yes, it is...and Matt said as much. It is a million dollar rally race car that gets driven a couple of times a year to circulate fluids. There is no point in changing the gearing.

I don't see how this would be appropriate on any stage. You would never be going slow enough to use 1-3rd (except the start). They could have easily skipped the 2nd gear ratio and given it a taller 5th.

I guess it's because of the value. The street version of the car sells for up to $500,000. I couldn't find a auction price for the race version. I imagine it could be double that.

I appreciate your comment, and your opinion firstly. This is an age old argument, but these things are not still with us today, and in such pristine condition, by being thrashed on a regular basis. It warms my heart that there are people that still rally these things in historic competition and so forth, but I also appreciate the hell out of those who keep them as 'as new' museum pieces. We need both types of owner frankly. One to show off the car for public appreciation on a regular basis, and one to make damn sure that their's won't get wrapped around a tree or any other rally obstacle anytime soon. Besides, if the car is yours it's yours. You do with it as you please. The argument for otherwise is a bit too much like the argument that rich people should just give up their money. Yours IS YOURS. And so it damn well should be.

@@jasonmcmillan4373 I agree. I understand the other side of it here too. SOME cars deserve to be preserved as engineering art. Just like any famous painting or sculpture, some are a cut above the rest and we as car enthusiasts need to ensure their legacy endures. The Lancia Stratos has earned its throne, and deserves its rest. Taken out to stretch its legs and show its still got it, but doesn't need to prove its mettle ever again. Few cars earn such reverence, but these have.

Hi Amesie, yes very surprising. I viewed the results from an historic rally here in the uk over the weekend with two 96's in the rally. They both were in the bottom of the results. I have to conclude that Eric "on the roof" Carlsson was an incredible driver. mark

Saabs success was mainly on Snow and bad gravel. Stratos was made for Italy's and French tarmac/gravel events, it wasnt developed for snow covered sweeden. WRC combined wasn't that important, but individual victories. Lancia wanted to win on their home turfs.

It won WRC Sweden 1975 so it was good for wins on snow too.

garf117 Well yeah with a set up for Greece and Corsica and France tarmac stages with lot's of tight corners and not enough space to actually go fast between them. Though it's a rally car the set up can be changed.

Considering it's a rally car, as MrGreen said it probably had these gears swapped in for a particularly tight rally! Must be a lot of fun offroad but, yeah, not going to risk this car...

Sounds better in factory spec without mufflers. Edit at least they run it in many rallies without them. They sound better without any.

They obviously had a variety of gearboxes to choose from and this ran it's last stage on a rally which had loads of corners and not many straights.

Me: you don't get it do you. With the right gearing it could go 170 or so. It is geared to its last historical configuration, which was for an insanely tight rally stage like Amalfi.

if it has been documented, say, on the internet where everyone can see, and your insurance for a classic car stipulates no offroad or no non-paved driving...yes it could be against insurance. I have classic car insurance, and there are a lot of rules as to what you can and cannot do with your precious metal.

If you look carefully that portion they entered was with small rocks that could stick with those wider race track tires and chip the paint on sills, skirts, fenders.. the 1milion $ insurance would get voided instantly..
