Actually, the description says the engine is a 6V71TA but you did get the transmission right.
@TheCRTman
@TheCRTman 9 лет назад
ClassicTVMan1981X Oh whoops. What does aftercooling do anyway? I thought it said 6V71T.
@ClassicTVMan1981X
@ClassicTVMan1981X 9 лет назад
TheCRTman How does it work? Also known as intercooling, it cools the air generated by the turbo, reducing its temperature and increases the density of the air, helping improve combustion and allowing more fuel to be burned. Reliability is also increased as it provides a more consistent temperature of intake air to the engine which allows the air/fuel ratio of the engine to remain at a safe level.
@TheCRTman

ClassicTVMan1981X Now that's cool.

This takes me back. Shreveport, LA (SPORTRAN) had 7 1980 models. They were retired in 1996 for 35ft Orion Vs. They are about to retire this year as well. All my city has now is Gilligs and 5 New Flyers. At one point we had GM Fishbowls, Flxible Metro A, GMC RTS, Orion I and Orion V buses in our fleet. You would hear 6V92, Cummins L10, 6V71, and one DD S50 at our station. Those were the days. You never knew what would pull up.
@mmZo6
@mmZo6 14 лет назад
Yeah man since the older rts had either the 6V71 or an 8V71 but later on repowered with a 6V92. we hardly see rts's with the older stuff
@jmjfanss
@jmjfanss 13 лет назад
@8v71buses But the 6V92 RTS are the most famous ones, because I Was on that bus in broward county.
@ClassicTVMan1981X

Boston's MBTA had a lot of 6V71TA-powered RTSs. They were in the 8400, 8500, 8600 and 8700 series.

hey man, I miss these kind of buses, the inside of this bus from New Orleans looks the same, we had green seats on these buses, this is the second kind of bus I've caught, the GMC RTS buses are the best, it broke my heart when they retired these buses in our city in 1998.
@lesliemiros6743
@lesliemiros6743 7 лет назад
MrDominoes7 thats when they bought more Orion V buses in 1998 fifty were 40 feet and the 25 were 30 feet . follow three 35 foot versions in 2004 .
@lesliemiros6743

MrDominoes7. Jefferson transit had two of them in 1978 but they had blue seats in theirs.

Yes I Remembered Them Very Well. I Grew Up On The 42 Holman Crosstown Line. Metro Had The Mini Sliding Windows For Air. They Also Used These One The "Texas Special" Back Then Too. Damn Where's A Time Machine When You Really Need One. Because Theses Today's Buses Are Complete Garbage.

The 6V71TA was also used in the Lafayette Flxible Metros (1985-86) and the Indianapolis Orions (meaning the 1983 units), but it was Boston's MBTA that took the cake on ordering the most buses with the 6V71TA engine: their 1985 RTS 8400/8500s and their 1987 8600/8700s.

k jay The A/C was the Problem on the Early RTS's From 77 to 80 with the Slanted Backs, & Because the Windows Couldn't Open, So After Humorous Complaints From Transit Agency Like Long Beach Transit Who Got the Very 1st RTS Order in 77, & Nearby Gardena's Bus System & Montebello & OCTD (Now OCTA) Here in Southern California, Hertz Rental Cars Shuttle Bus, & Other Transit Systems Who Also Bought the Early Slanted Back RTS Between 77 & 80, Had to Retrofit the Early RTS's with Straight Back Kits to Fit Over the Slanted Back RTS After 1980. In 1980 GM Modified the The Back of the RTS With a Straight Back & Improved it's A/C System & Offered Sliding Windows As Standard on its RTS's After 1980, Here in L.A. the Old RTD (Now Metro) Bought the Largest Single Purchase Order of Transit Busses in the Nation at the Time... 940 RTS's (8200-9139) in 1980, & were Delivered in the 80/81 Fiscal Year With Non Open Windows. In Early 1983 RTD would Receive it Last Order of RTS Busses From GM, & Very Last From GM Period! 35, 35 Foot Busses (4400-4434), With Sliding Back Windows, & Different Style of Rear Doors.

@@waynewright2886 SEPTA kept their RTS fleet slantback and opted to refit a roof-mounted Sutrak A/C unit to cure the A/C issues.
@RRansomSmith
@RRansomSmith 4 года назад
@@waynewright2886 actually no. The flat back didn't come until the RTS series 04 later on and was later added to the 03s as a retrofit, but it was way after 1980. I'd say 1982 maybe.

Thank you. If I am ever there sometime, I'd like a ride in that bus. I guess he must have a lot of land to store this. This brings back memories of my childhood. How does your friend get the parts and maintain this bus?

I remember these when SEPTA ordered these in 1980 and couldn't understand why they were so short lived as they were being replaced by Neoplan AN Series buses
@josephheston9238
@josephheston9238 6 лет назад
Actually It wasn't the Neoplans that replaced the RTSs. It was the Ikarus/NABI buses that replaced the RTSs and older Neoplans.
