That sound. It's exactly as I remember it, even the sputter until it warmed up. For a couple seconds I was back there, I was the guy pulling out going for a ride. Holy shit that felt nice. I'm feeling all nostalgic now. I was 17, just out of high school and had recently come off the motocross track and sold my '77 YZ 125 when I found a 500 mile '77 DT 400 at Blackman's Yamaha. I convinced my mom to buy it for me- $960.00!! (no idea why I remember that) and I rode that bike every day for several years.Yamaha's were bullet proof. That was my 3rd bike but I think I was already hooked after the first time I rode the neighbor kids Rupp mini bike a few years earlier. And I still ride almost every day. My BMW K1300S is an awesome machine but I miss doin' it in the dirt. Thanks for that vid!

Hello. The 400 DTMX was not a powerfull bike because of the environmental and noise laws in California. The 1974 360 DT and 1975 400 DT's where more expressives and powerfull. My 250 DTMX is more fun to ride. And Yes, I am a gentleman rider, not a top racer.
I had a 79 dt250 that lasted years and survived all the abuse of my brothers, friends and the hardest myself! I've got a 76dt400 that's all there and I'm in the process of restoring now. Run strong when I bought it. But tore it down due to the wrist pin knocking. So new top end and crank seals, reeds, clutch and mite as well update to 12v system. Clean up the cilinder porting cast flaws to aid in flow and should be fine . I've always wanted one!
This was my first new motorcycle. I put an mx head on it, a throttle that is wide open at 67 degrees, and magnesium air forks on the front. I still miss that bike.

I’d love to see how you got renovating the 1974 Honda MT250. Just rebuilding my second MT. I have the DT400B and the DT250MX. There quick. But my favourite is still the 1977 Kawasaki KE250B1. It feels like my 1976 kx250a3. It’s beautifully made. A bit to quick for its tyres. Spins up second and third even though your not trying too. All the old motocross and trail bikes are fantastic to ride 👍 well done. Your bike are a credit to you. I think my favourites are your DT250mx and that lovely F11. They are so useable. i remember 1 was 14 in 77 and we were on a family trip to british colombia,in banff there sat this brand new motorcycle on the street in banff,my dad and i looked closer at it and it was,what my 'Dad referred to as a "monoshock",i thought that that was pretty cool

amazing sites and countryside, and a great old bike, but it seems the front end is low making the bike unbalanced, I thought soft springs but it seems you can push the tubes downward from the clamps. that must be a great bike for cobblestone roads.
I recall from the period (1970s) that when the idea to move the twin shock setup forward on the swing arm the first issue was with the shocks overheating. Doubling travel on crappy components meant hot oil, lost dampening and control. I bought a set of marzochi reservoir shocks for my Elsinore after moving the shocks up with a kit I bought at the time. The mono shock was radical. But how did those initial mono shocks handle heavy use? Were they up to snuff? i stopped riding off-road when i got married (no longer married; still ride off-road).
The Cow dub over threw me over 😆 I haven't heard mine run yet, but I now know what I'll hear every time I feed 'er the hay! Hopefully parts aren't too difficult to find here in Canada. I've been looking for a match to figure out which bike I have exactly, this would be it. The only thing I am unsure of is the shape of the tank, I don't have the side covers. I wonder if this bike's gas tank tapers off under that cover or if the tank is shaped just like the way it looks? Anyway, I've watched all the DT 400 videos I could find... enjoyed this one the most 👍
Hello. There have been two differents shape for the fuel tank and side covers. The early ones had a 45° joint at the rear of the tank. The late ones had a more classical shape. Great video they are not meant to be touring bikes like a new Tenere! But they are some of the best dual purpose bikes I have 2,78 DT 400 and in 79 had a new DT 125 when I was 18!
Yes, you are right, but I was talking of homologated trail bikes, not racing Motocross bikes. In 1948, the HRD Vincent Black Shadow had a monoshock cantilever rear suspension.
