Their song "1979," released as a single on January 23, 1996, is one of their most iconic tracks. Reflecting Billy Corgan's teenage years and a sense of melancholy and nostalgia, "1979" became a commercial success, reaching number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was recorded quickly and almost didn't make it onto the album, with Corgan reportedly finishing the lyrics just before recording the vocals.
