Porsche took the performance automobile world by storm when it released the 1978 928. It was rear-wheel drive, front engine, and V8 powered performance car was a 180 degrees from its previous offerings. The 1978-1995 Porsche 928 proved Germany could make a genuine style American muscle car Bavarian style.

The 928 is one of the best cars of the 20th Century. It was an immediate favourite car of mine growing up in the 80s and getting an interest in cars.. The fact that the styling hadn't changed too much in 18 years is proof of how ahead of it's time it was in 1978.

And, it still looks current, today. The only thing that they would need to change, would be the headlights, as the evolution of lighting could improve the moving headlights (although, 80/100 watt halogens in the 8" original european headlights were the equal of what we have today). Everything else? Perfect.

I had two 928's, a '79 and an '86 - loved them both. Gorgeous lines (OK, except when you put the headlights up - I used the large parking lights until it got really dark), futuristic interior, all the toys, and good old fashioned American-style front engine, rear drive V8. A true luxury sport coupe; they managed to give it a smooth ride without sacrificing handling, and believe me, 300HP in the late eighties could embarrass 90% of the cars on the road. Everybody back then thought Porsches were weak little rear-engine things; nobody could believe it when you popped the hood and showed them a V8 (or did a smokin' burnout). I've owned a lot of of higher end and unusual cars, everything from Cadillac and Lincoln convertibles to Mercedes 450SL's, Audi Quattro, DeLorean, Porsche 944 and 944 Turbo, Plymouth Prowler, Cadillac XLR, and Ferrari 360 Spider, to name some; of all those cars the 928 is my overall favorite as being the best combination of looks, performance, luxury, and even practicality. (The video doesn't mention that they were hatchbacks with fold-down seats; you could fit, for example, a large piece of furniture back there when necessary with no problem.)

The 928 was a German Corvette. The 928 was supposed to compete with the Corvette and has a more similar GT body style to the corvette than the family car looking firebird (we are talking 1979). The 928 like the corvette came in 1 model with that frame and body. No 4 door version with 6 cyl available. The 928 only had seats in the back to pay less in tariffs which corvettes did not have to worry about. The Trans-Am was a beefed up Pontiac regular car. Plus nobody would say "instead of buying a $6,000 firebird I'll spend $42,000 on a 928. A corvette was more of a realistic jump.. I bought my 1980 928 in the year 2000 and I still have it. Spotless and garaged kept with only 38,000 miles. I'll never sell it.

Hmm. Disagree on the 928 being a muscle car, or comparable to the Trans am. It did not have a flexible propshaft either, it was deliberately not flexible at all. The 928 was teutonic German engineering, and made the Trans am look like a series 1 Land Rover, with respect to technology.
@davidbartley989
@davidbartley989 2 года назад
I agree - comparing the 928 to a Trans Am or any other American muscle car is an insult. The 928 was a grand tourer. I think calling it a "sports" car is also inaccurate. The car is intended for long-distance enthusiast driving, not drag racing.

I was heading to Christchurch on SH1. It was a beautiful day, and I was driving my 1985 Firebird T/Top 5speed with the 305 V8. Up until then I felt as if I owned the road, I recall looking in the rear view mirror and the road behind was empty, then several seconds later something made me take another glance. My moment of owning the road had just come to and end, as sitting behind me was this Black and very menacing 928S. It wasn’t following for more then a second or two, before it blew past me like a Focke Wolf 190. That was in 1985, a week later I bought my very first Porsche 928S2, a white 1986 5 speed manual. Since then I’ve had another two and they have been rock solid and bulletproof. Although saying that, they have to be treated well, and regularly maintained, just like any thorough breed does.

There was something very cool about the S, mine started in first gear, the interior seemed cooler and more cozy, I had the glacier white with dark navy leather, I loved that car, but it was totaled while parked on the street, frggn gutted, I replaced it with the S4, altho more powerful with the quad cam it never had quite the same magic of the S, but still have the S4 15 years later, just had a engine out rebuild, deleted 2 of the mufflers, sound and runs amazing, has that hairy chested sports car feel as compared to the soulless computerized cars of today.

I had a late 1986 built 928S with the big brakes and other tidbits from the 1987 S4. Drove it for 5 years and it was a better GT than 99% of today's GTs. I wish I still had it. I actually ran into the guy that bought it from me 13 years later and was able to visit it. Sadly it had fallen into disrepair. He had not been able to keep up with the maintenance. He offered to sell it to me for a song, but at that time I had too much on my plate. If 2018 shapes up to be the $$$ year I'm hoping I might just track down an 84-86 in restorable condition and Resto-Mod it... Sometimes I daydream about my Black on Black 928s Manual reimagined with a modern Panamera engine and either a modern 6 speed manual, a PFK style, or an 8-12 speed auto. But the thing that pumps me up about this daydream the most is a set of Porsche PCCB (carbon ceramic brake system), with black calipers instead of yellow.

OK, so I may be exaggerating the %, but seriously, most women think this car is hideous. I liked the design, it was so different. So did Mazda - they stopped copying the 924's styling to switch to copying the 928 styling in 1985.

In 1992, I was driving to work on I 80 We had a snowstorm the night before and the roads were icy..everyone was doing about 30 mph. A 928 passed me in the fast lane doing probably 70...about 4 miles later, he was on the side of the road, with 5 other cars in the pileup. I thought he's the kind of guy that gives porsche drivers a bad name.

One of the designers for the 63 sting ray was a German and went back to Germany and helped with the design of the 928. You can see the influence from a side view.

Trans Ams were actually pretty close to the 911 in straight line performance for its entire lifespan, all the way up until it was discontinued in 2002. The 2002 Porsche 911(Carrera 2) had 320 horsepower, ~290 ft/lb torque The 2002 Trans Am (WS6 Ram Air) was rated at 325-345 (it is well known that the LS1’s in these cars were underrated, most put out around 365, with a good 5-15 extra ponies at speed when the ram air system came into affect). Torque figures were 365 if I remember correctly (also underrated). The Pontiac also had a much wider power band with 90% of max torque available at around 1200 rpm. The Powertrain was incredibly robust as well, with a solid rear axle. Even with the front weight bias causing extreme wheel spin in 1st and 2nd gears (in contrast to a heavy rear bias for the Porsche, which have it a huge advantage off the line), the Pontiac matched or beat the 911’s 1/4 mile time. Give both cars drag slicks and you would likely see the Trans Am take the 911 by at least .5 sec and 5 mph trap speed. The story was the same in the early 90’s with the LT1. In the 80’s, the anniversary edition Trans Am with the turbo six put down 0-60 times in the mid-4’s, besting even the fastest 911 turbos of the day. Only the 1/2 million $ 959 would have beat it. Now handling braking and overall feel are a completely different story. I would love to have either, but am actively looking for a 996 (I know) as a weekend car. I plan to upgrade the suspension, add a little power, lighten it and track it for fun.

and what brought the turnaround in the 2000s? An SUV! The Cayenne! the 928 was my favorite Porsche ever. $28K in 1978? That is almost the $85K price in 1995. Or even today!

I’ve drove many when I worked at a car dealership I don’t think I ever drove the GTS however most of the 920eights had very sloppy gear shifters. It felt as if you were shifting through pudding. Other Porsche models had much crisper shifting. However it was luxurious it was quick and it was a blast.

Please, get your facts straight. This was not a 'musclecar', nor was it front engined. The entire engine was behind the front wheels, making it a mid engine design, with the transmission at the rear of the car, giving it perfect 50/50 weight balance. It was simply the best GT car on the market for a very long time. Reliable, comfortable, and very fast. I owned one for 8 years, until I was no longer physically able to work on it myself. Terrific car.

The Trans Am was essentially a piece of trash compared to a Porsche 928. This was a 100.000 $ car.
@christianguzman8228

Power gets transmitted to the rear wheels which makes it a rear-wheel drive car. Most of the engine is behind the front wheels so it fits the definition of being mid engine, however, by that kind of a definition the 1973 Mustang would've possibly also been considered mid-engine. I prefer to say it's front engine rear wheel drive.

If the front of the engine is behind the center axis of the front wheels then it's mid engine, but Americans don't normally think like that so the corvette technically in the 84 model was an actual mid engine car. Chevy was concerned with the terminology change would hurt sales so it was marketed as front engine.

@Mark Douglas by that metric there is no such thing as a mid engined car unless you are straddling the motor like a dirt bike.

It seems like so often we change just for change's sake and move to something that isn't as good as what originally was. I get Porsche's reasoning with updating vs. revamping, they had something good, they were right to keep it from a purity standpoint, but maybe not from a sales standpoint. We place too much value on the idea that something has to be radically different to be better. Kind of amazing that in just a little over 2 decades the V6 Camry does 0-60 in the same time as the final production 928 (actually marginally faster I think?) Think of how many grandmas have that under their right foot.
