Eye witness to Roger's frame crack'n deal as well. Still a Suzuki fan today. And every time i ride Carnegie SVRA I'll ride into the Trans AMA area and try to find the layout of that '75 track.

I guess you realize how much you're showing your age when you recognize half these guys... I remember seeing a Premier big bike race like this in Saint Petersburg Florida Probably 1973 or 74 stood behind the starting line with a friend of mine so we could get roosted on... I was maybe 11 or 12 years old Although all the racers were very young men I remember my first impression was check out all these old guys riding these big motorcycles .. Very exciting I was pretty much hooked after that...

In early seventies a friend's father was treasurer of Carnegie he had the key to one gates. We would go Friday and camp out for two days. Practice was on Friday. It was the best race every year the Inter Am. Great weekend, look forward to it, for several years.

I was there also, rode there on the back of my brother's norton. Was really surprised to see it behind Brad Lackey looking for a starting line with me and my brother leaning on the truck behind him with another friend. Great video many memories of riding at Carnigie for many years

I was there that day, I remember Roger's front forks breaking off. This was Carnegie's upper International track and the original International track was on the lower part of the park, two great, very rough tracks with awesome uphill and downhill sections. I loved racing on these two tracks. Great memories! The 11:14 mark is the jump were Roger's crash was, you would hit the jump WFO.

I was there for this race standing on the infield side of the big jump where Roger Decoster snapped the forks off his works Suzuki……. I believe this incident is what ushered in the development of full faced Mx helmets…Long live Brad Lackey 👊

Rodger decoster would have one.but his rm370 could not handle him.the bike was not up to the task at hand

I really enjoyed your comment elsewhere about staying at the race HQ and showing one of your other films to the racers and industry types, that's awesome! I was 13 back in '75 and regularly read about all of these guys in the pages of Motocross Action. I wouldn't get the chance to attend a pro race until the following year. My family and I wound up making the trip to RedBud in Michigan multiple times, both for the national races as well as the Trans-AMA events held there. I remember meeting Roger De Coster and Marty Smith (RIP) in the pits during one of those Trans-AMA events. I still have the t-shirt that I created and Smith signed for me at that race One year we wound up staying in the motel that served as race headquarters for the national taking place down at Cycle World in Missouri. I was able to take photos of just about every racer or bike that I wanted to capture when they were preparing for the tech inspection being held in the big adjacent parking lot. Lots of the racers were willing to take the time to pose for a photo with my younger brother and myself. I remember Tony Distefano in particular was a real class act. I grabbed a photo of Jimmy Weinert working out on one of those boxing speed bags that the team had mounted on the door of their box van. Later on Bob Hannah was riding a BMX bike (a Jimmy Weinert bike no less) around in the motel, bunny-hopping fans laying down on the floor. He paused long enough to allow me to grab a photo of him with the bike. All of the racing seemed so great back then but the Trans-AMA events in particular were extra special getting to see the likes of Roger De Coster, Brad Lackey (who had moved to Europe by then) and others. I seem to recall De Coster pretty much owning that series until '78 when Hannah finally managed to topple him. At RedBud one year I managed to grab a lot of photos of the riders during the parade lap when almost no one work a helmet. I also remember Michigan local boy Doug Domokos, the "Wheelie King" who circled the entire RedBud track on just the rear wheel. So many great memories of motocross back in the 70's brought back by your video. Thanks again!

And I thought it was a beat up track when we rode there in the 1980’s……

That is Carnegie cycle park I used to ride there for years ! I was there at those races it was great back then there was many good riders back then ! Rumor has it that all those who riders who came there and raced there complained that the track was to rough!!

I was standing in the start area next to Laurie DeCoster and Anneke Wolsink and I saw Roger crash and I said Roger just crashed and Anneke said "no way" I have picture of them hauling the bike back to the pits in two pieces. The lower triple clamp was a special hollow casting and the steering stem pulled right through the clamp. When Roger got back to the pits he was pissed his face was really torn up. The other bad thing that happened that day is some asshole pushed a truck tire and wheel off the top of the hill and came crashing down on people from behind. It hit the bottom of the hill cleared the track and landed half way across the start straight and then off the other side of the hill where theer was no one around thank God. I understand some people were seriously injured by that tire

I would love to see today's riders wake up and have these bikes and tracks to ride tomorrow. 😁

I have a terrible memory of Tony D's clothing line. Nice dusty track. 70 mph? I don't think so.

It's amazing how many technological advancements came to motocross during the 70's. Large diameter long travel gas forks, monoshocks, reed valves, liquid cooling, disc brakes. Today's bikes are just refined versions with the retrograde exception being the 4 strokers. Smokers? more power, lighter weight goes faster, hence the displacement handicap. Wing-ee-ding-ee-ding-ding-ding, and the smell of burnt klotz. Ah, memories.

That was the year they gave DeCoster three number ones just to make sure you understood who was number one. Then he dominated.

Man Carnegie doesn't look anything like it used to be. I'm trying to understand where this would have been nowadays. Would this be near the training hills? or more towards where the modern track is now?

This is the city, Watsonville, California. Many people come here for the beautiful ocean views, the sweet sweet tamales around railroad ave. Several types of ag products are distributed wether you like it or not. This city is chop suey, tamale, sopas. refried beans etc. Sometimes theres an ill wind that blows no gooooood. This wind creates a Blenzall (green label) trail soooooo sweet and scientific that a new idea is burned into the boys asshole heart. The YZ Monoshock. My name is Friday, I carry a fork. Also I carry a badge with one end that is also a fork. My partner Bill Gannon waits in said car licking his cats butt. It was a cold blustery afternoon on the Pajaro River levee.

It was at this round of the Transit me series that writes that cost ahead one of his worst accidents. Fifth gear hauling ass done one of the straightaways front end on a Suzuki snapped off pitching him to his face at top speed. He was in bad shape and with that bill started work on the project that became known as The Bell Moto Star.❤

I watched Marty Smith race many times. He was the greatest in his day. At Mid-Ohio he raced against 125 cc world Champion Gaston Rahier on a factory Suzuki. Poor Gaston, Smith made him look so bad in order not to lose face he pretended his bike was broke. He couldn't let it look like Smith outride him.

So Cool and classic, I used to hear locals talk about this race at the Carnegie OHV park between Livermore & Tracy, when Rodger D broke his frame in two And Living in Livermore I got to Practice on it for a few years back in the late 1980s on my 87 cr250 & cr500 going through that same lower section with Trees, I couldn't imagine a pro race In such a tight area and thought I was off the track on an enduro Trail LOL, It was never prepped and not a beginners' Track so usually vacant, Great when wet, There are still remnants of it and since it rained last night I think I head over today to check it out on my 08 crf 250 & 450 maybe find a pair of old RM forks with 111 on the Plate

Thanks for posting this awesome historic footage of Carnegie’s Trans-Am track with all those legendary riders. I grew up learning to ride there in the mid eighties through the nineties. I have heard stories about these races taking place there and to this point had only seen two photos from these races. So awesome to finally see actual video footage of how the track was laid out for the race along with how everyone was pitted there. It’s so crazy for me to think all those big box vans, trailers, and even motor homes were actually able to get up that rather steep fire road to even get back up in there to that part of the park. Thanks again for giving me this visual I have always wanted to see from historical Carnegie!
