Here it is, my old Super 8 clip from the Topographic Oceans show. I put on a snippet of "Ritual" so there would be a soundtrack. As I said, most of it is really dark, but this is what's going on to the best of my recollection:
0:08 Pre-show stage and audience footage.
0:27 "Firebird Suite" intro.
0:47 Wakeman appears.
0:51 The rest of the band starts showing up.
0:56 Lights come up and "Siberian Khatru" begins.
1:30 Mirrored disk at beginning of "Close To The Edge"
1:42 It's really dark, but I recall this being part of the "I Get Up I Get Down" section, with dry ice fog rolling across the stage.
1:54 The band is lit up again.
2:02 Jon is playing percussion now, I believe this is "Ritual".
2:14 Light show during "Ritual".
2:59 I hadn't completely used the film, so when I got home I filmed the "Topographic Oceans" album cover for a few seconds.
12 March 1974, University Arena, Albuquerque, NM. I probably paid $5 for the ticket. That was the rate for most shows then. I remember a hot air balloon tethered outside the arena while we were waiting in line to get in, with the TFTO cover being the graphic on the balloon. I wonder what ever happened to that balloon.
Posted with written permission from Jon and RIck...haven't heard back from Chris, Steve & Alan yet.

Very interesting footage, makes me wish I'd been there, too. Thanks for sharing it. What is the date and location of this show?

Thanks for that info. AFAIK, there is no audio recording of that concert.

Steve, the Wichita 3/12/74 date on Forgotten Yesterdays isn't totally solid, so if you can send me a scan of your ticket stub or newspaper article showing they were in Albuquerque instead of Wichita on that night, I'll be happy to correct FY. Send the scan to the email address here : forgotten-yesterdays.com

I've seen that date posted on a history of Yesshows, but it is incorrect. I've got my concert ticket, diary, and newspaper clipping to back up my memory (as well as writing the date on the original Super 8 reel when I had it processed).

I have a 219MB .vob file that was created from the original Super 8. It shows slightly better at fullscreen than this .mpg, but not much. Even the original film, shown on a projector, is not much clearer, but it is a little brighter. Unfortunately, after all 18 of my Yesshows to date, this is the only footage I have. I do have some photos of this show, and from one of the Tormato shows, but they're not very outstanding. Special to me, nonetheless.

Amazing footage. But 3/12/74 YES played at Wichita KS, Century II Civic Center. 3/14/74 - Albuquerque NM - The Pit Arena.

Steve, the audio quality is quite good! How did you record it? (Is there any more recording from that concert?) I attended the March 21, 1974 show in San Diego. I recall that they had an elaborate set, very organic shapes, inspired by Roger Dean's images. Do you recall that at the performance that you saw? I was 16 1/2 at that time, my first Yes concert. :-)

Steven, the film was silent Super 8, the audio is just a snippet off my Topographic Oceans CD I added to the video, that's why it sounds good! Yes, very elaborate stage set, PLUS a hot air balloon with Yes graphics tethered outside the arena while we were waiting in line to go in. It was my first Yes concert too, and I was 17. Yes became my favorite band after this show, and have remained so to this day. I've seen them 20 times now (including this one), and just got to see Anderson, Rabin & Wakeman last month in Denver. I hope to catch Yes again in February, we'll see how it goes...

I remember driving from Washington D.C. to the Baltimore Civic Center in 1974 to see my first Yes concert. I was 17 and drove by myself. 4th row, dead center. I immediately recognized the Roger Dean backdrops as well as Mr. Dean himself checking everything. Before the lights went down some strange music began to play softly and got louder. Being my first Yes show I had no idea it was Stravinsky's Firebird Suite. To be honest I don't remember the opening song but when they performed Ritual and the props opened up I was completely blown away!

Interesting...this was my first Yes concert, and I was also 17 at the time. I don't think Roger Dean showed up at this show. There was a hot air balloon tethered outside the arena when we were waiting to get in, and the artwork on the balloon was the Topographic Oceans album cover. I always wondered what happened to that balloon. Albuquerque hosts the International Balloon Fiesta every year in October, and I was always waiting for it to show up again...

Steve, before the show started several people, including Roger Dean checked the props. He was wearing a fringed jump suit and I recognized him because I just saw a photo of him in Melody Maker. awesome show!
