Now days they try to sell us vehicles we don't want, loaded with crap we don't want but have to buy. I ordered and bought a New Ford Ranger 4x4 in 1984. At that time you could order the truck with every option separately. Just exactly what you wanted and nothing you did not want. Out the door for $10,000. You could order vehicles in this way in the 1960's. Back in the "pencil and paper days". But now, in the computer age......and instant communication....we can't, its to difficult, according to the auto makers.

Thank the EPA. Unelected bureaucrats deciding what kind of vehicle is best suited for You.
@zzoinks
@zzoinks 23 дня назад
@@paulradice3534they're "elected" by the presidents we vote in. Not directly though, but you can say the same about electing the president as that depends on the electoral college votes in the end. Now I'm curious what actions would be considered reasonable by an agency tasked with a general purpose like environmental protection. Congress has granted them the power to make the decisions. I forget the exact terms for an agency's mission vs decisions in support of it (maybe some term like legislative policy). But the EPA has a mission to protect our environment and thus our health, so I think it's unfair to say they're malevolent unelected bureaucrats when they're making the decisions to advance that mission. There can be a better way, maybe you want more oversight over their decisions or some scientific requirement. (It seems a change of administration can drastically change the behavior of an agency, even though it's the same agency with the same mission, so clearly the agency has soms political influence on it despite being scientific in design) As an example the Supreme Court ruled that the national traffic safety agency has a duty to protect drivers, so when Reagan administration instructed the agency to remove seat belt requirements, the Supreme Court prevented that as it was an abdication of the agency's duty and mission to protect drivers.

I had a '72 C-10, the last year for that classic Chevy style. Bought it for $800 in '85, sold it in '98 for $1,500. Lord knows what it's worth now. I kick myself for sure as it was one of the biggest mistakes I ever made selling it. I think I sold it because it only got about 8-10 mpg loaded or empty, LOL. It was a gold colored solid steel beauty, 2WD, bias ply tires, 350 V8, with a 4 speed standard. First gear was a real low granny. I did upgrade to new wheels and radials and it really improved the ride. If I still had this truck I'm thinking it would sell for $8,000 or better. If I win the lottery I'm gonna buy another!

"Aluminized exhaust that resists corrosion"... glad there was ONE part of the Chevy's of that era that wouldn't rust LOL:) Dad had a '72 Chevy pickup... it was a pretty good pickup, plenty of power, just a 350 with a three on the three standard transmission IIRC, but boy did that thing rust... the fenders rusted, the cab rusted, it looked like Swiss cheese by the time he traded it off. Another problem was they used stupid coil springs and long bars for rear suspension-- thing would squat on its spurs and bottom out REAL easy when you put a decent size load in the bed compared to a Ford... Dad finally had enough and traded it off on a new '77 Ford because the floorboard was completely rusted out under the doors and beside the seats-- you could see clean through to the ground! The back corners of the cab had rotted off behind the doors, the top of the cab roof where it joins the pillars was rusting through, and the front and rear fenders looked like Swiss cheese... Chevy might have had "double panels" back then but they were using recycled steel from old tin cans and so the trucks simply rotted away in no time, and we were down south in Texas where they DON'T salt the roads in winter-- hate to think how they'd rot up north after being exposed to winter road salt! That said, Chevy was ahead of the curve on the front disc brakes-- HUGE improvement over the drum brakes that hung around too long on Fords... Disk brakes give much better heat dissipation and stopping power, resistance to brake fade and of course are MUCH more resistant to water intrusion since they just sling the water off the rotors, where drums trap the water... even so, anybody who's ever driven a HD truck (2 ton or up, which are pretty much ALL drum brakes even to this day) knows if you drive through water, you drive fairly slow and "drag the brakes" by applying light pressure to the pedal for a bit after you get out of the water to generate heat in the brakes to dry out the drums and get rid of the water... otherwise you step on the brakes and the trapped water on the inside surface of the drum simply "hydroplanes" the brake shoes and your stopping distance goes up a ton... Later! OL J R :)
@seththomas9105
@seththomas9105 4 года назад
I'm a GM guy but your right about the rust part, these bodies rusted terrible up here in Iowa, but so did the Fords and Dodges TBH. the 73-77ish seemed to be better on cab rust but the boxes on those were notorious for turning to Swiss cheese in ten years.
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 4 года назад
@@seththomas9105 yeah agree... We had a 77 Suburban we bought used in the late 80's for a farm truck... That 454 automatic would pull like a team of wild bulls, and pass everything but a gas station... Why we eventually had to sideline it-- simply drank too much gas, which got real expensive in the run up to the first Gulf War.... I was gonna get it running again after being parked again and it was rusting away to badly, the body was turning to Swiss cheese, the rear C pillars were nearly completely gone... Shame really because it was a great truck otherwise... My brother put the 454 into his 79 El Camino, which he later sold... Later! OL J R

This is why all the older folks know so much about cars, cause they marketed them and informed the general public of what goes behind the truck. They demonstrated why their truck was better and gave all the engineering behind it. The people could truly decide for themselves which actually was better. And today’s commercials just show a family in a car and show that it backs in for you and their like, “this is why my family drives a Ford, this is safety.” And then the commercial ends. It’s boring and non informative. No wonder you see those people who’s cars are falling apart on the road today. Nobody, besides car people, care about or know much about their car nowadays. Also, can I please go buy myself a 1972 Chevy cause this sells me. Oh how I wish I could get one new now.

Nowadays, and I kid you not, the US FTC would sue, harass, or block any manufacturer from doing comparisons with competitors, one reason you don't see comparative advertising anymore. Even court cases have held it's not easy to do comparative advertising in the USA. All in the name of TruthSpeak.

I find it interesting that sales literature often refers to the Blazer as a "personal car-truck" or Four wheel drive "car" - in a sense it was like a passenger car with the the backseat. Strictly speaking what is a 'truck' that has no separate cab from the distinct pickup box/body?

A Chevy suburban is simply a station wagon on a truck chassis. I'm comparing a 62 Impala wagon I've got with a 75 suburban that I have two wheel drive. I guess soccer moms needed more room than Little League moms did. I'm not knocking suburban. I've had multiple suburbans over the years decades newer than that 75 I mentioned.

If you get an F150, make sure that it is a model that is newer than around 2011 or so. The previous years had a horrible engine in it that made them a bad choice. Also, do not get the “EcoBoost” engine that comes with any of the Ford vehicles, they are unreliable pieces of junk. If you want something older than the Ford, then get a Silverado from around 2006 to earlier years. GM(the company that owns Chevy and GMC) had a terrible quality drop due to their bankruptcy in 2009. All GM quality has been terrible since then, which is why I recommend Ford for the later years, and Chevy for the earlier years.

in my experience from working in junkyards and seeing many old vehicles ford makes a better quality vehicle than g.m. the paint and body build quality is usually higher . and the twin i beam is a better suspension system for a truck than the unequal length control arm set up that g.m. uses . it may not corner quite as well because it lacks a anti roll / stabilizer bar , but the advantages outweigh that . it is simpler and gives more wheel travel than any other type . that is why it is used on 2WD race prerunners . and another bad thing about the g.m. pickups is that when it is has a V8 the engine is placed so low in the frame . again the advantage of having a slighty lower center of gravity because of that is outweighed because it is a lot harder to service the engine . and the ford 9" rear axle that is used on the half ton models is better than a g.m. 10 or 12 bolt model that is used on the C 10 . the g.m. rear ends retain the axle with only a circlip that sometimes breaks and when that happens you lose the whole axle and wheel with it . and the the ford 9" is what is called a " removable differential type axle " you can remove the differential without taking out the axles like you have to do on the g.m. spicer type axle

I've owned both of these trucks,except mine was a GMC. And I can tell you if you wanted to own a GMC or Chevrolet back then,you'd also need to be at least a part owner in a full truck repair shop. My GMC was broke down more than it was running. My Ford F100 on the other hand was one of the most durable long lasting trucks I've ever owned. It was the Timex of pickup trucks,it took a licking and kept on kicking. I owned one more GMC after that one and that was all I needed to know about GM trucks. Have owned Fords ever since. No more GM junk for me.

The casing wires they put on brake lines make them rust and fail faster. I never liked them. The suspension isn't what absorbs everything you encounter in a truck - another grand Chevy failing. This video is comparing 1972 Chevys to earlier models of other brands. Roofs like in a chevy rust out. That is why absorbant material is used instead of metal inside. I also like how they obviously poke holes in different heights in the truck beds. Lame comparisons to earlier models.

As a work vehicle the GM trucks were no match whatsoever to the Fords of the day. The Chevy was more of a beefed up car whereas the Ford was a dedicated truck through and through. I don't need Google or You Tube to tell me this,I was working and driving these very same models of trucks back then working on the farm and with my dad's waterwell drilling company. The GM's did ride and drive a little better,but the Fords were the tough as nails work trucks in those days and today as well. There's a reason that the F150 is the sales leader.

I have considered that both Chev & Ford built good pickups during the early 70's. If you wanted a 6 the Ford 300 was the best bet but both manufacturers offered a good selection of V8's. Chev's 350 & 400 autos were very good & Ford's best auto was the C6. Both offered pretty fair 4 speeds & Ford had a slightly better selection of differentials. .
