This video represents the classic Caterpillar D8H crawler tractor, it has the 270 hp D342 6 cylinder turbo engine, for the technical it has a 5.75 ins bore and a 8 in stroke, it runs at 1280 rpm.
This engine was developed for the D8 tractors and was the only portable Caterpillar machinery the D342 powered, over 33000 46A tractors were built and manufactured , also produced in Scotland as the 68A , The first Caterpillar tractor to have a torque converter, with a three speed powershift as an option and then used in the all new 1959 D9.
All round the D8H bulldozers are good solid machines.

Update____ in the comments people have asked why? we dug a big hole and filled in in for no reason, I was selling it for a customer, we filmed it on a Sunday afternoon, there was a piece of grass that had no crops on it and he gave her a good work out.

This takes me back to when I was 5 years old, sitting on the hydraulic tank until it got hot, then moving to the battery boxes. The soil looks the same too, Dallas County Alabama. Love the sound.

@@lewiemcneely9143.... Hey, my friend!.... my apology for not answering sooner, I wasn't even aware that you had replied again, just now found it as I was watching this video one more time. : ) 89 S-10's are neat trucks... I drive an 02 GMC 2500HD / Duramax with a 125hp chip (just in case I ever "need" it.. lol), but otherwise it's "stock" except for an aftermarket and 4" exhaust system.... and has the ZF 6spd manual (rare) in it, with a HD Southbend single mass flywheel (stock was a dual mass fiasco), clutch & pressure plate. I don't (never have) "abuse" it in any way, shape or form... now has about 312,000 miles on it, and other than the newer / upgraded injectors (originals were recalled in 02), and my own upgrading of the aforementioned parts, the only thing that I have had to replace was the water pump and fuel pressure regulator... other than that, it's completely original... and not a leak or weep on it anywhere, from the radiator to the rear end. Oh... I did upgrade the suspension on it about two years ago... put hd KYB shocks on all four corners (over $108. per shock - my cost, just for the shocks) when I had a custom set of new leaf springs made for the rear, by a friend of mine out in southern CA. who makes all the suspension systems for almost all of the CA. rural fire departments as well as for many other applications, including various racing forms. The originals were a 4+ 1 set-up and I changed it to a 5+ 1 with a custom "spring rate".... handles and rides like a dream. So, your a fan of the UK Deltics, huh?.... personally, I always considered the design was wayyyy over complicated and hard starting, but of course... that's just my own opinion from a design standpoint (formally studied Diesel Engine Design & Theory, for 4 & 2 cycle - but specializing in 2 cycle, for 4 years back in the mid 1960s - 63/67). I guess I'm just not a fan of the Triangulated ("Delta") design. FairBanks Morse used the opposed Piston design as well in their 2 cycles, but they were of an In-line vertical design and horrendously more reliable than the Napier Deltics. As far as railroad prime movers, the EMD's had & have the simplest and best design of any of them, as well as most reliable, world wide.... with the possible exception of the very earliest 567's with the "U" & "V"decks... which proved somewhat troublesome, especially the "U" decked engines that had issues with the top deck cracking but it didn't take too long to get it sorted out and EMD had a prime mover "change out" program by 1943 / 1944. Steam... though much more "labor intensive" to maintain... is considerably more powerful than diesels are.... with the probable exception of the largest Wartsia Sulzer Marine diesels, like the RT96c series (2 cycle, like All the large marine engines producing over 50,000 hp.).... but then again, they've never produced a steam power plant capable of producing equivalent power, before the technology changed over to diesel. I guess what I like about steam engines in Any form, but especially with steam locomotives, is that you see & hear a "living, breathing" machine, with all of its mechanical operations in full view... and each with their own character and operational personalities.... some you like, and some.. you don't - from a fireman and engineers point of view. As far as the diesel locomotive is concerned, I'm a fan of the 1st & 2nd generations, from the earliest "covered wagons" (EMD E, FT, F3, F7, etc) and then the "Geeps", & SD's - (especially the SD 40-2's). As far as EMD "will always be GM/Detroits BIG brothers"..... they Only thing that the two had in common was the fact that they were both Uniflow 2 cycle in design, and the Detroit Series 149 engines also utilized a "pot" head for easy/fast component change-outs on the top-end. Other than that, they had nothing in common whatsoever from a design standpoint, or in any other way.... other than GM was once the controlling corporate head, over both wholly separate companies. Was great to hear from you again, Lewie.... sure hope all is going well for you and that you & yours are staying healthy.

I operated one with a donkey start in Canada (Valcartier outside Quebec city) for 10 weeks clearing a path 6 lanes wide through a muskeg swamp the grousers had 2" extra welded onto them for the job and at the end, they were gone worn to stubbs and my kidneys haven't been the same since. But it was an awesome machine.

David, Thanks for your reply, we were not doing anything with the D8 other than making a video of the machine under load to help me sell it, the owner had a bit of ground that was not coverd in his crops, so that's where we tried out the tractor, it had not run for some time and the blade was rusty along with the tracks and this shined them up for the photos I took afterwards, the video was took on the Sunday morning and I had it sold to a guy in Texas by the Wednesday, he bought it on the strength of the video I took that day , so there were 37,000 reasons we dug that hole out and filled it in. Plus you get to hear that great Cat engine sound

@hamptonequipment5853
@hamptonequipment5853 2 года назад
Unfortunately not, this was one of those machines that don't come around in that shape very often, the money that had been spent on that would make your eyes water, just one was for $67,000 from a Cat dealer who completely rebuilt the transmission and finals with all new gears and that was ten years ago, its like most old tractors and crawlers you will have more money in it than its worth in a blink, but we still do it😉👍
