Here is a video on my 1978 Mercury Colony Park wagon. I have always liked these full sized American station wagons. Once common throughout the USA up to the 1980’s, before being replaced by the Minivan 🤮. Now these automotive pieces of Americana are highly collectible. When driving across the USA in my Colony Park I was amazed how many people came up to me to say “we used to vacation in one of these” or “I used to go to baseball practice in one of these with my Mom driving”.
I drove the Mercury from Ohio to Detroit, back to Ohio and then up to Chicago and across the USA to San Francisco. The 400 cubic inch V8 didn’t miss a beat and the car was supremely comfortable. What do you think of these woody wagons? Please Like 👍, Comment, Share and Subscribe. Thanks for watching!

A boy in my school carpool's mom drove a '72 Colony Park with the high back luxurious vinyl power front bench seats. Installed in the car (circa 1978) was a radio telephone, which I was told was used infrequently for the father's business, and was very expensive, and you had to reserve a time slot in advance to place a call!😮

My first car was 1977 Mercury Colony Park wagon with 460 Cu in. engine fully loaded. It was my fathers company car and he gifted it to me for my 17th birthday. I upgraded the stereo system and put BF Goodrich T/A radials with American Racing MAG wheels, and the MAG WAG was born. That wagon was a dream to drive with those huge Lazy Boy like seats, back and forth the three hundred mile trip from Deerfield, Illinois to La Crosse Wisconsin where I went to school. I miss the wagon so much. Too bad Ford can't bring that back with the engine technologies of today.

Thanks David. What a cool car. I had a green 460 one but sold it for this nicer one. Sadly, it only had the 400 but it still goes well. 👍

I love full-size American wagons, particularly when they display such a close affinity with nature courtesy of all that woodgrain. Great car MB and such a wonderful way to take delivery with another scenic drive across the USA, in scenes reminiscent of Clark Griswold and family. So many Americans grew up in these cars, it's no wonder they have such fond childhood memories of them. Given that obvious nostalgic appeal, it's a shame so many were driven into the ground without thought of their future collectability. You have a rare jewel there - and I'd be more than happy with a 400 Clevo under the hood!

Thanks Mark. I have always liked wagons and there is nothing more “American” than a woody wagon. It was supremely comfortable yet swallowed all the luggage with ease. The 400 is adequate but I would prefer the 460, however, as said in the video, I am very happy with this car. Appreciate your comments 👍.

This looks just like the one I drove for my dad's catering business back in the 70s. Except it had a 460. Beautiful and very comfortable. I sat in line in that gas crises too. 65 cents a gallon back then. Who knew? Great video.

You have some nice Mercury Grand Marquis cars. That was a great looking style in the late 1970's. I liked them too. You have the Colony Park wagon and drove your car car cross the United States. That is saying something to do that. I am sure you saw a lot as you drove. Now it is back in Australia. Good for you Mark. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Thanks very much. It was a great experience. I wanted to get a feel of what it would have been like to travel across America when these cars were new - on the roads they would have travelled. While some people may criticise American cars in terms of handling, you must view them in the context of their environment. That was mainly driven on local roads and freeways - and they did that job magnificently. I did 800 miles a day in this car and was always comfortable. I could step out of it at the end of the day still feeling refreshed. That is a lot to say about a 50 year old car. Agreed the 1975-78 Mercurys were very handsome looking cars (as were the earlier ones). I know some people talk about the earlier ones being better. Yes, they were heavier and had more soft feel interior trim, however, the later models drive extremely well and I would heartily recommend them to anyone who loves classic cars. They are still great value.

@@markbehr88 Well stated. I am glad to know you appreciated these cars for what they are. It was about comfort and luxury. I am impressed it did so well making the journey as well. The Australia Ford LTD used those same wheel design too. Just like Holden was using American GM parts and design and features, Ford was doing this as well. Your wagon is nicely equipped as well. I can just image the looks you got. One day they will come to appreciate these cars more than they do now.

Yes, it did a fantastic job eating up the miles, with no issues once the carb was sorted. Yes, the wheel covers on the P6 Ford LTD. The ZJ Fairlane also used a similar hub cap. Thanks for your comments.@@OLDS98

Another great video feature Mark. The 400 often cops a bad wrap but I also have a 400 in my 1979 Lincoln, and although it's not a neck-snapper in take off performance, the effortless torque makes it great to drive and feels exceptionally smooth under the right foot. At the end of the day - or at the start of the day - how far performance wise do you want to push a full size vehicle like this? I love these cars because of many factors. Mark pointed out that they didn't survive in big numbers, they were the "taken for granted" family transport back in an era where car variance & choice was in abundance in the United States. These cars were often the victims of hard times by families. But I believe it became even worse when these cars went through the "worth $400" era. Respectfully, in most cases, then those buyers were the hardest owners, didn't care, didn't service them, left them outside - list goes on - and that attributed to the demise of most I believe. That said, this condition of wagon that Mark has is almost a freak. This wagon side-stepped all of that and was protected...you can see by the video it has been looked after over time. Some dear soul appreciated this wagon. I would have liked to have installed a brand new carby on this car for Mark - instead of a rebuilt - but it did the job, and then travelled 4/5's the way across the USA without any hassle what so ever. Another awesome story. Cheers, Fletch 👍

Thanks Fletch. You were a key part of that trip in the back up Challenger. Luckily it wasn’t needed as the Colony Park was reliable for the whole trip, once the rebuilt carby was fitted. I remember how many people relayed fond family stories to us regarding their woody wagon moments.

I like how the rear is related to the Aussie Fords of the time. I like woody wagons. Really cool. This is nicely appointed. Are the headlight covers padded vinyl you can push in? Have you seen the video of the actual individual Ford LTD wagon that Michael Myers used in Halloween that's been tracked down and restored? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SOPmq0L_wes.htmlsi=jWK1kLk1rQzIT65m
