You hardly ever see a 340 in a 71-73 Roadrunner. Most 71's got the 383 and most 72-73's got the 400 I believe. Ive always really liked the 71-72 Roadrunner body style...even though performance dropped considerably in 72 because of emissions regulations. The 383 was de-tuned quite a bit for 71 but the 340, 440, and 426 Hemi all retained basically the same power ratings they had in 1970 besides a 5 horsepower drop for the 440 4bbl and 440 6bbl. But the 340 4bbl and the Hemi kept their exact ratings from the previous year. But in 72 the 383 was replaced by the low compression 400 and the 440/6 and 426 Hemi were discontinued. The 340 4bbl and 440 4bbl still remained by they were both de-tuned quite a bit for 1972. If you wanted a fast Mopar brand new in 1972-73 your best bet was a 340-4 speed Duster/Demon
I had one with the GTX package and 440, dealer installed an air grabber for me. It was B-5 blue. Quality led a bit to be desired, but it would be worth a lot today
Nice. High school chum bought a nearly new '72 RR during the summer of '73. His was green w the 400, ps, pb, ac, am/fm and a bench seat. He pampered that car too. Lost contact with him so I don't know what happened to it.
Here's a crazy story. Today I saw some Maclaren at a doctors office and I laughed because they look like shit and cost way to fuckin much. It always amazes me how much money some people will pay to show off to a bunch of strangers who don't give a shit anyways lol. I sat there thinking how one day when I have a Roadrunner just like this in this color, I was actually thinking of this exact car because I have seen this before and downloaded several pictures of this car. I left that office and not 4 minutes later, I shit you not, in the driveway of a house on the corner of a block 2 blocks from that office sat a 1971 grabber blue Roadrunner! It had the decals by the back window but not on the hood and it had a black spoiler. I couldn't believe it. It's a sign y'all, one day......and I think it's going to be sooner than later. Greg, I'm not shittin you, one day I'll be out there picking out my first ride.
I'm glad Dodge put out the Challenger in 1970. The new designs for the Roadrunner and Chargers never got me. Great cars of course, but the early ones are just in a high level of beauty.
