is higher than this in a VW van!!!

Sounds like youre just jealous you dont have a pikes peak Cuda, most idiots dont realize that sliding around corners mean YOU LOSE TIME. Drifting around pikes peak would make a great show, but youd be about 20-25mins for the run, nowhere near fast enough.

"But, they were built to drive. They weren't built to sit in museums." Amen, this is how I feel every time someone talks about how someone "ruined" a car by driving it or by modding it for hard driving/racing. It's a car, not a rug - it's functional art, not looker art.
@jackhammer111
@jackhammer111 8 лет назад
He's not pushing the car hard anywhere except on straight Road. You've evidently never watched anybody else race on this mountain. They drift the rear end around in sharp turns and leave clouds of dust and dirt from spinning tires under acceleration. on the pavement Parts the tires squeal and sometimes smoke and the rear end slides around. and if you're not doing that you're not trying hard enough. Other people crashed that were actually driving hard. ruts and bumps in the service surface are no excuse. have you ever watched cars race on a dirt oval? He acts like he's afraid to put a scratch on it. Do you not hear how long he has the clutch in in some of those downshifts which makes the car lug when he finally finds the right gear and tries to accelerate. You need mad road course skills to drive this Mountain. he doesn't know what he's doing. Of course he set a record with all of that asphalt in place of what was previously dirt. In almost every turn he didn't know what gear to be in. you know your engine you know what RPM it makes the most torque and what RPM it makes the most horsepower can you use the transmission to put it there. his breaking and shifting skills are atrocious, laughable!

This right here. Storing a car in a museum forever will help it be remembered but driving it shows people WHY it's remembered.

Another great video from Hot Rod. My first car was a '71 'cuda 340/4bbl paid for with paper route and grass mowing money. Truly when asked the question, "which car do you regret not keeping?" that was it.

I got to ride in this car with Jess one time when my brothers 70 Challenger broke, I had to plant both feet firmly in the floorboard in front of your seat, grab both straps of the seat harness and hang on as Jess put the car through the turns as hard as the car would allow, I'll never forget it. Jess is a great guy and so gracious to have let me have that experience., Thanks Jess!, and congrats on this win,....how cool is that!... couldn't have happened to anyone more deserving.

Way to go Jess, great job. You finally did it.. I used to work with this guy. He is a stand up guy, for sure. His whole team is. I have known Jess a long time. Even his wife Lisa is part of the team. I was watching last year when he took second. The Pikes Peak Hill Climb is a race like no other. This is the oldest race in America besides the Indy 500. The Unsers used to do this race every, among others. This is truly a testament to driving skills.

Good for you man! Congrats on that win! Was glad to hear your "They were meant to be driven" comment. I've been a Mopar fan my whole life. There's that whole militant faction of guys who restore these cars with the intentionally sagging paint "Because that's how they came off the line in Hamtramck"! like that Worman twit. Glad you weren't afraid to take a torch to that machine!

What everyone who criticizes today's hill climb participants doesn't understand is the racers didn't choose to pave the road. The Sierra club sued the city of C.S. and won to have it paved. True racers will adapt and race on any road in any vehicle.

I mean, look at those cars, they have racing and life written all over it, they MEAN something, they speak for themselves and for those who race them. It amazing that these machines can still be that top notch and sustain a race like Peaks Peak. Built with the heart and not with numbers.

This episode was one of the coolest I have seen. I have been binge watching MotorTrend on RU-vid for the past couple days. I am a huge RoadKill fan. But this episode really captured the spirit of the muscle car and showcased a very cool race and a lot of heritage. I love the work MotorTrend does. Keep on keepin' on boys and girls. I don't believe I've ever commented here, but I originally built that car for the track and sold it to Jess. Looks like he's done some great work with it since. It was originally a 383 car, but I got it with a 340. I started by doing a ground up restoration, but eventually turned it into a road race car. I won a couple of class championships on road courses in the NorthEast before my new wife decided that I needed something slower :) I'd be a rich man if I'd kept every car I've ever owned. BTW, "MOPAH" was my plate.

The car is a true BS23N code '71, 'Cuda. According to the records, it started life as one of 71 built with a 383 and a 3 speed manual tranny. The scheduled build date was 4-26-71. It now has a built small block and an aluminum case 4 speed and a 4.30 gear in back.

The sound was most likely from the Zoom that was in the car, which is a light-weight professional recording instrument. It is difficult to get something as loud as this 'Cuda to sound good through anything at close range. Elana is an encyclopedia of information on these old muscle cars, did a fantastic job capturing the feeling of the race week, and did a great job narrating the experience. These are kind, professional, talented people you are criticizing.

Oh and for those that don't understand, he's not heel toeing around the corners because it's a bit more important to reach the top and finish the race than tumble down the side of the mountain and test out the roll cage. It might not be the most exciting way around a corner but when you have someone else's life in your hands and feet literally it's best not to push your luck. If you care about life that is! Plus he still has the best time on the Peak anyway, beat it if you can.
