Mocking up and machining to fit, a DME FAT swing arm for the 1978 Kawasaki Z1-R project. This is not an extended swing arm, simply a widened arm, but it WON'T FIT without modifications. Machining, measuring, fixturing, side milling. Will this work?

Good job with that swing arm mods. Not easy to make them fit in place. EK chain company from Japan made nice color painted 520 chains, they have green and metallic green options. They have also special screw type link, its very easy to do ,all you needs is only 8mm wrench and pliers to do it. Color chain would be good looking with green parts.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of the color chain, but it's a 530 from 630 that is part of a kit, because of a couple reasons including what we're doing here (apparently, the #530 chain better clears a fatter tire) and that a 530 today is just as strong if not stronger, than a 630 of that era. So says the literature. I ordered a riveted master link for this 530 conversion setup and on the same order, a #630 replacement riveted master for the 630 chain to make that chain usable should the need arise in the future. I'll grind off the master I put on the 630, push it out and discard then I'll bag it up, label the # of links and move on. Thanks again.

Nothing like after-market parts for "special fitting" procedures.

Kool, but remember you can't put a wider tire in there than the chain will allow, even if you can stuff a 180 in there the chain isn't going to line up

Three comments 1 Why would anyone want to modify a beautiful original machine 2 The swing arm manufacturer is dimensionally way off 3 You have indeed ‘polished a turd’ I hope the customer appreciates your skill and diligence

Do they make a frame spreader? Would that work?

Probably. But a Z1-R frame is no bueno for doing any funky cold Medina.
