The popularity of electronic coin-operated machines like Space Invaders, Astro Wars, Galaxia and Pong has inspired a retrospective look at the history of slot machines at the Camden Arts Centre.
Nationwide's Jenny Clayton pays a visit to the exhibition, where historian and author Charlotte Parry-Crooke demonstrates some of the weird and wonderful antique slot machines on display. All manner of juke boxes, grip testers, kiss-metres, fruit machines and peep shows are exhibited, some of which date back as far as 1890.
Originally broadcast 20 October, 1980.
You have now entered the BBC Archive, a time machine that will transport you back to the golden age of TV to educate, entertain and enlighten you with classic clips from the BBC vaults.

This is an awesome look back, our age group think we were the first for `arcades` but there has always been a generation before us, us humans always look for distraction and entertainment. Love it.

Any idea what happened to fruit machines? I used to love pushing the button that spins 3 reels, sometimes you get nudges or holds and then you get to play an electronic board game stylised like Monopoly, Snakes & Ladders or cat-and-mouse chases, lit up by lots of lights. These machines were everywhere in the UK until not so long ago. Then 1-2 years ago, they all vanished without a trace

That seems a bit pedantic of you, I was born in '81 so am no stranger to arcades and I wouldn't know the difference between the two. It looks like a clone of Space Invaders, the gameplay is very similar to say the least. In fact I just read the Wikipedia entry for Galaxian, and it says it was Namco's answer to Space Invaders which had been released a year or so before...so anyone playing it would realise it was just a variation, just as there have been umpteen versions of Pac-Man, often given different titles but still essentially a Pac-Man game.

@@chestercopperpot9294 Still, I played Space Invaders. I've no idea if I played Galaxian or not, but if I did I probably would have recognised it as a different take on Space Invaders, which it clearly is.

If you worked for the company who made galaxian it wouldn’t be pedantic to resent it called space invaders. It’s like calling pepsi ‘Coke’ on tv

American still loves arcade games, but here is not use the games anymore. Because of waste of money makes the high price to create games link with pay-bills. Just out of order to take in action in here London! Because a lot of children love the game without going to school, you know?! Now, no longer user the place games. However, games are still used only for adults using the game machine at all. Otherwise, might get caught to without permission seek to ID!... Aye, aye, aye!! 😯
