One of the things we came across right away in addressing some very loose steering was the lack of available parts for the 76/77 steering system. Turns out the 78/79 parts; tie rods, center link, pitman arm, etc...are readily available and widely considered a better system anyway.

I have a 77 F150 too, and am starting to see some steering problems. This is the single most helpful piece of advice I've found. Thank you.

No. Look on rock auto. They have everything. The only reason to upgrade is if youre doing a lift. You can't find a drop pitman arm for 77 and earlier. But you can for 78-79. Then you upgrade steering to fit. And as for the rag joint.....easily available

just had to replace all of them on my 76 F-150. drag link, track bar , tie rod, stabilizer steering shocks. upgraded to heavy/custom track bar and drag link. most of the stuff you find now for older fords are heavy duty parts. stronger than oem parts. good luck restoring upgrading. your 77 Ford.

Luckily I’ve got a 79 even though I was after earlier but for years I’ve gratefully thankful to the universe given me a 79 instead 🙏🏼!

Thank you for posting this video. I bought my son a 1977 f-150 4x4 that needs some tlc including the front suspension. This sounds like the way to go. Again Thanks

The general consensus seems to be that the 76/77 setup just sucks. I have a 76 and luckily happen to have a 79 parts truck to use. I changed the pitman arm on the 76 the other day as it was the only loose component i found and it still handles horribly. Next time I have to mess with it I’m just doing the swap

Oh buddy the questions you answered in this video, to bad I found it after the frustration of looking, thank you man I now got it figured out under 78 f150 parts arrived today from LMC Truck, was the steering a pain to get done? I’m replacing stabilizer, drag link and inner tie rods along with wheel bearings and u-joints

Upgraded my '77 to far better '78/'79 set up in 1986 after my first drive over the mountain to visit family.

I have a 76 and those parts are widely available, just not from LMC. The parts you bought would be valuable in a situation where you're lifting the truck, but for others that will never lift their trucks this is wasteful. There is no drop pitman arm available for the older style, but there is one available for the system you used (78+). Nice truck, stuff like that makes all us rust-belter's jealous

Can you give the listing on ford truck enthusiasts so I can read up on it ? Date of the post will do. Thank you.

ehh the 76-77 style handles and steers pretty bad, plus the ball joint being in the pitmarn arm instead of the drag link on the 76-77 means every time that joint wears out you have to change the pitman arm instead of just changing the drag link with all 3 joints in it.

Thanks , excellent video. Wish I had seen it earlier because I went thru the exact same problem trying to get 1977 parts only to finally realize my 77 has already has a worn 78 steering gear setup. Need to replace the tie-rod ends, drag link etc . Bought Moog (DS917 , DS922 and ES2064L) as it seems to have a good rep. Steering box is also on way out so finding it challenging to get the right one locally here in NJ. Plenty online but not sure who is a good supplier ? I did find the steering column to box coupling you mentioned was hard to find. It's a Dorman Part 31004 . At least I think it is the right one ? Plenty on Ebay Cheers

Get a drop pitman arm for 78-79. Then upgrade to 78-79 tie rods/center link. Thats the only way it'll fit. Almost all parts available on rock auto. Ebay and Amazon for drop pitman arm which you'll need for 6 inch lift. I'm doing one on my 76 now

@@nicholasbrown6481 how did the 6 inch lift come out. Just picked up a 1976 f150 4×4 and did a 3 inch body and 6 inch suspension lift and now the steering is all out of wack. Going with a drop pitman arm from Amazon and 79 f150 steering components from lmc truck. Just curious how it worked for your 76. Thanks.

Which website did you order the lower tie rod from? I believe rock auto sells the part, dont know if it fits a 1976 ford F150. 78 part

Thank you for the video. I have the same truck model 1977 4x4 etc. I am having the same problem with finishing parts. Where did you order your parts from? Also did you need to purchase a new pitman arm? Do you have part numbers? Appreciate the help.

Yes you have to switch it to the t type, so I understand , also I was told that red head makes a steering gear box so maybe if you had a red head steering dear box made to fit the t typ pitman arm ? I also have a 1977 f150 4×4 and , I am having all sorts of problems getting it figured out , I am understanding that 1978 1979 f150 4×4 will swap out except for the pitman arm , if I had the money , and could risk ordering the wrong parts , it wouldn't be so bad
@MunsonMischief
@MunsonMischief 2 месяца назад
@@stevepearson6316 Yep the 78/79 steering system is the way to go. I did't change the steering gear because the guy that was working on it for me said it was still in good shape. But when I ordered all the parts to switch it from the 76/77 front end to the 78/79 front end, I ordered the pitman arm too. Been steering very good ever since. That said...the truck is currently in the shop getting a full 460 swap, vintage air ac, drum to disc conversion (rear), hydroboost brake system...and a new readhead steering gear. Going to come out with more power, better braking, better steering, and for the love of all that is good....air conditioning.

@@MunsonMischief I am in the very beginning of restoring my 77 , no rust paint good engine runs great just got a new rear differential put in hopfully the transmission is good it seems to be after I replaced vacuum modulator...and with the info about the steering components all is looking better , so any outher info about swapping over to the 78-79 would be very helpful, switching to a 1978 79 f150 4×4 front steering right ?
@MunsonMischief
@MunsonMischief 2 месяца назад
@@stevepearson6316 Yep the 78/79 steering system just bolts right up. Unfortunately I can't remember where I ordered everything but anytime I went to a site I input that I had a 78 instead of a 77 and all the correct 78 parts were there. I think I ordered MOOG for just about everything in the steering.
