1972 #125 FLH 98ci shovelhead stroker motor rebuild Harley by tatro machine
see how to rebuild a Harley hotrod shovelhead stroker motor with very few new parts.
the motor ran out of oil from a big oil leak and locked up. need to fixed the motor for the summer and then fix it right over the winter.
I bet it runs good for a few years because of the way I fix things.

I watch this every time I pull a Shovelhead apart. You actually show every aspect of how it's done correct. You are a great teacher as well as mechanic. More of a professor of all the good stuff. You can tell your dad was a master as well. Thank you for all your videos. You will leave a great tread mark on this earth sharing your knowledge. Thanks KT! If you get a chance throw a vid of the rear juice drum. There's nothing anywhere. I know it's super simple but there's nothing on the interweb.

Very true. I have been following and watching him for years. I have learned so much. I love old Harley’s and unfortunately my dad passed away when I was 13 so I haven’t had anyone to show me the things I’m interested in. Tatro vids assisted me into completely rebuilding his 77 shovelhead. Rebuilding the transmission was the hardest but tatro has a really good video on how to line those dogs up. Buying the specific specialty tools is tremendously cheaper than having someone do them. I even bought a lathe about 15 years ago and it’s been a godsend on building and repairing old bikes. I’m getting ready to swap out the primary is why I’m back on this video. 99% sure I remember it all but it’s extremely nice to have this free available content to freshen my memory

This video has been a great help! Currently reassembling the primary/starter/clutch in my ‘72 FX. My only question is that when the starter jack shaft is installed what keeps the shaft in place once the starter solenoid engages it? Mine seems to come out of place unless I hold it. Pulley and forks move and engage just fine. Thanks Tatro!

Thanks for making these video. I wish I would have found this a month ago when I was replacing my clutch hub. I didn't locktite the key or shaft. I've also seen you use red loctite on the threads in another video but not this one. I didn't use it but used the lock tab. Should I pull it back apart?

Did you put grease on the hub between the hub bearings and the hub itself because they looked completely dry? ...(I am concerned because I think I over greased mine last time I put it together and I'm getting ready to put the clutch together again).
@TatroMachine
@TatroMachine 3 года назад
with a chain drive you don't need much because the oil will do its job just after you start the motor. on a belt drive you need to grease it up real good. tatro

i always put my plates in first, then adjust chain... i usually go one notch looser, because when it heats up, it will tighten...and may offset the basket when you release the clutches...other than the Friday night Prom date,...looser is better..

I just replaced a 3 finger spool with a 5, when steel fingers get worn badly the surging can't be ajusted out. You mention it when installing friction plates "no binding" simple but alluded me for years. I have 73 flh bought in 88. You never did show the final clutch cable ajustment, my through rod over to the kicker seems to be portruding to much and was hoping to avoid pulling kick cover off, it won't pull out so clip and sm bearing must be still attached. I learn from all your vids and appreciate the info, bet your retired Air Force ?

I just wanna make sure and know your opinion, i got FLH 1972 the owner manual says pressure plate 31/32in (1966-1967) or 1 1/32in (1968-on) you used 31/32in in your video what do you think? One more thing i messed up whit push rod clutch and adjusting screw push rod they wore off what did i do wrong thank a lot

What size nut and pitch is the motor shaft ? I wanted to run a dye over the threads to clean them up. Running belt drive and can’t find in parts book anything that tells me what size it is.
@TatroMachine
@TatroMachine 4 года назад
come on, can't you do anything simple. take a tape measure and measure the diameter of the shaft. thin for the hard one. put the tape measure over the threads and count how many threads per inch you have. tatro

I couldn't believe that ruler. That 1/32" looked like a mile. What do I know? I'm just a carpenter.
@TatroMachine
@TatroMachine 7 лет назад
that would be .010 or ten thousandths of an inch verses you 1/32" which is just over .032 thousandths. a house is alot bigger then a bike so the numbers are different. tatro

I had a mere 23,000 miles on my 80" Evo and when I installed the Ultima 113" it totally ate up my existing primary chain rendering it junk (after 300 miles), I guess that's normal. I have upgraded everything else to include compensator eliminator from Evolution Industries and their clutch basket. I also got rid of the Junk Kevlar belt and swapped it out with a woven carbon fiber belt. I guess a good fully synthetic oil would be best for the primary case? luckily I found a NOS Diamond primary chain for a replacement. Does anyone make a "Heavy duty Primary chain"?
@TatroMachine
@TatroMachine Год назад
i have not seen problems with primary chains with big motors. i only use the diamond square link plate chains or the oem harley ones. make sure that you have atleast 3/8" to 1/2" chain slack. also make sure that your sprockets are aligned. any offset in your sprockets will kill the primary chain. i use the 85w maxima primary oil but atf will work to. tribodyn 75w90ls oil will work to but you have to be carful with synthetic oils. they do not always play friendly with the clutch plates. tatro

Hello Tatro, i have a question about startermotor axle sprocket on my shovelhead 1978 fxe , with primary chain outer and inner cover , how much shall sprocket teeth overlap clutch sprocket teeth in start moment , my startsprocket seems not overlap cluth sprocket with perhaps 1/2 teeth Regards /Janne
