1979: Game winning drive against Indiana

This is a home movie version from the press box of the final drive of the 1979 Indiana game where Anthony Carter caught the game winner from John Wangler. The picture quality is medicore, it's chopped up pretty bad but this is still classic footage from one of the most classic finishes in Michigan football history.

I was there. On the pressbox side, 20 yd line. Watching this again just brought tears to my eyes as I will never forget the "out of body" experience I had that day as 12-year old boy alongside my Pappy, a proud UM Law School Graduate and someone that insisted I respect the Maize and Blue. Oh, and that I did. Thank you, Mark Harold Turpen for making this digital replay so incredibly emotional for me.

You get excited winning a game by cheating? Michigan fumbled the ball out of bounds on purpose to stop the clock, allowing 1 more play. This SEC fan remembers that game.

I was a sophomore student at the time and we were sitting in the North end zone. Honestly nobody saw this coming so when it happened it was the most amazing feeling We all ran down on the field and just soaked it in Hearing Ufers call later just put the icing on the cake. The most under appreciated part of this drive? Tied game, 4th and 1 on your own 29 yard line with less than 1 minute remaining and Bo goes for it in the face of a certain loss if they didn't make it. This guts and confidence permeated the Michigan program for 21 years. Thanks Bo.

I'm a diehard Buckeye fan, Northwest Ohio born and raised, BUT, mom always had the kitchen radio tuned to WJR when I was a kid. She was a college football fan and WJR was the station that tuned in best. I'll NEVER forget Bob Ufer or his horn! He was a proud fan of his Maize n Blue and wasn't afraid to show it. That's ok in my book. Unfortunately, we'll probably never see or hear another play by play announcer like him. Since I was born in September 1968, there has to be a law somewhere that requires me to be a Tiger fan and I used to fall asleep listening to Earnie n Paul on my bedroom radio. My favorite Harwell saying to this day is "He stood there like a house by the side of the road and watched that one go by! Ahhhh... to be young and carefree again lol!

I was a freshman in 1979, so my season tickets were in the north end zone (section 33). I remember seeing Lawrence Reid throwing the ball out of bounds right at Lee Corso to stop the clock on the second-to-last play. Lee was literally hopping mad on the sideline. I remember it seemed like the entire stadium was streaming to Anthony Carter in the south end zone after he scored. AC was an absolutely electric player. You felt like a touchdown was a real possibility every time he touched the ball

I’ve only been to 4 Michigan football games in my 66 years on this planet. Wake Forest, 2 ohio state games (one was watching archie griffin get shut down big time) and this one. I had, what I thought through 99% of the game, terrible seats. Low, 8 rows up, and in the end zone. But that last 1% of the game was assume. We had no choice witch direction to go. It was either down to the field or get trampled. We stayed on the field for almost an hour, no one wanted to leave. One of life’s “ I’ll never for get this” moments. And, no, in Michigan, the word ohio or any player name there of is ever capitalized!

I sat in an end zone seat on the side of the field where Carter scored. It was the most amazing touchdown I personally witnessed, partly because the clock had already run out before Carter scored. It's possible that the rule has changed since this game was played in 1979. But on page 103 in the current rulebook under Section 2, Article 1, it says, "a player may hand or pass the ball backward at any time except to intentionally throw the ball out of bounds to conserve time." The penalty for doing so is 5 yards and loss of down if by Team A before team possession changes during a scrimmage play. It was 3rd down when LT Reed deliberately threw the ball out of bounds to stop the clock with six seconds remaining. Such penalties against the offense in the last two minutes of a quarter usually also come with a 10-second run-off on the game clock, which means the game would have ended after the play to Reid and this historic play would not have happened. The game would have ended in a 21-21 tie. As much of a fan of Michigan football as I am....and I'm over the top....Corso likely had a legitimate gripe. Sill...Ufer's call of the play is priceless.
