A phase-off between two holy grail phasers - a 1974 MXR Phase 90 (bud box, script logo) and a 1975 Musitronics Mu-Tron Phasor II. These are two of the most timeless, classic, amazing phasers ever built.
On paper they're very different - the MXR is a 4-stage phaser with only one knob (speed); whereas the Mu-Tron is a 6-stage phaser, with additional depth & feedback controls. Both are utterly unbelievable though.
Which do you prefer? And why? Comment below!
Guitar is a Fender Strat through a Cornell Romany Plus (recorded with an sE Electronics RNR1 Ribbon) and a Hughes & Kettner Puretone (recorded with a 57)

I have both. The Mu-Tron wins hands down - not even close. The Mu-Tron is open, airy, very tweakable - it does much more than the demo here. The MXR is very nasal sounding. Bud Ross (Ross phasor fame) improved the MXR Phase 90 a bit by adding a Recycle knob on his Ross concept of the MXR phase 90, but it still remained very nasal sounding. There is only ONE phaser thats better than the Mu-Tron Phasor II and that is its bigger stereo brother, the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase. If you've never heard one, strap in because its incredible. I've wanted one for 40 years but could never afford one. It can do the Phasor II duties and in additio, create Leslie like sounds. The Bi-Phase IS the King of All Phasors.

Mu Tron is great …the Bud Box 1974 MXR is a extremely awesome pedal actually used on Pink Floyd’s records … I have one and it’s chewy and sweet

Musitronics Phasor II is the 2nd best phasor ever made. Period. The only phasor better is its bigger brother, the Bi-Phase which consisted of two Phasor IIs linked in stereo. This phasor (and other Musitronic gear) was expensive, top shelf, pro equipment in its day ($129.95 in '75!!!) and the price was out of reach for most amateurs and beginner musicians. If I recall correctly, the MXR Phase 90 came out in '74 but it was a fraction of the price of the superior Phasor II.

The script 90. To my ears it was a fuller, more pleasing phase.

mu-tron has more range and flexibility and is cooler looking. phase90 sounds great, still nice to look at, and fits better on your pedalboard.

I grew up with these pedals. The Mutron ll is not a true phasor. It's like a combination chorus with exponential phasor kind of thing. The Phase 90 is a real phase. I think it's a triangle wave phasor. Rock & Rollers usually go for the MXR. Us Funk/R&B guys like the Mutron. Has more variations.

just got a 1976 Mu Tron Phasor today it does have more "funk" sound so that makes sense. It DOES sound f ing good! the weird thing is, someone replaced the Intensity knob with a footswitch giving it two sounds, subtle and full on. ? Does anyone have one that wants to chime in?

Gotta challenge you on that statement. The Mu-tron Phasor two actually has SIX phase-shift stages that can be combined to provide 1, 080 degrees of phasing, whereas the MXR phase 90 only has 1 phase shift stage that provides maximum of only 90 degrees of phasing.

And I should clarify it resembles nothling like a chorus. There is no bucket brigade/delay combined with pitch modulation as found with chorus pedals.
