1974: On The Road With The Beach Boys (Billy Hinsche Beach Boys Tour Film) 

Billy sent this to me as a Christmas present in the early 2000’s and knowing I knew Dennis signed it “love Billy and Dennis” I loaned it to my former room mate and never got it back. As I view maybe this is not the same one yet I sure am enjoying it. Can not believe our. Billy has passed. The one he gave me was a “I Know The Road” documentary. Billy interviewed me about Dennis at least 10 times yet never used it and I did such a stellar job. We miss you Billy. Billy was our first house guest when we moved into our current ocean view home and he named one of our bedrooms the “Historical Billy Hinsche Suite”. He also sat down at our piano and played “Sail on Sailor” the “Ray Charles way”. Gee I miss ya Billy Ricci Wayne.

This video really reaffirms who actually saved the group from being washed. Carl Wilson.

Had the extreme pleasure to play with Billy when he sat in with the group i was in. What a gentleman and one of the most versatile musicians out there, RIP Billy...

Carl played the most gorgeous Rhodes electric piano at the end of "Trader" that I have ever heard. So beautiful, it almost made me cry to listen to

I bought this video from Billy way back when it came out. So good!

First time I attended a Beach Boys concert, I was 10 years old in 1981. And it was one of those concerts where Dennis was a "no show", and there was Bobby Figeuroa, deputizing for him on drums. And I'll never forget, he sang "Sail on Sailor" and was absolutely brilliant as a singer! I always give any drummer who can sing a lead vocal while playing drums mad props for doing so, because to me, it seems like it would take a lot of concentration to do both well at the same time---but Dennis did it as well in the 60s

Thank you for sharing. Miss Billy also. 1974 my senior year of high school. At age of 9 bought my first Beach Boys LP, 'In Concert' better known as the 'Stripped Shirt Album'. Glad I grew up during this period of time and got to enjoy this great catalogue of music. Hearing under the Beach Boys Moon and closing credits brought a happy tear to my eye. Carry on this music Beach Boys Fans!!!

I saw many BB's tours from the early 60's (when Brian still toured) til today. I saw several of the college tour shows. The mid 70's revival they had was amazing. They also toured with original Steely Dan opening. One show I can't forget was Gary Wright and Peter Frampton opening, both peaking, then the BB's would show that live mastery.

I first encountered Billy as a teenager when he joined up with Dean Martin, Jr and Desi Arnez as the group Dino, Desi & Billy. I did not realize he had gone on to tour with the Beach Boys, so cool.

Priceless!! My absolute favorite period of the BB's and I had seen snippets of this documentary when Billy was alive. And after watching it it really puts in to perspective life on the road with the BB's in 1974. Thank You Elora for posting this time capsule of my Favorite Band!

This is amazing thanks so much. I love the BB and Almost Famous movie and the Rutles. This has it all and it would be amazing to colourize this…I also am amazed at how the audience is more reserved than say Altamont, and there’s no women in the entourage.

Just to correct something Mike said in his Finland interview. Toni Tennille, in her book, said she met Daryl Dragon when he auditioned for a play she was producing in San Francisco. The Beach Boys were on vacation and Daryl was looking for a short-term gig before rejoining the group. The Beach Boys were seeking a piano player to replace the one who had left the band to return to college. Daryl suggested Toni and she got the job as the first "Beach Girl" piano player, and Daryl resumed his role as "Captain of the keyboards". Eventually, Daryl and Toni left to begin their successful career as the duo, Captain and Tennille, which was popular in the 70's and 80's. Toni was multitalented as a singer, dancer, pianist, actress, and had her own television show. Daryl was a genius on the keyboards. They married and had a rich career together.👏🌹💕

Very much appreciate your sharing this Elora - I had purchased one of Billy's other films back in those days, but had never seen this one - it's really wonderful. So many memories from those glorious days. I miss them (and of course these wonderful people, some of whom we have lost).

Thank you so much for posting this. What an amazing look into this great band and their crew. They were really at one of their peaks live at this time. Its nice to see Ed Carter getting some exposure, just listen to his picking during the backgammon match.

Thanks so much for posting!! 🙏♥️ Been a fan since I heard California girls in 1965, at the age of 11, and was blown away! Enjoyed every little tone, every little note they made. For a while collected everything and anything. Been to shows - both BB and Brian - here in Sweden. And watched BW performing Smile in England, absolutely an out of the world experience! So grateful to have lived now, to be able to hear and follow the guys. Unmatched, even their bad stuff is better than the good stuff of other groups. Even the session stuff is way better than the Beatles (their session stuff is really bad and boring). The early 70's was the best era of the BB, such a good move bringing Ricky and Blondie into the group! The BB could do and play everything and anything, so versatile, not to mention their harmonies! Heavenly!! Listen closely and you'll hear the most amazing twists and turns, both when it comes to singing and playing, especially during the PS/Smile era and the late 60's/early 70's era. Really really awesome! Music brought to its utmost! 💯🎵🎶♥️

Saw Dino, Desi, & Billy open for Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels in 1966...St.Paul Auditorium. What a show!

In that long ago summer of '74, The Boys came to Denver, mile-high sStadium, & opened for CSNY , in their "reunion " tour. I was there, & I saw niot just a fantastic set by The Boys, but it was so good, that bhy the time CSNY came onstage, half of the 55,000 had left, & by the time they finished their set, less than 2000 [people remained. Clearly, The Beach Boys stole the show. It was great ! ---------------MJL

Makes me want to hear Dino, Desi, and Billymusic again. If you listen to their albums and the Ricci Martin album, there’s a lot more depth than you might think, although they made a bunch of great catchy singles.

It looks in hindsight like the band was trying to figure out who they had been now that their first burst of fame ended. They still could sell seats to shows but who were they and even though much time has passed since then the look here in 1974 was totally out of sinc with their music. They looked like Beach Boys who lost their way. Mike Looked like he needed to get back with the Maharishi and the rest of the guys had a hippie look that didn’t fit the music. Eventually it all came around and they rediscovered themselves and had a tremendous career span.

49:48 Sorry, Jimmy Guercio...Dennis certainly had charisma and he was absolutely Integral to the BB, but he was most definitely NOT Brian's equal, musically, and he did NOT surpass him. And Dennis himself knew this very well. Again, not to take anything away from Dennis, but he wasn't Brian.

Sorry, but Mike Love is a jerk-always has been.

While this is of historical value, the music itself sucks.

If they could go back in time the Wilson’s would have dropped the drugs and Mike Love. Both were the downfall of the group.

The band is a rudderless ship without Brian Wilson! He was their leader and of course the greatest songwriter of the last 100 years..This just shows the complete randomness of those times and everyone trying to kiss Carls ass..and also denny and Al an Mike trying to come to grips with their own mortality...And of course make money..Billy was Carls brother in law so of course he was going to put him in the band...But I love to see Carl an Dennis hangin out keeping it together...Brothers till the end..😊
