I agree that it was a wonderful time to be young. I was only 9 that year but remember following each game of that series. Golden memories they will always be.
Nicky, i also was 15 in 1978. This was my most memorable game ever a I went to school the next day so excited!!!! The New York Yankees at their best!!!!!
I remember first becoming a big mlb fan in 1978 while following the NYY. Even as a 5th grader, I knew from watching Guidry, Nettles and Gossage that this was something that was once in a lifetime. 💥🔥
William Conrad and the 1978 Yankees. A great voice for a great team. Also recommended: "It Don't Come Easy" which was shown on WPIX in NYC after the season. Parts of it are on RU-vid.
@@mariepavlov9144 Yes, he also narrated "The Fugitive," the opening credits of "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century," and in a speedy voice, "Rocky and Bullwinkle."
What a season. I was 19. First, the greatest comeback ever, the pennant and then the World Series. The amazing thing is that almost every player on both teams was a legend.
I moved up to New Haven from NY that year, and my roommate was a Sox fan. I got to see that race from both sides, getting both broadcasts on cable. Wow what a ride!!
Thank you for posting this. I watched every game of this series with my dad. I was 5 years old but I remember it like it was yesterday. I've been a Yankee fan ever since.
My baseball hero is and will always be Thurman Munson. I wanted to be just like him. Tough and clutch! RIP Thurman. It doesn't matter if you are in the HOF or not. Those who saw you play know how great you were. I know how great you were. That's all that matters.
The "Bionic" Tommy John. "Houdini couldn't have done it better" (announcer describing 3rd baseman Graig Nettles, I love how the announcers make the game sound so dramatic.
yep, goose broke his thumb and things were bad even before thurman was killed i was at the game after he died and it was so sad, people were in tears, once the captain passed so did the season.
Figurora and Hunter forgot how to pitch. Gossage getting hurt...nailed the coffin. Jackson got hurt...Munson's accident . Then they traded Rivers. But still won 89 games which is amazing after all that. 7th best record in baseball.........
+Deneen Jeffries I can remember exactly where i was standing when Dent hit THE Home Run! 14 games behind Boston in july, and the comeback began!! Nettles was my baseball Idol,I played 3rd base ,wore #9,and tried to play just like him!!!LOL. This W.S. was my fav. of all.The 1978 Yankees are my favorite Yankee team to this Day.
Baseball fans of a certain age (born in the 1970s or older) will remember these highlight films that their local team affiliates would show during rain delays or if that day's game ended early. The two most memorable moments from this series were the Game #2 Reggie Jackson vs. Bob Welsh showdown and the controversial play in Game #4. MLB Films must have learned from NFL Films how invaluable the mic'd up coaches and players were for these productions. Tommy Lasorda, arguing with the umpires after that crazy Game #4 play, was entertaining as could be. I also liked the late Dick Howser, in Game #5, telling Brian Doyle after his overly-aggressive slide/dive into 3rd base "It wasn't really that close, you could have come in the other way...."
The Dodgers played well......The Yanks.......just had a certain something....Dent,Doyle, Beattie....average players who played way over their heads... Nettles made un-human plays........I like Lasorda....glad he won in 1981 even though I like the Yanks........How Jackson got away with the Sacrifice Hip..............
Still hard to believe Thurman would die in a few months, so it's great to see them win for him. I rode my new bike to get a newspaper the day after the plane crash, and some one stole my bike(I had just been unjustly been fired). We had to move, then my girl dumped me. Not a good year! Miss you Thurman!
I heard the ump say he didn't do it intentionally. the ball deflecting off Reggie's leg was a definite change in the course of that game, and the world series that year!
Reggie Vs Welch in game two one of the great duels of all time. I'm 63 (24 when the series took place) and I remember it very clearly. Jackson was super upset because the runner was taking off on the pitch and it was a known fact that when guys ran when he was swinging, distracted the shit out of The Reg. Might not have made any difference but you never know.
Watch when Reggie strikes out, he looks like he’s in shock he didn’t come thru, because like no one else in October almost always did. Mr. Welch(rip)game 6 sir.
The interference was obvious, but of course, that should never have happened because Joe Brinkman, the second base umpire, should have ruled the play dead when Bill Russell intentionally dropped the ball on that soft line drive that Lou Piniella hit. Had Brinkman made the correct call there, then Piniella would have been called out and both Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson would have returned to the bases they occupied, and there would have been 2 outs with the score 3-1. Then after Brinkman blew the call on Russell's intentional drop, Russell made the next miscue on that play by not tagging Munson and stepping on second, which would have resulted in an inning-ending DP. Then unbelievably, they came within a hair of resuming the game after the argument without the correct number of outs, because the still had just one out posted, when there were two. First base umpire Frank Pulli finally straightened that out, then action was restarted.
Reggie's was a "Head Smart Play" by a World Champion Veteran - Could not happen to a better Manager Lasorda is the MOST overrated baseball guy of all time!
@@brandonmorris92 : Exactly. In fact, I still get emotional when Munson comes to mind. I was 14 years old when he died. I think the Yankees had just finished a series against Chicago, if memory serves me right.
Wrong The Orioles jumped out to an early lead and The Yankees seemed to get old. Catfish's arm gave out. Injuries returned Jackson actually had a great year he hit over 300 only time in his career Figuroa Lyle where traded White wasn't resigned Steinbrenner began his reign of error and terror bringing back Martin highlight of year was Murcer's return
Nettles should got MVP ask the Dodgers That flag would be in LA if not for him How about a plague for him everyone else gets one for much less No respect
To me Nettles is the Yankees all time greatest 3rd baseman. Made the diving stab routine won more games with his glove than ARod ever did with his bat.
Nettles' mitt was a huge factor this series, no question about that! Dent, though, batted .417 with 10 hits and 7 RBI while Nettles hit .160 with one RBI.
@@bowlersinger If you watched the series I’m sure you would agree if the Yanks didn’t win game 3 they would have lost the series If you read or heard Dodger quotes after the series they always said game 3 was the turning point Nettles saved 7 runs with his glove that game Love Dent he was a rock at short made all the plays and had a great WS but If not for Nettles that banner would be in LA Almost 45 years what do most people remember about that series ? Dent or Nettles ?
@@anthonyminor3160 NO KIDDING! The Dodgers went into New York up 2-0 in the Series, and quite possibly could have gone up 3-0 the night before had it not been for The Grand Larceny of Graig Nettles’ Glove. Going to the Bottom of the 6th, the Dodgers was up 3-1 in the game. The Yankees had Munson on Second and Jackson on First with One Out when Pinella hit a Line Drive dropped by Russell, he stepped on Second to force Jackson and then threw the ball to Garvey which was inferred by Jackson still sitting at First.
