The American role in the coup is not disputed at all. It is a well known fact that Nixon and Kissinger did everything in their power to ruin Chile's economy and foment social unrest that would lead to a coup. It is a standard American strategy that has been used on multiple occasions in various countries. It's even being used right now in Iran and Venezuela.
@@breeie9900 Its only disputed if you are set on defending neoliberal ideology. Nixon saying "make the economy scream" doesn't leave much to dispute (source: National Security Archive Electronic Briefing Book No. 8). Nixon publicly saying the US will do everything in its power to prevent Allende from getting loans (there's literal video footage). Or the fact that chile's credit rating was changed by the IMF without giving any justification for doing so. None of this is disputed, unless you choose to dig your head in the sand.
Actually, there is a ton of resources stating that there was communication between the military in Brazil and organizations like the CIA at the start of the 1964 coup.

Sure. The Iranians held their first democratic election. Their newly elected leader considered nationalizing their oil industry and cutting the British (who had been profiteering off of Iran's resources) out. English oil interests sent representatives to Eisenhower to convince him to help overthrow the democratically elected leader. Their pitch was something like "Iran's leader is not a Communist, but he's old and tensions are high. If he were to fall, communists could seize power." Eisenhower bit and the CIA (with help from England) fomented resistance and overthrew Iran's leader. They installed the Shah who was "sympathetic" to imperial business interests. Years later, the Shah was overthrown in the Islamic revolution and replaced by a Muslim cleric. The US (through the CIA and the military) have been scrambling ever since to restore imperial order on the area. In this effort, they backed Saddam Hussein in his rise to power in Iraq and then funded both militaries as Iraq and Iran went to war. Seeing the rise of Islam near their borders as a threat, the USSR set out to dominate Afghanistan an instill their version of imperial order. In response, the US armed and funded resistance fighters known as the mujahideen who defeated the USSR. The mujahideen consisted of many interesting characters including members who would later become the Taliban and Al Qaeda (one of whom was Osama Bin Laden). The US helped install an interim government in Afghanistan but civil war broke out eventually ending with the Taliban victorious. Most of the rest should be fairly familiar. Much was left out.
Just a little correction: Allende's predecessor was named Eduardo Frei Montalva. He should be named as Frei not Montalva according to chilean naming conventions.

Hi, love your videos. Could you do a video on the Hungarian Soviet republic during the 1920s? It’s a very interesting topic that is very rarely talked about!
The American funding of the Operation Condor through CIA is a well known fact. Kissinger was the one aiding the Chilean military overthrow President Allende (it's pronounced "Ayende"). Thanks for this video, from a Chilean-British, granddaughter of Chilean exiles.
To bad the KGBs operations are less well known as they operated in a system of zero accountability to the people and they had time to destroy most of their records as the USSR collapsed. Most of what wasn't destroyed has been sealed away by newer Russian governments that again, have almost no accountability to the people. It was a hidden war where only one side has been somewhat honest about their actions while the other side managed to dodge most criticism simply by hiding what they did. Filing a freedom of information request in the USSR regarding old KGB operations meant that you received information about your future lack of freedom. Modern Russia aint much better. In the U.S you actually get the damn files instead of a life time in a work camp. And yes I know, you only got like 6-8 years in the work camps but they put in a ton of effort in to ensuring that those years would cover the rest of your life.

Chile's economy suffered massively under Pinochet, the improvements that did come came from the nation's copper which remained nationalized under his supposedly free market government, and from American investment. Not to mention the fact that Chile has ALWAYS been one of the wealthiest countries in Latin America. The improvements in living standards came after Pinochet and he was an impediment to that progress.

But if you were talking about the COUP itself, the US had ZERO participation on it. You know who wants Allende gone? It's the Congress and Supreme Court, they are already complaining Allende acting unconstitutionally and urges Pinochet's army to take action. Plus he wasn't even democratically-elected in the first place, if we based it on the total votes, 60% of Chileans hate Allende in the 1970 election, the parties of his 2 rivals even formed a coalition against him in 1972. And that it is, Allende single-handedly ruined himself and yes, he destroyed himself without the help of the Americans.

It's mind blowing that the USA supported Pinochet's regime. However, it's even worse to hear them claim they did it to 'protect democracy' (from an elected president?). I don't agree with communism, but we should not forget either that it was capitalism which brought us 17 years of dictatorship.
I think you miss a good part before 73, there was an inflation over 800%, violation of private property, farmers taking the fields of the owners, long rows to took with lucky 1 lt of oil that can last for 7 hours to get it, rationing of food etc. CHILE was the second most poor country in Latin America after Haiti. General Pinochet implement the most modern subway of South America in that time, took the portable supply of water and light to most part of the people.
Beside that, Allende armed the people with soviet armament in diplomatic boxes and there was groups of terrorist called FRENTE PATRIÓTICO MANUEL RODRÍGUEZ AND MOVIMIENTO IZQUIERDA REVOLUCIONARIO.

@K MB A hero does not kill his own people, he did good things, but killing his political enemies because he didn't like the way they think is messed up
@K MB What about the center-left and center-right people that opposed him? I agree that communism is an affront to basic human freedoms, but Pinochet went too far. He should've limited communist activities, but allow for free speech, press, redress of grievances, elections, etc. at the same time. Those things are underlined in the Chilean Constitution anyway.
Fun fact, George Orwell was a socialist. @@noahramsey This. Just look at the trucker strike that was backed up by them. Also rich bastards tried to put the working class against each other (miner strikes against Allende that were fuelled by scared business people)
You exaggerated the role of the CIA in the whole process. And forgot to mention the most important foreign interference: the Cuban one. It's very easy to explain those years. Communists, backed and led from Cuba, tried to take control of the country and install a dictatorship. Social conditions at the time were quite poor, so they had 1/3 of the people on their side. Too little for the revolution they want to start. So the middle and high classes resisted and Allende couldn't manage the forces he unfold: an every day more determined and even violent right wing opposition and the left wing extremists on his own side trying to undermine the government and pressing for more revolutionary changes. This led to chaos. Inflation, social unrest, terrorism, armed bands both from the right and the left, the government breaking the law... At last there wasn't a way out but to call the military.

Although many like to say that Latin America would have been a wealthy democratic utopia if not for the U.S. meddling, an examination of Latin America's history reveals a much more complicated answer, where the sad truth is that if the United States had been isolationist like in the 1930s, then most of Latin America would be under socialist/communist dictatorship and be even more impoverished than today. This is because without the the U.S. the major players would have been Cuba and the Soviet Union, who both sought to expand their socialist revolution or sphere of influence to Latin America. After Fidel Castro and Che Guevara took power in cuba, it was revealed how vulnerable Latin America was to communism, since at that point, just about all of Latin America was economically, culturally, linguistically, and (more or less) politically the same as cuba had been before fell to communism. This meant that countries from Mexico down throughout central America and the entire continent of South America could potentially have been turned to communist bases that would be used to provide sanctuary to communist forces and act as bases for launching communist forces into neighboring countries. After the Cuban missile crisis, the USSR toned it down and decided it wasn't worth risking confrontation with the US in Latin America by trying to create another cuba. However Cuba did no such thing, instead ramping up their support for communist revolutions throughout the world, in both Latin America and even as far as places like Africa, such as Angola and Ethiopia. Since the 1960s In Latin America you had Che Guevara leading socialist guerrilla force in the center of Latin America in Bolivia, attempting to overthrow the government. And after Che was caught, his Cuban fighters escaped and were temporarily given shelter in Chile by Allende. Meanwhile Cuba had been given military aid, intelligence, and sanctuary to communist guerrillas throughout Latin America like FARC in Colombia, or the Sandinistas in Nicaragua. And while some choose not to believe this, the effectiveness of Cuba's resolve can not be denied. The Sandinistas (which had been provided weapons and sanctuary by cuba for years) took power in Nicaragua, providing aid and sanctuary to leftist rebels in El Salvador, and today Ortega is once again in charge while thousands of people are protesting and dozens of protestors have been killed by the government. Meanwhile in 2018 Venezuela, once the wealthiest most democratic country, is now under the socialist authoritarian dictatorship of Maduro with 15,000% inflation, the population is losing 20 pounds a year due to food scarcity, and millions are fleeing the country. And Maduro and Chavez were able to pull this off by letting in the Cuban intelligence apparatus, which helped them consolidate power and turn Venezuela into Cuba's puppet. This cuban strategy that had been successfully pulled off in Nicaragua and Venezuela, would have spread out through Cental and South America, in places like El Salvador, Guatemala, Grenada, Colombia, Peru, and so on had the U.S. not gotten involved. And without U.S. resistance, the USSR would have been involved as well, providing support like they had with Vietnam, where they literally helped found the communist party of Indochina, teaching and training Ho Chi Minh, and funded the Indochinese communist party, where they grew and trained in China until Ho Chi Minh snuck across into Vietnam during world war 2. This is not to say that everything the U.S. did was justified, however given the fact that to this day Cuba is still under a communist dictatorship, and Venezuela has just become one, it's fair to say that Latin America would be worse off today had it not been for the U.S.
