For those who are confused: The Ford 400M engine is basically a 351 Cleveland that was casted with a taller block-deck height of 10.297 inches compared to the 351C's 9.206 inches. Ford put them in trucks and full size cars as a replacement for the 460 in the late '70s. The Chevy 400 is a siamesed-cylinder small block based on the medium journal 350. They were made in the 1970's.
i like how you guys wheel, one truck plays while the other truck hangs out in case the first truck gets stuck, course, if the other truck gets stuck while comin to the rescue your in for a long day lol, thank god for good buddies that will come out and pull you out for a tank of fuel or a case of beer lol. way too many times do i get that phone call lol!! good lookin, runnin, soundin, muddin ol ford pickup!!!!
NIIIICEEE.. hell id say keep the 400 it seems to do the job, lockers is all that would be needed unless u already have them...460 would bring wonders for that truck thoguh..keep makin more vids!
@54lariat - you are correct. i don't know why people get so bent out of shape over a simple thing like calling it a 400 vs 400m. I know what you mean on the lottery thing i'd love to fully restore mine. they're great trucks.
@rider660r - yeah its still runnin. it had a shitty edelbrock pro flo on it in this vid, now has the stock air cleaner. running it to the glovebox isn't really necessary as long as you seal up the engine compartment with some splash shields. havn't had any problems since. engine compartment stays nice and clean now.
they rub on the radius arms on mine but you just gotta pay attention to it and not turn all the way. you could get offset rims or wheel spacers to help.
@6detroitdiesel5 - if the majority of trucks being run have a chevy 400 then they are probably chevys. not many people take the time to put chevy motors in fords. 351m has a different crank not cam, thats what makes the shorter stroke.
i have just recently built a 400 myself. it runs close to 375 hp and 475 flbs. pretty damn good for an old pup. mines a 77 ford. damn good trucks with under estimated motors, do a little work and there powerhouses. have the longest stroke in ford motors if im correct, make alota torque. nice truck too by the way
@jeremiah0bobbiejo 400m is a 351 cleveland with a taller deck height, and larger bearings. 351m is a destroked 400m. All 3 belong to the 335 engine family. The 390 is an FE block.
Im glad people actually know what they're talkin about in their comments on this video. It bugs the livin crap out of me when I see people argue about whats best; Ford, chevy, or dodge, then they cant back their shit talkin up. I personally, dont care what name made the truck. I have my likes and dislikes for all of them. My experiances with my 86' ford (with a 351 Winsdor), is that Ford has the best frame there ever was made on any truck. Fords frame is un beatable. But then, a 350 in a chevy..
@jeremiah0bobbiejo not entirely different than the 351c. uses the same heads, cam, ignition, oiling system. its a tall deck cleavland block with a big block bellhousing pattern and larger main bearing journals.
@1969fordtruck - actually they work better at high rpms the tire speed cleans the mud out of the lugs, if your just creepin they slick up and dont dig very well.
No, they are designed to be brought down to 15-20 psi so the outer knobs of the tires dig deep. I crawled up a steep hill in the pouring rain. It was awesome. Cheers
Me and you needa meet up in the mud one day I just got another Ford pick up. It is a 1979 Ford F-150 Ranger Lariat 4x4. It has a 7in lift with 38in Swampers. It has the 351 Cleveland. Modified to the 408 with a c6 trans and 4:11 gears front and rear. I know some spots up here we can hit.
A 400m is not a 351 cleveland or a 390 modified. 351m and 400m are in their own engine family. In my opinion two of the best engines Ford built. Parts are hard to find but they go like hell! Alot cheaper than you can buy any stroker kit, but probably not as powerful. If its a blue oval they are all good!!!
@acman1998 - nice. i wanted to rebuild this one but probably just gonna have the heads redone to get me by, and build a 460 when i get some money. how much $ for the flat top pistons that went in?
@1979Redneck1 you were pretty close. the 400 was offered in cars from 71 to 79? and offered in trucks from 77 to 82. the 351m was offered in cars from 75 to 79? and for trucks from 77 to 82. but yeah, definitely a ford motor. 400's are kick ass
I delleted some of the post i put on here just to clear up your comment board some .... obviously we will just hafta agree to disagree on this ... like i said before if it works for you then keep doing it ... and again nice truck .... take care F or O ff R oad D riving
@bigblockford557 - holy man. you got lots to say. i got no complaints with my 400 its taken a beating so far. and trust me my 400 would eat the ass off a stock 460. relax guy.
@6detroitdiesel5 it's the same long block but internally its made of junk parts and i cant think of anyone i know that would run one compared to a ford's 400. The 351M is a, "what did we build this motor for?" type of thing. it's not a "destroked" 400. It is it's own motor, but in my opinion it's just a crummy build.
ive ot a 79 bronco with a stock 400m thats about 6 degrees to advanced in timeing, and it will spin my 33s all day long in the mud, and i get about 16mpg when i play nice on the throttle!
hey on this did the body lift cause any problems? body lifts are always a hassle for me, stretching things that dont need to be stretched and just throwing everything out of whack? is a BL worth it?
@6detroitdiesel5 - im confused. sounds like your trying to say that the motor in my truck is a chevy 400, which is not the case. i dont care about nascar.
1984 351W bored .60 over with an aluminum dual plane intake and 4 barrel carburetor, headers, with 2000 miles on it since rebuild. in a 1984 F250 1985 350 chevy with a 4 barrel carburator and 40000 miles since rebuild. in a 1985 K-5 blazer which motor has more torque/HP?
@1969fordtruck not really in 1946 dodge came out with the dodge power wagon witch only had a 6 cyl engine and went less then 45 due to 5.83 to 1 gearing it came stock with a 10 thousand pound pto winch they are the ones who "wrote the book on 4x4" it actualy was the first civialian 4x4
Is it still running?Keep sucking water it wont for long.Deff need to dump a open element air cleaner or even a stock 1 and build 1 that is sealed and run into the glovebox area if you'll be doing this. It's easy but 98% of ppl don't do it.
Hmmm debatable.. I have a 79 250 and the "m" class pretty much needs intake carb and dual exhaust. cam doesnt hurt either. now you take an m class and put the cleveland timing set in it and it will tach! Decent ignition helps these as well, the old duraspark ignitions suck!
