One of the biggest pos ever built. Had a 75 panther at the same time just hit the key and go. The ski doo made me walk home every time.

I’m a skidoo guy, so I don’t have anything to say to that… I can agree with you that most of the older sleds were high maintenance, but that’s why you have to have a bunch. So you always have at least one that runs!!! Thanks for watching!

This is going to be priceless when I dig into the skidoo 340 I picked up today. Also have a 79 moto-ski 340, parts interchangeable. Thanks for doing this video!
@mattsws
@mattsws Год назад
Yeah, the 1975-1979 motoski nuviks were the same as olympiques. All the same parts. Good luck with your project. Let me know if you have any questions!

@@mattsws quick update, the skidoo will run great for like 5-10 minutes, depending on how hard I run it, and then it'll just slowly die out, hitting the throttle does nothing, then it dies, kind of like it's being robbed of gas or something. Let it cool off, starts up, rinse and repeat. I'm thinking it may be a crappy coil. Maybe a leak on one of the seal, idk.. Season is over, I'll screw around with it this fall lol

I have a 1977 Olympique 340 that I use for ice fishing up here in Manitoba. It purrs like a 44 year old kitten! lol Paid $500 for it and have been riding for 12 seasons on it. I built a wooden "trappers box" between the seat and tunnel on mine and it raised the seat up about 6 inches. Easier on the old back and knees to ride on now.

Great to hear! Mid 70’s Olys are great all-around machines! My uncle has one with a jacked up seat and you’re right, it’s real comfortable on the back and knees. Makes the machine a little tippy tho…

I was given the same sled as yours and I am going through everything.There was 2, 5 gallon pails of pine needles removed just to get started.Ended up pulling the chain case because of broken bolts.It seems like everything is there.All the fuel lines were laying on the frame and disintigrated in the tank. The guy that gave it to me said he bought it new in 1975 so I will have to replace the battery.Good score.

I was always amazed at how much more pep a 377 had vs a 1970s 340 or even a 440fc for that matter. The Mikuni and clutch setup must have made most of that difference... Thanks for watching!!

Matt, nice work, another great video. You have inspired me to go work on my 77 Olympique 440. Or should I go work on my white hooded 75 Oly 300??? Neither are ready yet for snow yet and I've never ridden them. Decisions, decisions......We gotta preserve these old gems.
@mattsws
@mattsws 2 года назад
Hmmmmm, good question…
@mattsws
@mattsws 2 года назад
I think I would go for the 440, just because I always found the “small” olympique 440 to be a peculiar engine… I never understood why they made it. The Olympique was a nice all around sled with several moderate power option, but if you wanted something with a little more power, why not go with a tnt? That being said, I dont think the 440 olys were very popular, so that makes them kinda rare… At least in my opinion! Let me know what you decide to fix up OR better yet, make a video of it!!!!
@cybair9341
@cybair9341 2 года назад
It would be less cumbersome to use the Tillottson integral fuel pump instead of a separate Mikuni fuel pump. It would provide more space to work around the engine and it would look cleaner too.
@mattsws
@mattsws 2 года назад
I would have to agree with you on that one! Thanks for the great tip!

We used to have the exact same snowmobile when i was a kid but ours was widened in the front and had wide plastic skis. it helped a lot for the stability ours was a 1975 as well but there was a big issue with the carburetor when the engine was hot there was a steam lock in he fuel line so we ended up replacing it with a Mikuni carb instead it ran nice with that until there was an leak in the seal behind the variator and we took it to a repair shop to get it fixed but unfortunately the whole crankshaft came apart when they was taking the variator off so the whole engine was replaced by one that was newly renovated and we also got a new seat and a new track the snowmobile that all of these items came from was damaged in a crash
@mattsws
@mattsws 2 года назад
So far I have been lucky and no vapor lock issues with mine... Yeah crank seals can scrap an engine pretty quickly... Mine as new seals so I should be ok. Thanks for watching!!

The original hood had no gauges and was smashed to pieces when I got it... This hood was bought at a swap meet and has a gauge, but the glass is all broken and isn’t hooked up.

Hey Stuart, unfortunately no, the single pole switch is aftermarket. And by aftermarket I mean whatever I had lying around that would do the job! Thanks for watching!!

Looks like the fuel lines got put on in reverse from when you started the video. Which way should they be on this carb? I'm trying to figure this out on a sled I'm trying to resurrect that didn't have fuel lines in the first place.
@mattsws

I noticed that when I edited the video! The way it was before I took the carb apart is the right way!

How do I fix a spark on one cylinder got two new coils have the same machine 79 340 is what I got spark on left right side no spark new coil and plugs still no spark on right any ideas check the points and if so I gotta take the flywheel off right ?
@mattsws
@mattsws 2 года назад
Switch the wiring on you coils from one coil to the other. If the problem changes sides, you have to look at points/condensor/internal wiring. If the problem is still on the right side, you have a problem with the coil or anything after. You can see the points through the flywheel, but if you want to change them you have to take flywheel off.

'?Theres another guy I watch hunter gatherer he fixes eerything has a sonic type cleaner n just throws all his carb fuel things in it he gets carb cleaner about 20 bucks a gallon. just turn it on for bout an half hour to an hour it might be a harbor freight unit but does a really good job cleaning all carborator parts. And has a small like scissor lift pretty cool main ly for motorcycles but hes had cars n vans on it to. I think its very slick for mowers atv's garden tractors etc just a small like garage type shop

Thanks for the tips. I actually just ordered an ultrasonic cleaner on Amazon. Looking forward to using on carbs. Take care!

Can u run a 340 air cooled engine on a 40 to 1 mix?
@mattsws
@mattsws Год назад
That’s what I run mine at. With modern oils, you can even go to 50:1, but most people I know don’t want to risk things on a 50 yo engine, so they run around 40:1.

Why would you run ethanol gas in it ?Never do that with any small engine.
@mattsws
@mattsws 2 года назад
Totally agree, but where I'm from, even Premium pump gas has ethanol in it now... We used to still be a able to get zero ethanol gas at Shell, but since about 1-2 years that has ethanol in it aswell... I use additives to bump up octane and get it to last a little longer, but that the best I can do without spending a fortune on race gas....
