A tension packed thriller. Great bowling by Hendricks and a wonderfully controlled innings by the Pakistan captain Asif Iqbal. This was cricket now it has transformed in to Baseball
Full of Tension, intense one-dayers used to be. Those days cricket was really intriguing. What a joy was to watch those matches. These days mostly slogging like baseball.
The best thing about packer was it gave us a chance to see R.W Taylor master glove man ,how does he make it look so easy and again in 1981 Botham ashes when he was 40 years old
Brearley used Boycott as bowler because, according to his excellent book Art of Captaincy', he (Boycott) used to be a very useful bowler in the Sunday League competition and, in humid conditions, could swing the ball as much as anyone. In a Sunday league game just a few weeks before he had bowling figures of 2-5 off 4 overs!!
Boycott was taken apart by Viv Richards when bowling in the final at lord's. The great player's Will always be great no matter what form of match it is or which country they are playing in. Viv Richards was without doubt the greatest the world will ever see.
Just 165 off 60 overs! So different to modern ODI's, but it was more enjoyable to watch because the bowlers were in the game (not just cannon fodder) and the batsmen played proper strokes!
Both sides got their overs in quickly too. Pakistan bowled at just over 16 overs per hour (possibly helped by Majid's overs). England bowled at 15.5 overs per hour (despite Willis's long run up) Compare that with today's sides.
@@hidayat77705 The 1979 World cup lasted all of 2 weeks too!! 3 pool games - a semi final then final. Compare to this World Cup - lasting 6 weeks and three days!!
@@IronMan-ho7vt On a overcast day seamers pitch with good seam bowling 1979 maybe it was acceptable very exciting game I wish more games were like that today.
This match is etched in my memory. Hendricks magical first spell was one of the finest in the world cup. Asif Iqbal- Captain valiant, scored a wonderful half century. Pakistan panicked and lost the match.
Don't forget Imran khan. He was batting superbly at that time in the tail end. Indeed he was a most talented cricketer but was neglected in early days.
A few months later this Pak side was to visit India. Turned out to be Asif Iqbal's final series. Also Majid and Sadiq rarely opened together after that series. The brilliant performance from Pakistan came from Wasim Raja who virtually played a lone hand. At times supported by Miandad.
@@geoffreyking4515 True. Bob was a great wicketkeeper. He was just unlucky to have Alan Knott ahead of him, Knotty was by far the best pure wicket keeper ever to play the game.
@@geoffreyking4515 May be true, don't know. Knotty was a special character, hardly dropped a catch or gave byes. He was a fixture in 1970's England side (called MCC in those days) a real fisty player with the bat.
@@boymeetsbush8232 both keepers were a pleasure to talk with, notty said "I don't know how bob did it up there with an unfashionable county ,amazing pair of hands has my mate bob ""
Pakistan is always great in cricket, no team coming to Pakistan for playing since 11 years & Pakistan still on mouth of semi wc19 even others fix matches just only Pakistan out from the wc19. I salute pakistan cricket.
that mean you are always on mercy of other teams to move forward. it is pathetic, you play poor cricket and blame whole world for downfall. Bhikh bhi mangni hai woh bhi dadagiri kar ke.

Yes, the match never felt like a 1 day game. The run rate was only 2.7 throughout the whole day - slower than most days of modern test cricket!! yet it was absorbing to watch (I'm sure equally as exciting to watch it live). The over rates are what struck me most. Pakistan bowled at 16 overs per hour and England just over 15.5 overs per hour.
Pakistan had a disciplined, well integrated, talented team in 1979, a far cry from today! India were the underdogs then. Who would have guessed that India would be winning the world cup in 1983!
Brearley was out for a duck in this encounter against Pakistan and Randall was out for one. There was also a time when Richie Benaud mentioned about travesty for Randall when the Poms played the Aussies back in 1977 and Marsh said "I've thwarted Randall this time my friend" to a teammate.
I was actually there in June 79(! .. not 83!!) and what a superb atmosphere marred a few times by a little ridiculous trouble on the terraces between the morons on both sides.. police dogs were called in and we had the inevitable invasion by the Pakistanis which was common in the 70s and 80s( Thank god security is better ).. back to the match , as an england fan , I thought we were dead and buried .. Bob Taylor played a vital role with bat and glove but Hendrick was sensational.. his best spell ever in an england shirt . By the time Zaheer was out and they were six down I had to down a pint fast to believe this was happening . And Boycott as a bowler . In truth Pakistan should have won when Imran Khan was playing sensibly keeping sikhander Bakht off strike with a few runs to get BUT a rush of blood, a catch by Hendrick off Boycott !, I recall Imran being utterly furious with Bakht who cost them the game, If england had lost I don’t think they would have made the final Still a great CWC memory
I remember i read in pakistani cricket magazine “Akhbar-e-Watan”,Sikander Bakht quoted that Imran Khan was confident to get remaining runs and he again and again asked Sikander Bakht not to play big shot and just rotate the strike. But Sikander played a silly shot and got.He wrote اف خان صاحب کا چہرہ۔۔ that Imran Khan’s face was red with anger.Sikander after getting out ran to dressing room and tried his best to avoid Imran Khan who was furious over his silly shot.
Wow Javed Miandad certainly experienced the highs and lows of home town umpires over his career. No way that was lbw. Some very open batting stances. Especially amongst the Pakistanis
look at the pak batting line. wasim raja coming at number 8 and imran khan coming at 9. still not able to chase 165. And that was the time almost every cricketer was playing country cricket regularly. Certainly pakistani team is the most un predicted side from day 1. When they are favorites they usually lose and when they are considered under dogs, they surprise every one by defeating any team any time.
Seems to me that they cannot perform when the expectations are high, but when the pressure is off , they play more freely with nothing to lose attitude, and that is when they play their best. Champions are able to play at the highest level even when the expectations are high. Draw your own conclusions...
Yes, in this world cup Pakistan was a tough competitor. All guys were experienced and mature and team was capable to win the tournament. The teams of England and Austrailia were no match; and they were strong in bowling and batting.
Willis, Gooch, Gower, Boycott, Taylor and Hendrick were all better than their opposite numbers and the England squad was superior to Pakistan who leaned on Asif, Imran and Zaheer
this is very strong english team. pakistan too. Majid, Zaheer, Asi Iqbal, the retired Mustaq Mohammed all are English County cpatains. Mike Hendrik was good bowler with very nice action but he could not shine much later. Dilley and Foster came in and they too were good bowler.
Okay someone tell me if I’m imagining this or it’s true: the boundary line appears to be far away from the pitch - folks were able to easily run four runs while fielders gave the ball a long chase. Nowadays the boundary appears to be so short. Isn’t there a uniform rule in cricket that the boundary has to be a certain distance from the pitch?
Well, this was not Imran Khan's peak. Khan's peak as a fast bowler was between 1981 to early 1983, before he developed a stress fracture in his shin which kept him away from bowling for 2 years!!
I can see myself in the crowd at 20:37. There was lots of trouble at the game. The Pakistani fans in front of us wouldnt sit down and eventually had things pelted at them. The police had to intervene.
England had prepared an extremely seaming wicket for their home conditions. 4 times out of 5 in more normal conditions this 1979 Pakistan team would have been beaten England. In the first ever ODI in 1974 Oakistsn thrashed England with Majid Khan spanking 109 with century in 88 balls. England got very lucky in 1979.
But it was Sikander Bakht who played that terrible shot when he was required to just to stay there. Asif Iqbal's sensible innings had put Pakistan back in the match and Imran batting with a cool head would have easily scored the 15 runs required in 4 overs and out of which 3 overs were to be bowled by non-regular bowlers
Who else thought Bob Willis the more deserving of the Man of the Match award? 24 runs (sharing a 43 run stand with Bob Taylor) and then 1-37 off his 11 overs (removing the dangerous Asif Iqbal). He was probably more reason why England won the game rather than lost it!!
165 would still be not enough if Hendricks had not bowl that well Early in the innings. You cannot defend 165 in 60 overs those days as well despite taking wickets regularly. But yes England came back in the game with Willis's innings and wicket
The pakistan team is a very good spearheaded by Imran, Sarfraz, Sikandar Bakth and top class batsman Zaheer, Majid, Asif , Mustaq, Wasim raja. But Hendricks did the magic. Hendricks got very nice action with high arm. Some how with a such talent this tall english bowler could not shine. Zaheer played without specs on his eyes .But it looks like a classy test match than one day international.
Upto that point the saddest day of my life. I could not believe that Pakistan side lost to that England side at that particular time. I am saying that because zaheer, Majid, and asif Iqbal, were still at their best. considering Imran came into bat at no 9 and they failed to get 165 runs for victory . Highly unbelievable.
The stupid short by Sikander Bakht was the reason Pakistan lost. Only 14 runs were required in 4 overs and instead of defending he played an atrocious stroke
In 1979 Imran was a bits and pieces cricketer he wasn't a genuine allrounder that he later became. Zahir, Majid and Asif Iqbal were a bigger name than Imran in those days. Wasim Raja, Javed Miandad and Haroon Rashid were upcoming talent. Overall a good Pak team.
Pakistan had to win this game in order to avoid West Indies in semi final.as in case of defeat they had to play against mighty West Indies in semi final and in case of victory they had to play against New Zealand which was relatively easier side.Pakistan lost semi final against West indies.
