This is all I have of this game, just the third period and the overtime.
The Rangers always had trouble beating the original Atlanta based Flames in the 1970s, and had lost to them 7-3 at MSG just a week before the Playoffs began. But as they say, you can throw out all the stats, the Playoffs are a new season. Atlanta lead 1-0 after two periods, but Steve Vickers would score the tying goal in the 3rd period. Phil Esposito almost won it in the final seconds. Vickers would then score the 2-1 overtime winner, barely 30 seconds into it. A rare overtime win at home for the Rangers.
This is the Atlanta feed, with future Islander play-by-play man Jiggs McDonald on the call. Seems strange hearing him and not seeing Islanders on the ice. The Rangers won the best of five series 3-1. The game four clincher, the last NHL game at Atlanta for the Flames, is available on You Tube here: • Video .

As much as I dislike The Islanders, I have always enjoyed Jiggs on the play by play. He calls it down the middle, and isn’t a homer. His, and Jim Gordon, were the voices of my childhood, watching the games with my dad. Such warm memories.

This is The Garden I think of when I think MSG. I remember sitting up in The Blues, looking down on the arena in awe of the colorful seats, and asking dad if we could sit in the Reds someday, He always told me, “the real fans sit up here”. Never argue with the old man. Some of that wonder is still there when I go to a game. But like most things, it’s not the same.

even as an islanders fan i hate what they did to msg. they really have pushed out the true blue collar fan. isles have gone corporate too with ubs arena i hate the place . now its mostly suits and millenials drinking there bs craft beers. i miss the days at msg and coliseum fans would be drinking bud out of a can while smoking a marlboro lol

Sadly, you guys all said it perfectly and summed up the fake place the Garden is these days . The blaring rock music between whistles , the T-shirt cannons, the focus on everything BUT THE GAME. I loved the place in the 80s and into the 90s. What is has become is simply pathetic

@@chris-dy1oi i was thinking same thing at isles game couple weeks ago. your senses are being bombarded every second. the small town feel you would get going to isles game at coliseum is totally gone. going to games at coliseum was the last place you could go where it didnt feel like corporate big buisness

Jiggs, down the middle? Every Islander was hauled down; every Ranger tripped over the blueline...the guy who was fair, accurate and down the middle was Ed Westfall.

Notice the players are managing just fine with the two line pass. Much larger neutral zone.

Awesome find. I had recorded this game also but either taped over or lost it. Same w game 6 1979 vs Islanders. Had Espos final game vs Buffalo also. The only vhs I still have is game 6 vs Capitals in 1986.

I see they mentioned the game was shown on TBS then called the “superstation” that’s where you were able to tape it from. Cool

I hope to. I have some regular season games I'm checking on. I just hope I don't get a copyright strike/ban from the NHL for posting too many. I did get one a few years ago on the one of the first posts I did.

akapper57 geez the nhl never preserved or saved these games they essentially tossed them in the garbage and now that you found these games they want to reclaim their garbage. Well thanks for posting them and hopefully we’ll be able to enjoy these games that they long ago discarded

Steven Hamburg spot on- shortsighted thinking on NHL’s part- posting of these classics is basically free promotion of their brand. They’re not alone, unfortunately, the NFL just recently gave great You Tuber Dave Volsky a cease & desist order.

4 straight cups were a lifetime ago. Stop talking like they did it a few weeks ago. Rangers are dysfunctional organization and we all know it. Islanders went 23 years before getting out of the 1st round of the playoffs from 1993-2016 and had their own futility. Live in the now dude.
@stevenbauer4799

@@joem3046 Wow talk about living in the past. Leave it to a trash rag fan to whine about isles two years after this comment was posted. Go bring in some more old expensive vets and lose in first round once again. And rags with all that $$$ have like one cup in 100 years. And that last one was over a quarter century ago, A bought cup that was really the '80s oilers re-united. How do you like that futility-dude?
@stevenbauer4799
@stevenbauer4799 9 месяцев назад
@@joem3046 Not my fault isles had a true dynasty rags fans can only dream of. And did it without all the $$$'s in the world at their disposal. And learn to read 10 year old. My comment was 2 years ago but still relevant. Not like rags have won shit in that time. haha y'all got dolan. Come back when rags win multiple cups in a row dude. Quick re-build, tease the base with lotsa hype, bring old stars. gretz, jagr, kane, espo, concussed lindros-thinking they'll bring their cup magic with them. Or just waste $$$'s by raiding nj fa's like gomez, holik, who turn to busts or on total busts like redden. rags '99-'04 spent a quarter billion dolan $$$'s just to miss the playoffs. holy fk talk about ineptitude. No one cares about butt hurt rags fans. Y'all don't have shit to brag about just like isles don't with gramps lou asleep at the wheel thinking its still the '90's. Isles got no future thanks to inept gramps and are looking at some serious re-build time-again. Been used to that for 40 years. That's why isle fans cling to dynasty and say 're-building since 1985'. That i will admit to. I wouldn't expect a pompous self-indulged rag fan with their huge hype machine to understand that. so be quiet and go away.
