Saw Jan and Dean at Ontario Place in 1986 & 87 . The first time in 86 with their introduction as they walked out on stage brought tears to my eyes. I never dreamed on ever seeing them do a live performance . It is a treasured moment I will never forget .

I know how you feel. My first J&D concert was THIS one in 1980, then again the following year. They did a day show and evening show in 1989 as well as 1990 and each time brought a ton of emotions.

My friends and I saw Jan & Dean perform live on July 17,1981 at the free track-side concert at the Meadowlands Race Track in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Paid only a few dollars to get into the place to see the concert after the last race was run. It was on the evening of the death of singer Harry Chapin. The host was WPLJ DJ Jim Kerr. We all had a moment of silence for Harry Chapin before the concert began. The group backing up Jan & Dean was The Bel-Aire Bandits. They gave a great performance. I recorded the show on an audio cassette tape which I still have and it still plays great. I recorded many of the concerts that I attended back in the 1980's & 1990's. I still have every one of them on audio cassette tapes. Back in 2009, I was operating a vending-distribution-delivery business. I was listening to New Jersey Oldies Station WMTR 1250 AM. When I pulled up to one of my delivery stops, WMTR was playing the Jan & Dean song "Surf City". When I walked into the store with their order, the contemporary station that they had playing on their store audio system was playing the Harry Chapin song, "The Cat's in the Cradle". Remember, he died the day that Jan & Dean performed at the Meadowlands Race-Track and we had the moment of silence for him before Jan & Dean performed. How weird is that? Jan & Dean playing on Oldies Radio Station WMTR when Harry Chapin was playing on the contemporary New York radio ststion at the same time. I was surprised by this. MAY WILLIAM "JAN" BERRY & HARRY CHAPIN BOTH REST IN HARMONY.

This band is very great. I really really admire Jan for what he did after the accident. And Dean has to be the very best friend a person can have for going out of the way to help his friend, although Dean probably doesn't think so. May Jan Rest In Peace

My wife and I where at this concert 3 days before my 32nd birthday. I thought that Jan Berry made a fantastic recovery after his big crash in his Corvette considering that they read him his last rights right there at the crash scene when it appeared that he would never make it alive. Considering all that he went through after the fact it's too bad that his health slowly declined until he passed away from all of the meds he had to take. Jan And Dean had a great career and they taught the Beach Boys a thing or two about singing surf songs. Don't forget that Brian Wilson help write Jan and Dean's biggest hit, "Surf City. RockinRonny.

Great video! I saw Jan & Dean live in May 1987 at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds in Goshen, Indiana. They did all of the songs that they perform here and Jan sang a terrific solo version of "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away." He started out by saying, "This song....is for John Lennon." You could totally feel the emotion in his voice. During the instrumental break after the first chorus and before the second verse, Jan said, "Oh John...I MISS you!" You could have heard a pin drop at that venue during that song--That's how touched the audience was, myself included. After it was over, Dean, ever the jokester, said, "John would be proud. John...Denver, that is!" Good old Dean--One of the great unsung comedians in Rock & Roll! They sounded terrific during the whole show and towards the end, Jan started gesturing to people in the front row near the stage to come up and join them, and by the end of the show, there were a whole bunch of people jumping and dancing on the stage along w/ Jan & Dean and The Bandits while they performed! I was able to get their autographs. Dean signed his autographs before the show. He was low-key, and simply said, "THANK you!" after signing my program. Jan signed autographs at a table after the show was over, accompanied by some pony-tailed dude (a bodyguard, presumably. I'm not sure). Jan was totally into conversing w/ the fans, asking them their names, making knock-knock jokes, and even doing a Laurel and Hardy impersonation where he went back and forth and imitated their voices to a T! The people laughed and applauded him, and the bodyguard said, "Laurel and Hardy, ladies and gentleman!" When it was my turn to get Jan's autograph, I just said, "Great job, Jan," and he smiled at me, nodded, and said, "Hey, thank you!" It was a day that I'll never forget! Jan & Dean RULE!!!

The third time I saw them was also at Ontario Place. Jan had a meet & greet after the show, we my cousin and I got a picture taken with him (wish I could find it). And when I pulled out my LP for him to sign he said "Oh WOW!" then stood up, showed everybody that was around, saying "This was the first album we ever made."

I was at their "second" comeback concert (which really was their first true comeback--no lip-synching) at the Starwood on Santa Monica Blvd. around 1977. They came down a short stairwell, Jan using a cane, his hair not this long. They were well-received, and Jan sang pretty darn well. Towards the close of Deadman's Curve, the music stopped, and Jan said, "I came back from Deadman's Curve," with the crowd going crazy. I had the chance to later see them in Pasadena for New Year's Eve and in Glendale at the yearly car show (as well as the honor to be part of their security team at another Glendale car show, which allowed me see them backstage).

Jan was one of my customers when I worked an electronics and stereo shop circa 1970. He was barely intelligible on the phone, but we have seen this phenomenon before -- stroke and brain trauma survivors who can't talk, but can sing, people who can't walk, but can dance. Ah -- the magic of music, which excites the part of the brain opposite the (possibly damaged) speech center. It took a lot of guts to make this comeback!

I saw Jan & Dean twice. Once in 1978 and again in 1985. Both times were noteworthy in that I got "backstage" and interacted with Jan (in '78) and both guys (in '85). The 1978 backing band was known as The Aloha Band. They didn't come across with the sunshiny, "clean" presentation that Papa Doo Run Run did, but they were ace musicians. Throughout the years, I have been really moved by the persistent fandom for Jan & Dean in the world. On RU-vid, there are videos of people in their 20s, post-2000, who are VERY into the duo. You gotta wonder HOW does a high school or college kid FIND (much less get into) Jan & Dean. Good stuff!

The drummer was Jim Shippey. They called him “Crazy” Jim, and you can see, in this concert, why they called him that. Met him (and Jim Armstrong and Mark Starr) at the memorial celebration for Jim Rush two years ago. Real nice guys.

@@ChrisReise . I always wondered about that. I just thought maybe it was a misprint in the description. As a member of the group, he was a 'starr'🌟😎

Even though I love Jan and Dean it always makes me a sad. Jan is amazing. After his accident he gets up on stage and performs. As it was almost the end for him..... it's so hard to see him like that. It's just sad!!
@ChrisReise
@ChrisReise Год назад
I would have to disagree with you, he spent more time on the stage after his accident than he did before. He felt MORE alive on that stage. And it was his strength and determination that GOT him back on the stage...especially after the doctors told him he would probably never walk or talk again.

@@ChrisReise We all have opinions. They have been around since the mid to late 50's. I remember the songs Baby Talk and Jenny Lee. He was determined to get back to the stage and I think that really helped him to recover. I have to give him a lot of credit to do what he did. I have to give props to Dean. We all should have a friend like that. They were the best of friends. What a great pairing! Will always love those guys.

OH, WOW.. I was actually there that evening. Spent the day at the C.N.E. with a friend, then went over to Ontario Place to cool off down by the lake. He surprised me by pointing out that Jan and Dean were at the amphitheater.. By the time we got there they were in the middle of Baby Talk. Thank you.. You just brought out a slew of old memories.

I was honored to have had the pleasure of knowing Jimi for the ten years that I did. He was a good man and I loved hearing his music stories. Miss him dearly. We went to the memorial celebration for him, two years ago, in Anaheim. All the original guys in the band (and in this video) were there, including “Crazy” Jim Shippey, Jim Armstrong and Mark Starr. The band (PDRR) get on stage played for everyone. John Stamos sat in on drums and guitar on a few numbers.
