1978 Chevrolet Pro Serv Training - "Just a Little Misunderstanding" - MCA DiscoVision

This program was found on a dead side of the third disc of "The Choirboys" from MCA DiscoVision.
As this was a dead side, the disc containing this program was likely from a rejected yield. Rejected disc halves were repurposed as dead sides for manufacturing single-sided discs, complete with a layer of residue on the dead side's surface which was meant to prevent that side's playback.
However, this residue can be removed by cleaning it off with isopropanol. Of course, this meant that a person who had the ability to play the content contained therein had content one didn't have the legal right to possess, presenting a problem with regard to copyright law.
This practice was abandoned when MCA DiscoVision and IBM partnered up to form DiscoVision Associates in 1979. The dead sides wound up being transparent discs, allowing people to see the glue used to bond the two disc halves together. The glue had a greenish-brownish appearance, which is dubbed "green slime" by DiscoVision collectors and would often be confused for "laser rot" by those unfamiliar with the intricacies of this format.
The LaserDisc containing this program was played on a Pioneer LD-660. Audio is monaural with no CX noise reduction employed. The program did not appear to have any player control, time and frame codes in the vertical blanking and did not seem to have a data dump on the right analog audio track before the start of the program for interactive functions. The lack of disc coding and the data dump may explain why this disc half was rejected.
When played on either a Pioneer LD-660 or a Pioneer/DiscoVision PR-7820, the disc will start at the beginning and end at the physical termination of the track, barring any defects that could cause a malfunction.
This is a 1978 Chevrolet Pro Serv educational filmstrip "Just a Little Misunderstanding" with soundtrack, produced by the Sandy Corporation for the Chevrolet Motor Division of the General Motors Corporation.
This educational program details the importance of good and clear communication between customers and automobile dealer/service center employees.

Hilarious, 41 years later and nothing has changed; I face the same problems at my dealership.

Mrs. Wilson drove her Nova to the nearest Ford garage and bought the new Mustang II for 1980. "That car will never cause me any trouble. And so sporty too".

+Aaron o And then she hears that same slow clicking noise in the rear end in her Mustang II. That's the sound of her being screwed up the wazoo.

I actually uncovered the dead side contents of the single-sided "To Save A Life: Choking & CPR" Discovision release in my collection, and found it to be a GM Canada 1980 Chevy Trucks demonstration disc (complete with bilingual audio)! Of course, being originally a rejected side, the audio & video are pretty noisy, but clear up a bit about 3/4 into the side. I'm transferring it to DVD-R with my trusty 1981-vintage Pioneer LD-660 player :).

:-( I had checked your channel out hoping that you would've uploaded the footage RU-vid. Is there any chance that you could upload that video?

I used to have a DiscoVision release of The Eiger Sanction. I believe it was this release that had part of Psycho on a dead side that was stunning, except near the end of the side which had laser lock. STAY AWESOME! :)

The dead side of NHL: The 1974 Stanley Cup (MCA Discovision) contains a snippet of An American Girl: Isabelle Dances into the Spotlight (which was recently released on Blu-ray) My mom had the same problem with her Chevrolet Silverado (also manufactured by the same company) which had to do with one of the headlights

Of course, not all copies of "NHL: The 1974 Stanley Cup" from DiscoVision will have the same exact dead side as the copy you're talking about. Indeed, that's the case with dead sides (that are not green slime) on any DiscoVision title. You really don't know what you have until you actually try to play it (provided that you even can).

Funny- only time I've seen "The Choirboys" is the last side, found on the dead side of "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". Odd sides of other titles were also found on dead sides, of course the GM stuff is usually more interesting and rare. My "Three Days of the Condor" disc has a CLV test-pressing of Bullitt, which was never actually released on the DiscoVision label.

Just got the first DiscoVision US Demo disc, and this was on the dead side! Format would not play on a newer LD player, as happens with some GM discs, and sound is only in the left channel.

eyeh8nbc Same deal on my dead side; audio only on the left side.Of course, when transferring it to RU-vid, I removed the right channel and encoded the video with one channel of audio.

+eyeh8nbc And a 1978 DiscoVision demo? I'm going to watch that right now! And add a thumbs up!

The real question is: Why did she have to pay "a hefty repair charge" if she had a 1 year old car? Power train warranties were usually 5 years or more at that point in time.

Could there be other Laserdiscs containing "hidden" films like these?

I’m just wondering, would these discs work on pioneer laserdisc players like the LD-690
@Watcher3223
@Watcher3223 3 года назад
Probably not; the GM discs used MCA control coding as opposed to Philips control coding. The Pioneer LD-660 can play any LaserDisc so long as it's NTSC. It's considered a dumb player because it lacks any ability to recognize player control codes, so it doesn't matter if a disc is Philips or MCA coded. The DiscoVision/Pioneer PR-7820 is made to use MCA coding, so that's the machine these kinds of discs were made for. Virtually any other player will likely not play an MCA coded disc. What will happen is that the player will spin it up, synchronize to it, but then abort after a few moments because it couldn't read usable control information off of the disc to start playback.
