I hope you enjoy these videos of me working on and playing with or driving my Triumph Spitfire . This was originally bought by me in 2017 after a wait of twenty years - my mum had one one when I was small and I always loved it but I was stopped from owning one myself every time I mentioned it. When I bought it it was a 1973 Triumph Spitfire MKIV 1300 with twin exhausts and Solex ADDHE Carburettors. It was loud and it was fast! After the big ends went I had the engine replaced with all that was available to me at the time, a Triumph 1500 engine so it became by default a 1973 Triumph Spitfire 1500 for all intents and purposes, especially when I swapped out the Solex to fit twin HS4 SU Carburettors. I have repaired, renovated and restored various parts and have resprayed the entire car, polished it and waxed it in between blasting around the local area as a daily driver. I just love it and it brings me great joy. Welcome to my channel, I hope you enjoy watching all the kayak fishing around the UK, mostly in the North Sea - in the sea and river, fishing for cod, bass, tope, dogfish, smoothound, thornback ray, whiting, wrasse and anything else I can target There's scuba diving off the North Norfolk Coast and Suffolk, wreck diving, reef diving, river diving, even Cenote Diving, in the Red Sea off Egypt, the Mediterranean off Malta and Gozo and in Mexico, Brazil, Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Pembrokeshire in Wales, Swanage and Plymouth and of course the diving with sharks in South Africa. There's kayaking too, including surfing sailing and touring in the UK and abroad and a bit of snorkelling, Plenty of videos too of me fiddling with and driving my classic car, a 1973 Triumph Spitfire and other cars get a look in too. There's cooking, eating, travelling around various cities in Europe - Berlin in Germany, Naples and Rome in Italy, plus the Vatican; Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv and elsewhere in Bulgaria; Lefkosia / Nicosia and much of Cyprus, Krakow in Poland, there's Malta too. Istanbul in Turkey just outside Europe too, and Egypt around Hurghada. Further afield there's a bit of South Africa and Latin America with the Mayan Riviera of Mexico and Rio de Janeiro, Paraty and Isla Grande in Brazil. There's even a bit of Northern Ireland and parts of England mixed in with the nonsense of East Anglia in a camper van with my daughters! If you enjoy one video please watch another and consider subscribing so you don't miss future uploads however crap they might be! Thanks and regards, Mark

Oh dear! Make sure you get a 'Payen' replacement. The cheaper ones are quite failure prone. David at Anglian Triumph can get you one I would think. The SUs look way better than those awful Solex things you had. It'll probably be easier to tune now too. Do the gasket soon - you don't want to leave all that water in the engine and exhaust system. I look forward to seeing you rag it around the town again soon!

Hi Steve. t's a payen gasket that went. Again. It's being done at the moment - hopefully be able to run a few gallons through the new SU's very soon! Certainly are easier to tune, and there's loads of instruction out there which is where the solex fall down. They took ages to get right on the 1300 then when I swapped to a 1500 it was just impossible to eliminate excessive backfiring on deceleration.

@@Codbotherer Maybe the head needs a skim. Hopefully not. Do you torque it down again after a few hundred miles? Good luck with it anyway.

@@MostEasterlySteve Hope not, the head was skimmed a year ago. No mention of it being retorqued before?

@@Codbotherer The head on these is fairly hardy because it's cast iron - much less prone to warping than alloy heads. But after the head has been refitted, which should always involve a new head gasket, it should be re-torqued after about 300 miles or so - some people might say 500 miles but I reckon 300 miles is about right. Always torque it down in the sequence given in the workshop manual - I can't remember if the 1500 has 10 or 11 head studs but there's a sequence to do it in. In those first few hundred miles the (new) head gasket is bedding down so the head needs to be tightened down. It is one potential reason some gaskets blow again. The other really important thing is that both faces (the bottom of the head and top of the block) need to be spotlessly clean before fitting the new gasket.

@@MostEasterlySteve Thanks for the info - I'll make sure to get that done, I'm sick of this happening.

One of them things when it comes to owning and running a classic, annoying but you've just gotta do it. On the plus there not too hard to do and a good opportunity to get the the head converted to unleaded (if its not been done) at the same time 👍

Beyond my capabilities unfortunately. So cost and time lost :-(

Just ran into the same problem!

I'm sorry to hear that. Sucks doesn't it. I drove it back from having some work done and put 3 litres of coolant through the oil - which had only been in there for 320 miles.

@@Codbotherer after rebuild I had a axle problem which set me back about 3 months of not being able to drive. Got the axle replaced and got about 1000 miles out of it and then blew the head gasket 😂I realized I didn't re-torque the head. At least we caught it before it was a major catastrophe lol
