After enjoying black coffee at work for over 30 years, and after watching you, I now have instant nescafe and swiss miss for moca-chino every... darn... day. Thank you!
Hey Maik! Looks like I broke a 30 year tradition - hope it was a worth it change! By the way, your P-38 keychain holder came in handy the other day. Was visiting family and we needed to open a can of cranberry sauce. No can opener in the house. So I busted out the trusty P-38. Thanks again for that man. Love that P-38 holder
I have steered clear of instant for the past 20 years, but after seeing the Tasters Choice in so many of the MREs I decided I would try it just to put some back for those mornings when I ran out of my regular stuff... And I actually drink it more often than regular drip!
Haha, I only used to drink instant in the field, but I have to admit that watching MRE reviews have made me into an - coffee, instant - slurping viewer as well ( on average, some 2 Liters a day ). Funny thing is that the army-mocha beverage thing was tought to me by my late Mother. Thinking Her parents most likely got into contact with scho-ka-kola back in WWII ( got a nice stash of that too :-)
Großer Maik : I gave up on making coffee except for boiling water a few years ago. Kroger sells Organic instant coffee and I throw in International Foods Mocha, extra sugar, real half-and-half, and I have fancy coffee for .75. And it's HOT.
Everyone eats so you have the food element. Also not being interested in the military would actually be a reason to watch this because your lack of knowledge would spark your curiosity even more. There's also intrigue and suspense with a touch of danger due to the age of the meals he eats. Any good movie also has these attributes. Veterans watch this for nostalgia, I know because I am one.
My wife sticks her head through the doorway into my office, "Honey, dinner is ready!" "OK, I'll be there in a second." She notices the slightly glazed look on my face as I sit down at the table, "So what have you been doing for the past 4 hours?" "Oh, just watching a guy eat old military food; MREs." There's no hint of apology in my voice. "Really? Uhmm...ok...really, 4 hours? Anyway, dinner's ready." I replace the beautiful china dish my wife has provided with a military compartmentalized tray. "I see that...let's get this out on a tray...NICE!" Each entre is placed in a compartment as I pour boiling water from my canteen-cup into a glass with freeze dried coffee. "Huh?" She looks at me with doubting eyes and moves her chair away from me slightly. "So what do you think of my biscuits? It's a new recipe!" I notice the pride in her voice, but I can't help myself. "They're a little thirst provoking!" Life with Steve1989Info.....Thanks Steve!
My dad ate the chicken and rice LRP all the time. The tape on the bottom of the main course bags are to seal the bag shut when they cook and also said you should fill the bag up halfway with those old lrps. They used to tuck them under their arms and they'd be cooked/ warmed by the time they got where they were going. He said the 1962 version was the best. Keep up the great work, Steve!
3:05 a mist like orb appears and floats upwards... Its not the first time I've seen or mentioned them on these vids. These rations hold energy dude, preetttyy awesome.
I seen that too! Just appeared out of nowhere. Had to replay it a few times and showed the part to my wife. She said the orb was like, hey man give me back my food lol. I definitely agree with you, these old rations have energies attached to them
Steve, I was in the National Park Service Youth Conservation Corps in the late 70s during the summer when I was in high school. It was in the desert outside of Las Vegas. My favorite part was when we were the field all day, we would get MREs. I loved them. I remember everybody complaining about them but they were great.
My girlfriend and I watch your videos together and we love them. You always make us laugh and keep us entertained. We're waiting till we have some extra money and we're gonna order some to try ourselves. So thank you man and keep the vids coming 👍🏻👍🏻
Steve you are awesome I have fallen in love your videos please keep up the good work I love the history of how our heroes had to survive also want to thank you for your service
Steve, your MRE vids are absolutely incredible. Hollywood needs to do a cable tv show on you and I really mean it. Lee Ermey (Full Metal Jacket) used to do a cable tv show about military tech back in the early 2000s, so why not you? There are other MRE reviewers such as, KiwiDude and Gundog who post excellent MRE reviews yet I think over time you have become the most popular. Yet I am thrilled that you guys collaborate, sending MRE samples to one another, building an MRE community. But do you remember the dude that pioneered the RU-vid MRE review series? You guys were not the first to start a series of MRE review episodes. Back in the early 2000s it was a young guy in Yokota (Tokyo), Japan, going under the moniker, mrejap, that started it all. He found a way to purchase samples of MREs from all over the world including the former Warsaw Pact. Everyone loved his Asian-accented English but I think he did not know that and may have thought people were making fun of him. He videotaped his MRE reviews like all of you, point-of-view. He did include an odd twist, never copied elsewhere. He liked to collect plastic replica weapons and fiddle with them during his MRE reviews. He started collecting a huge audience and everyone loved him as much as we all love your MRE reviews now. Some viewers started nicknaming him, "Kato". I don't think he knew that, 'mrejap', was politically incorrect. Like you, Kato was willing to sample very old MRE foodstuffs. Of course he avoided spoiled ones. Once he paid for a box of East German, 24-hour MRE. It turned out to be nothing more than an assortment of canned foods that an East German soldier would have to lug around with him. And most of the cans were bulging, leaking, or burst long ago. Still it was educational, like your vids. Suddenly, mrejap just went off the air. He went dark. All of his MRE videos disappeared off RU-vid. To this day, no one knows what happened to him. But MRE fans will always remember mrejap as the pioneer of the RU-vid MRE review videos. True, other MRE vids existed at the time but those were one-off vids. No one but mrejap had a series of MRE videos like you guys today.
Much respect to you Grande Artiste. You know of Kato. Only a few of the folks here do. I spoke with him once on MREinfo years back (his screen name was actually Kato). I have a good friend in Japan who used to be buddies with him. I completely understand why mrejap deleted all his videos and went AWOL. If I could write a book.. people would understand a little better as to what is truly involved in this field. Things I cannot really talk about now. And I know Kato went through many of those very same things years back. He still loves his airsoft - it's much lower stress for him. He keeps out of the spotlight.. and as for the overall lack of respect he received in the spotlight.. I would have done the very same. He spent thousands of dollars and traveled for his rations. A true reviewer. Your comments though Grande Artiste - are truly some of my favorites out there. Thank you for your input and perspective on these videos and body of work as a whole.
I would absolutely love to read a book written by your magnificent self! Especially if it contained things which you cannot talk about here. My curiosity is torturing me, mate.
Steve, are you able to tell us what actually happened to Kato? I hope Kato did not misunderstand his many fans on RU-vid. I don't recall any negative or hate comments on his videos. True, there were comments about his accent but I perceived they were light-hearted from fans who actually liked him. It was hard not to giggle sometimes, like when he pronounced, peanut butter as, penis butter, or better yet, when he came up with his own unique English nomenclature, like, 'nightmare taste'. We all loved Kato just the same. If anyone can still get ahold of Kato, please tell him he has thousands of fans who still remember him and wish he would come back. In the meantime, Steve, you have been more than a worthy successor. I will shout out credit to your contemporaries who also posted well-done mre vids, guys like, KiwiDude (seems to have faded out), GunDog, and Nathan, the major players in the RU-vid international MRE community. Over time, it appears you have become the most renown of the MRE experts. Myself, I've collected books on American military rations dating back to the Revolutionary War. That would make for a great historical MRE series. Much of the food would have to be just discussed or else reproduced for viewers to see.
11:10 I say that every single time I see you put a plastic spoon into hot coffee instant, or you use a plastic spoon to eat just cooked meals. I've been waiting to hear you say that for so long now. It means so much to me that you've said that.
*Steve Walking up to his house* Steve's neighbor - "Hey did you hear!? It's nuclear war! Nukes are on their way here now!!" *Steve clicks a button on his keyring, a small bunker slides open in his garage, packed with MRE'S from 1945-2017. Steve cracks a small smile and turns to his neighbor.* Steve - ".................nice :)"
Thank you Steve for bringing us all this historical info. I love to see your new and old content. I have so many videos to see still. I appreciate all the time and effort you have invested. Congrats on over 450k subs.
I remember back when I had debilitating stomach problems that kept me in and out of hospitals. Wasn't able to eat, and lost 70lbs [went from 200lbs at 6'1" down to 130lbs]. Started watching these in late 2015 back when Steve had only a handful of subs. It was oddly calming and his in-depth descriptions made it feel like I was eating these. The LRPs and RCWs were probably some of my favorite to watch, and C-Rats & MCIs being the next best- at least they were entertaining even if not edible [the smokes were super satisfying to watch, and I wished I could have tried one of them!]. Doing better now, and up to 170lbs. I still love watching these, even if I've already watched them all a dozen times. Everytime I make a new account this is the first channel I sub to.
Hey Steve! Hope all is well down there in Florida. Just wanted to let you know me and my sister have been watching your videos for over a year and half now and we absolutely love them. I'm so glad to see all these uploads. Would you ever consider doing a Q&A video? It would be a great way to hear about some of your best and worst ration stories. Anyway have a great night!
Hey Owen. Thanks so much man. All is well down here. So glad you and your sister like the videos! I am glad to have more videos out lately. Planning on doing a Q & A pretty soon. It's just something that I need to really be in the mood to do. The more the folks want me to do a Q & A, the more apt I am for actually following through and doing it. Hope you have a great night too! Take care.
Live Stream would be great. BTW, I know what that cookie is like, I had a few in the 80's (as a kid) lots of my family were in the military during NAM, when they went state side they kept a bunch of those meals. I really forgot about them till you talked about the chemical taste, talk about a strange flashback...
I've been watching you for a few months, and I have to say you are one of the best wholesome channels I've found since the beginning of RU-vid. I've even got some coworkers to start watching you after hearing me watch you during my lunch break. Keep it up! And take care of yourself with those old MRE's!
Steve keeps getting more and more muscular, you can tell just by his hands and arms over the course of all his vids. (also best RU-vidr of his kind, nobody does it better)
nice, was stored in a perfect location. It is always nice to see a ration this old that is still completely edible and not only that pretty darn good too. Thanks for the review.
I love these consistent uploads recently used to seem like a month between uploads. Even then it was still alright though. Love these vids they make my day. Good job Steve
"That slight chemical sting to the tongue, you get used to it." Nice! Also your videos always make me want to eat a bunch of chocolate for some reason. Keep it up!
I honestly don't know why I enjoy your videos so much. Just really cool to see some of these old rations I'll probably never have a chance to mess with. I've always been considered a weirdo for actually enjoying MRE's, lol. Thanks for another great vid man!
Chicken and Rice? More like: Chicken and Nice. Am i the only one who, when hearing him say: "it smells and tastes perfectly fine", is secretly waiting for this to appear in the comments, or descripton?: "UPDATE: It wasn't perfectly fine....I've pooped.....a lot"
I found your channel a month ago just being bored on RU-vid. And it turns out I love MRE reviews and your my favorite person that does it (: I binged at least 20 videos in a row 😅
Hey Perktube! This style LRP was first produced by Seal Bag Co Rochester N.Y. in the mid 70s. The LRP was first made in 1964 and was in a neat canvas pouch. Planning to review one of those soon
I look forward to his videos. It makes my day after a long night at work to see a new video. Thank you so much for the awesome and informative videos. Keep up the awesome work.
You know ... I´m not an army guy, I don´t care much for "food rations" but for some reason I come back to this channel again and again. I like to see how the stuff is packaged and how it may have hold up but I really think that a huge part is the personality of steve ... he seems like a genuinly nice and humble guy - astonishing, really.
We used to buy these as surplus when I was in high school (early 80's). TBH we never found these to be worth the effort in the woods. There wasn't enough food to fill you up. We much preferred the surplus C rations.
That "weird old fudge bar" is nearly 40 years old. I'm stunned it hasn't liquified or otherwise decomposed into a vomit-inducing mush. I reckon the much older meals were packed with less of a focus on the cost of packaging. Three years guaranteed shelf life under most conditions translated to a decade or more- in this case 38 years.
Fantastic Steve, Love the videos. You have no fear, and the older the ration is, the better in My opinion. To finish one off savoring some coffee instant and a satisfying combat smoke is the Best ! Keep them coming !
Was thinking about binge watching ur videos again but this showed up love the videos big fan and have you ever thought of merchandise like a shirt saying "nice" but anyways have a good day steve
Hey Warren! Perfect timing then, huh? Thanks man, I appreciate it! I am working on shirts right now - they will be ready for pre-order very soon. Aiming for less than 2 weeks from now. Hope you have a great day Warren - take care & see ya around
Here's the thing I love about Steve1989, he delivers on his promises. What I want: a wholesome, entertaining, and factual MRE review. What I get: Exactly what I want. Thanks, Steve.
Dude can you imagine if steve had to go to the hospital from these things? "So what seems to be the problem?" "Well I eat 50 year old food for a living and just hope for the best. Nice."
I always wondered how all this food is still “good” after all this time. Is it because it’s packaged so well or is it because it’s packed with chemicals to preserve it longer?
Let's get this out on a tray, OK, NICE! Classic RU-vid line. Love watching these unique videos of yours. Can you do more rations from Spain, maybe Navy or Air Force? Keep up the awesome work.
I ate tons of these things back in the early 80s. We like to get MCIs and pick through them and put the cans in GI socks and tie them to our rucks and packed the LRRP rations in our cargo pockets(just the mains) and off we disappear into the boonies. Loved the spaghetti it was pretty good.
We are actually extravagant in our toilet paper use because we are rich.. Carry a little to stay ahead in case and get the little resupply along the way...
