Nice to see a young Warren Neill come on for QPR. He had a good time for us at Portsmouth.

Even by the low standards of groundsmanship there were back then, that is a shocking football pitch for a game in the first couple of weeks of the season.

Them markings in the middle of the pitch are from the Cricket Match played.

I went to this game and don’t remember Tommy Langley getting too much stick. Even when he scored. I was in ‘the benches’ in front of the West Stand so had a good view of Langley’s goal.

I was in the benches and he got a bit of stick "what we gonna do with Tommy Langley early in the morning ... shoot, shoot, shoot the bastard". He didnt help himself running past the shed giving plenty of signs after he opened the scoring. I hated him ever since.

@@reecesestak4607 Try and remember him as he was at CFC. The goal at Wolves in '77 between the keeper and the post and the backheel against Newcastle in the 4-0, 1980.

10:00- see the bloke in the sky blue disabled car watching the game from within his motor....There was always that car up near the Shed end back in the day!! RIP Petar Barota he used to concede some silly goals at times but was a character!

He was also a very good goalkeeper. The game at Upton Park at the start of the 1979/80 season, I swear that I will never witness a performance like that ever again. He was unbeatable. But yeah, he was a bit a maniac -

Even on a hard dry pitch they have trouble stringing more than a few passes together. These guys could run and tackle, but were not very technical.
@mjh5437

What is your definition of "technical"?
@Michael-cb5nm
@Michael-cb5nm 7 месяцев назад
@@mjh5437 Basically, being able to maintain possession under pressure, to move the ball forward systematically into dangerous areas (either to feet or at least spaces to run onto), and 1 v 1 skills. Watch a modern game, and you will see all of this in abundance. As I mentioned in the comment you responded to, I see very little evidence of the first two points and virtually no 1 v 1 skills. These players simply lack the ball mastery to do anything other than kick the ball forward when placed under pressure. It’s literally like watching a youth team match.

@@Michael-cb5nm haha, being able to maintain possession under pressure" Were you round in those days? Look what happened to Walker and what the commentators reaction was to the foul. In those days there was a pride, in most players, in staying on your feet. If you tried to play like players play today, there would be a pitch invasion every week. And back in the day the pitches were rougher so you needed better powers of anticipation. There was more emphasis on on fitness back then cos there was more pressure on people in general and footy was more about burning off aggression/ For me the debits outweigh the pluses in modern football/ I feel we've overshot the optimum. I prefer the crowds, the bumpy pitches, the diversity of both types of player and styles of football. The honesty of the officiating,.taken as a whole football was more rewarding experience for me then, now it is more "fun", entertainment. the lack of full contact makes it a bit sterile for me. In the old days the oiks could rough up the fancy dans. Those who had to do what they were told all week got a chance to see their team at least kick lumps out of those who were "less harried" than them. And you could let out all the frustration/steam from the week by chanting against the other team. There is a politcal dimension to footy that no one in this country ever mentions,. Simon Kuper writes about it and John Lennon mentioned it one of his songs, working class hero, but generally tying in footy and politics is a no no in this country.
