Yep, this model doesn't come with a telltale for some reason. You can add one fairly easily by drilling into the water jacket, but I install a new impeller every year so it's not worth it for me.
Had the same problem with mine I ran it in a bucket and didn’t see a water stream so I freaked out and dropped the lower unit changed the thermostat did a full cooling system flush but I did some research and saw this video only to find out I’m an idiot and it does have a stream hole lol
Gabe White sooo why is it some of these pump water out of the 2 holes up high on the lower unit and some don’t ? Mike runs a little out the exhaust and that’s it.
When they don’t smoke that’s an issue, either crosshatching on the cylinder bores has worn out, or the mix doesn’t have nearly enough oil, this engine should have a haze of smoke at idle
These motors have a thru the hub water exhaust. The 2 holes are for exhaust relief at idle. Most do not have the overboard “pisser” stream but one can be added to the vent plug on top of the block.
Hey buddy did u make it any video when u had this motor for link and zinc? I have the same motor finally i fixed it but the iddle is hight i think, i cleaned the carbs replaces a lot parts but i dont know how to do synchronization. thanks an advance
i got a rebuilt Johnson 60 hp 2000 year, they rewired my whole ranger boat ,dash & control cables and steering system replaced it from duel rod high torq steering unit for a 150 outboard unit i had it fit on by a ranger dealer 100 miles away from me Gregg
I have a similar motor 1975 Johnson 65hp and it’s have a rough start takes awhile to start and dies in neutral works while using the throttle I cleaned the carburetors changed spark plugs change ignition coils I change fuel pump change fuel line and bulb what else could be the problem?
In addition to sending water thru the motor to cool things, these also send water down the outer exhaust housing which is why you sometimes see water coming from the two exhaust ports. It is not an accurate gauge of how well your water pump and thermostat are working. Best thing is to use an infrared thermometer to check operating temperature since these motors do not have a telltale.
The best thing to do is make sure a stream of water is coming out of your tell tell on the right back corner of your motor. If you run it hard like that it will be trouble.
@@jackcoultas7869 basically you drill into the top of the exhaust cooling area. Try searching outboard service bulletin 2276 on Google, that has some information for certain engines, it probably works for others
Hey there, So I've recently bought a boat that has this motor on it. It runs great on land but in the water when you throttle it up it completely dies nearly instantly. It will idle in the water just fine. Any idea of what may be happening? I'm in the research phase of troubleshooting so I haven't done anything yet. Any info would be greatly helpful. Thank you and thanks for sharing.
Wire as it was running.. no noticeable difference.. . Turns out to be the crankcase seal on the bottom was leaking bad...plus the exhaust was clogged with years of carbon build up....
Fuel , air , spark , compression is all you need .. right? Wrong!!! I have the same motor.. the bottom cylinder seemed not to be working.. it had great spark.. the carb was perfect. But when I pulled the plug
It’s the carbs.. there’s a service bulletin from 1976 addressing the issue, my motor has the same issue.. you have to modify the carbs.. drills some holes bigger and replace the idle jet to a 32
You are correct! There was a service bulletin for this motor that addresses this issue. It has been a few years so I can't remember the exact specs, but you basically have to bore 2 or 3 orifices out to a wider diameter inside the carb. I had to specially order the bits on amazon, but the repair was quick and painless when they came in.
Hi won, I have a 60hp version of this but I think it's been fiddled with before, if you still have the motor could you please send me some of electrics, thanks..Cool vid
You can't adjust the fuel pumps on these motors. They are directly driven by pulse pressure coming from the crank case. If you're having issues with fuel pressure you'll likely have to rebuild the pump. Normally the issue is either with the diaphragm inside the pump or the one way check valves. The kits are relatively inexpensive.
ya my buddy said same thing sounds like a plug wire i changed all 3 coils i bought the engine from my girlfriends bestfriends landlord he said a tenant left it behind so i gave him 100 bucks for it cause i wacked a rock with my 60hp johnson havent come across a foot yet but sooner or later im sure il vfind one at scrap yard lol anyways that evinrude starts great i took it out a few times and so far its been a 70hp trolling motor lol put it in gear in water theres barely no rpm troll all day however there was two occassions where it suddenly opened right up for maybe a mile then back to idle speed i can fix my 4 wheeler motorcycles skidoo This is the first outboard that i ever worked on Theey seem to be a career in themselves compared to 4wheelers and stuff lol i have two johnsons same size for parts Tomorrow im gonna try the plug wires and new set of plugs and see if anything changes im not the greatest when it comes to electrical issues lol cards and stuff no problem thanks for the tip well see tomorrow what happens cheers buddy
Got the exact same motor found it in a garage my girlfriend best friend was renting the house I asked the landlord he said tenant left it behind give me 200$ take it an I sure did lol it was rebuilt I had to change coils and power pack I did the water pump too runs great my boats aluminum so she rips with that on back lol
@@crackshotcastle i have one myself and was curious there is no weep hole on them ? Where is the water supposed to come out on these engines from the water pump ?
all the comments about the water pump ha ha ha these motors dont have a telltale at least not from factory and i wouldnt trust the temp sensor in the head they go bad after all these years best bet is to put a temp sender on head run a wire to dash put a temp gauge in very easy to do very inexpensive
Ru bin there is no telltale on this model year. If you look closely, you can see water coming from the prop exhaust. It has a brand new impeller and runs flawlessly with no overheating.
