Had a 76 and a 77 back in the early 80’s. My older brother helped me tear down both bikes and we even split the cases!! We took the best parts of both and built a single bike. Rebuilt the engine and repainted everything. Bike was a screamer but a little on the heavy side. I still remember the big long mono-shock that went all the way up to the neck!! This was my first real bike and rode it until 86 when I scored a used 83 RM250. I miss that old YZ!😢👍

I bought a1977 YZ250 in 1983 when i was 14. That bike made me strong. You had to realy hang on, that bike hit the powerband hard. It ended up with broken rod. I currently have xl600r. I wish i still had that YZ250.

Awesome bike I’ve never seen those air forks until now never knew the 70s bikes had those

That is an X model. It superceded the C model that had air forks. The X model came delivered with the forks filled with nitrogen gas, not air. The chambers on top of the fork tubes were nitrogen accumulators. This was done in an effort to stabilize the spring rate due to the heat generated by the constant compression of regular air which expanded inside the forks causing the pressure to rise and stiffen the front suspension during races or hard riding conditions, which was not a good thing to have happen.

Holy crap my bike , loved that freaking thing and it held its own against my buds 77 RM, yeah that baby was a wheelie machine. Remember always walking it down to local gas station to put air in the forks ,

I had that bike in the early 80’s when I was in my early 20’s, sold it cheap, I wish I kept every one of my old mini bikes and dirt bikes!

That was a mid year release bike designated 1976 YZ125X . The earlier released YZ125C did not have the air forks. That was my first MX bike. Great memories!

This is definitely a race bike, some tracks would let us wire up the kick stand others made us take them off . They were handy when practicing during the week if you didn’t have a milk crate handy. Love your channel I live in the northwest corner of Connecticut and am bound and determined to get to your shop.

I had one exactly like this (without the porcupine Head) that and I can tell you it was an absolute ANIMAL on the track. At the time I was 15yrs old and weighted about 170lbs. I was the envy of all my buddy's. The air caps were totally adjustable making the front handling awesome. The mono shock was the first of its kind and created a constant downward pressure on the swing arm for absolute traction to the rear wheel. If my memory serves me correct, Yamaha was first with the mono shock and 2 years later Kawaski came out with Uni-Trak and 4 to 5 years later Honda came out with ProLink, and I forget what Suzuki had but the Yamaha dominated for years over the other bikes. The bike in this add is in mint condition. Love to have one again just for old memories sack.

As much as I like the durability of plastic tanks those metal tanks had such great lines to them.

I love it , I was blessed enough to have been able to ride one of these when I was twelve , that one appears to be missing the factory black rubber bungy that goes front to rear on the middle of the tank ....

'76 was a inventive year for Yamaha,..... the mono shock, pressurized nitrogen forks (one year wonder for that idea). The new release of the TT500 in a yellow on black frame,.... Honda was on the rails trying to beat that machine. The track was ripped by Hanna and the team, that was the year I started racing.,... great memories that feel like yesterday. A few years later the '79 TT500 came out in El Toro orange my first Thumper! Today my corral is full of Hondas,..... how life changes.
