We finally try to take our AMC Javelin project racing, for the first time ever, at the Kenosha, Wisconsin AMC Party. Did it finally get finished? Did the motor, that hasn't ran in almost 30 years, actually start? Did the car, that was started almost 40 years ago and never completed, finally get done? Can it really be finished in a two week thrash? Follow along as we add another chapter to the story of Rob Wess, John Dover and Tony Mancusi...helping them see their dream become a reality.

Been a while that I haven't run my '68 401-powered 4-speed REAL STREET (300,000+ miles!) Javelin at the local (Napierville, Quebec) track. What I wouldn't give to be a part of not only drag racing out there, but to do it with a whole bunch of other AMCs!!! So very cool, guys. Keep it up.

My uncle bought a 74 Javlin brand new and as a kid I loved it but that one you guys is bad ass and like you said people wait there whole life including myself to go that quick and you did it out of the gate....i love AMC because they are part of the Mopar or no car family 👍👍👍👍👍✅✅✅✅✅

I spent every weekend at Great Lakes for many many years, that's where I cut my teeth. And I'm a big AMC guy... Was waiting to see you get that thing out. You did good, but since you've never dealt with it before, you don't have to stay on the trans brake long with an NA setup, you'll be at launch rpm in under a second. The longer you're on it, the hotter your trans temp will get. Turbo guys stay on it longer, but they have to build boost, and any will tell you how hard it is on the transmission, if you're on it too long your fluid will cook. Once you get the timing on the trans brake good so you're not on it any longer than you need to be, and fix the four link, I'd bump the launch up in the 3,200-3,500 range to get started on finding where the car likes it, that combo should take it like nothing. That is one sweet car...

I have 3 other projects and it got to the point I realized I was not going to finish this car. Wanted to focus on cars I could drive on the street and race occasionally. This car was not a day or two from going down the strip. Jacob and Tim worked some crazy hours on it for two weeks straight. They had time and resources I didn’t. So I respectfully disagree with the idea it was a stupid decision. Regret not being able to finish it but it was a well thought out, difficult decision. In my opinion it turned out well for everyone. I’m getting some other things going, the car actually runs, and other people are able to follow the build of a pretty unique vehicle

Some people need to watch a whole video where the owner and driver shows the problems and addresses how he plans to resolve the problems. How another driver would be able to compensate for the suspension abruptly stopping I don't know how that would be possible. I believe that a driver that understands and advances as the car gets sorted and advances is the most logical long-term program....My 2 cents 😊

You’re proving to racers it’s more fun with a 4 oh won! Glad you’re sharing the experience with the former owners and us!
@stuntgirl56-therachelvande24
The funny thing is we drove these 'race cars' in the 70's every day that kids now days say are not practical. The technology was sticks and rocks but the hay day of the 60's and 70's were our everyday grocery and go to drive-in cars. Fuel was high octane, FM radios were the new thing and Purple Hornies, Hooker Headers and Cragars were the bomb. The secret was always power to weight ratio. Some got it some did not. AMC was the secret weapon that a few of us explored. The fun of making the drivers of Big 3 take the long way home because they just got beat by a Rambler was more fun than the money, every time.

A little friendly advice if you don’t mind. 😁 something to think about: from the video I‘be seen of your car (BAD ASS by the way) it hasn’t left hard enough to dent that frame rail. The rear suspension has barely moved at all. You’re going to need to raise the launch rpm to at least 3500. Also you may need to turn the motor to 6000 for a decent burn out. Find out the engines red line. If its 7500rpm shift at 7200 or even 7000. Set that shift light on your tach and you will see it in your peripheral vision. I’d guess that Bad Boy will run 9.90’s at which point they will ask you for your Compatition drivers license lol. I’ve been racing since I was 20 and I’m 60 now. I have a big tire 88 mustang that sits like your car. I love big tire cars. Good luck my friend.🏁🇺🇸

The 1971 Javelin taillights are nice but the '72 grate brightens it up. the grill looks like 73-74? My '72 did not have the lights. However, as years take toll on original cars, it is easy for things to get altered, as long as it still dusts the competition, I am all for it. After owning 5 1969 SC/Rambers built with the help of Hurst Engineering, I appreciate AMC stuff and had years of fun dragging Broadway in downtown Portland Oregon, winning my $5 with a stock SC/Rambler, everyone always thought that I built it but it was a Super Car and hardly gets the due it is due. It was like driving a 'drug'. Imagine a 427/454 Nova but quicker..
@stuntgirl56-therachelvande24
The AMC disc brake system was awesome with multiple piston calipers. These brakes were ideal for the time and would bring these road rockets to a speedy safe stop. Racing on a newly finished freeway near Oregon City in the early 1970's, I remember racing a V12 Jaguar. The speedometer on the 1970 Javelin pointed to 140mph at approximately 4 o'clock. I remember pushing in the clutch when the speedo needle was pointing straight down and coasting uphill for about a mile across the 'new 205' bridge and ducking off the West Linn exit at around120mph. Amazing car, Amazing Guardian Angels.
@stuntgirl56-therachelvande24
Running an M40 or TH400/475 nice but TF8 would be a choice I would make. Less hydraulics and more mechanical. Valve body issues and intermediate clutch is where you would look, valve body spacer plate/gaskets. A lot to go wrong with the goofy shifter, I would just use a stock shifter out of an old Vega/Mustang/etc. I would want the pattern in the proper order. Too much electronics can bog you down with what to do. Just drive the car. Punch it and go.
@stuntgirl56-therachelvande24
The AMC V8 was very similar to the Buick 401. The stroke a bit longer and the pistons large so, nearly small block rev speed with big block horsepower. The secret to AMC, + lightweight cheap crappy metal components, they were very light.

That was AWESOME! I miss the racing, did some street bike and FunnyBike racing back in the late 90. You need to secure that hood with more Dzus, its loosing power as the wind blows over the carb, you need that scoop. If I had a car like that with so close to completion, it wouldn’t sit for 30 years. But my project has a lot of rust, so it has sat from 1999, but took it out from storage this summer, its time to make something out of it. Videos like this are a good inspiration! So thanks.

Need to launch the car on the trans brake at a much higher rpm, around 4,500 rpm... I don't know what your converter stall is? It's not planting the rear tires good. Rear springs may be too stiff. If you can run 130 mph., it should run in the low 10's. Too many variables to get the car right...

Looked like you shifted it too soon on one of the gears, but they might of been something wrong with the shifter or trans.? I assume the 60 ft. is slow? If you want to pickup the 60ft. times, put longer collectors on it... That makes more low end torque... What is the rear gear bud?

I agree that she’s a 9 second car...once you get all the fine tuning done on her...and the driver...😏😂😎 It will definitely happen. As loud as she is, making her a drag and drive car is ambitious. Remember, you are going to add a little weight making her street legal and adding the passenger seat. Most people don’t drive a 9 second drag car on the street though... but it will be cool as hell to see...👍🏻😎 I’m looking forward to seeing it all happen. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride. Easy nine second car once you get the chassis working and you get used to whats in a fast car. Just take things at a gradual pace, and you will get in the nines without breaking a bunch of stuff. The quickest I have been is 10.0 on a bike, and that didn't happen in a pass or two. It just takes time, and experience, plus you have a great rig with a well done drive train. Good luck, keep up the hard work, and great content.

Mahalo, Jacob, Tim et al for taking Tony's dream to its logical, successful, and above all...happy...conclusion. So happy to see it all reach this point. Looking forward to seeing more, if you've a mind to document it. Aloha and take care. Oh...and get some rest, too, won't you?

Awesome video and car but if I can put my two cents worth of keyboard warrior I think you should be launching between 3500 and 4000.

Yes sir! The plan was to work up to that and see how the car handled things, but the suspension issues kept us from getting to that point.

What a way to buy a long dusty dream, & breathe some life back into it... Hard to believe a NA is pulling 10's from that era, we used a blower on a built 401 to do 9.2 in 1980... So CONGRATS, beautiful ride, looking forward to its continuing legacy! Thanx !

Just Because the car sat, after build , why would you think there would be a Problem, If it was built right it should be fine, The only Problem you Might have down the Road is the umbrella seals being dried up, But then I started motors that have started in 25 years never have any leaks,

You are launching below the stall, that's just wasting time at the line. It should have a 4000rpm stall, so you have to launch at least 3500 rpm, but expected at least 3800 unless you spin.
