1971 Renwal 1/32 Ontos “A Thing with a Sting” Multiple 106mm Recoilless Rifles, Kit 557:149
Let me start by saying that this model is not perfect and was never quite completed. You’ll probably notice the decals aren’t applied and some of the details aren’t painted and it’s missing a piece on the back of the one barrel. (Although that is probably somewhere in the basement.)
Let me also say that I can attest that this model has an attitude problem. It definitely didn’t want to be filmed and I wouldn’t be surprised if it gave Dad as much trouble as it gave me. :-)
Dad’s main memory of the Ontos is that he just didn’t like it. He can’t remember exactly why - it could have been it wasn’t fitting together well or it didn’t look the way he wanted it to or maybe because the only decals were for the Army. (The Ontos was mainly used by the Marines.) Whatever the reason, I still wanted to show it, warts and all, because it’s an interesting, unique model. Dad said if you wanted to build an Ontos, this was what was available at the time, although it appears there are Academy and Revell models available of the Ontos now.
Have you ever built the Ontos? Do you have any incomplete or disastrous projects? Please share in the comments below.

Though this and other classic Renwal kits show their age and were intended to "double" as toys, their working features like opening hatches, rudimentary interiors, and even engines could be made into decent dioramas with a bit of work and applying the techniques pioneered by Shep Paine. If brought back, they'd make great, low-cost kits for younger modelers to train on, and a nice trip down memory lane for those of us "of a certain age." I also suspect they'd be a good basis for players of Warhammer 40K as Ork vehicles. "Waaagh!" anyone . . . ? Thanks for sharing this with us! 7th like.

Wonderful suggestions! Before this channel, I didn't realize how creative people were in their builds. And an Ork vehicle would be a VERY unique project ;-) Thanks so much for watching and for your ideas!

It certainly is an odd piece of artillery. Still a nice build that has survived. Missing parts, broken parts, imperfections are all classified as "battler damage" or armour build. Just put it in a diorama and all is well.

There was a time when Renwal kits were expensive, but I don't think they are any more. The Ontos is definitely a different model. Thanks for watching!

I built one of these in the late 60's when I was in high school, along with the Duster Twin 40. They were reissued by Revell not many years ago with the original box art, along with a few other Renwal armor kits. Renwal kits had a lot of itty-bitty parts to make the functioning hatches and doors. They advertised that their kits were designed to minimize visible glue seams.
