The 1980 924 Carrera GT with 210 horsepower may not seem like much today but at the time it was more than many V8 powered sports cars. The 1980 Ferrari 308 GTS/GTB sold in North America with it’s 3.0 liter V8 was rated 205 horsepower and 181 lbs ft of torque. The 1980 Corvette with the 5.7 liter V8 only had 190 horsepower in stock trim and 230 horsepower in it’s highest spec trim. A car with similar specs as the 924 Carrera GT was the 1980 Lotus Essex Turbo Esprit. It was powered by a turbocharged 2.2 liter 4 cylinder engine and had 210 horsepower and 200 lbs ft of torque that only had to push a little over 2500 lbs down the road making it one of the quickest accelerating cars of 1980 with a 0-60 mph time of just 5.5 seconds. The 3400 lbs 230 horsepower Corvette did 0-60 mph in 7.1 seconds while the 3300 lbs Ferrari 308 did 0-60 mph in 7.2 seconds. Compared to the 1980/1981 Porsche 924 Carrera GT that was rated at 210 PS/207 HP and 203 lbs ft of torque and weighed in at just over 2600 lbs with a 0-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds cars like the Corvette and Ferrari 308 were slow. To get the similar or better acceleration times as the 924 Carrera GT in 1980 you had to get a Ferrari 512bb that did 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds or a Lamborghini Countach that did 0-60 in 5.1 seconds. Both cars cost considerably more than the Porsche. So despite the 924 Carrera GT being considered an underdog when you actually look at the performance of other high performance cars of the time the 924 Carrera GT is quite a good performer that goes toe to toe with the best sports cars of the day and even out performs many of them.

Do you wich engine is in that car ?. Is it the same as the 924 Turbo (only then tuned up) ?.
@porscheguy09
@porscheguy09 3 года назад
@@ArieVisker yes. The 924 Carrera GT was based off the 924 Turbo but the engine used a top mounted intercooler that helped lower intake temperatures, had a higher compression ratio and new digital ignition system that all bumped power up to around 210 horsepower. Then of course the suspension, body work and a few other things were modified and upgraded to make it a better performer. If I remember right they made 406 cars in total and they were only available in silver, black or red.

@@porscheguy09 thank you for the information. I have a couple of books about Porsche and I could not find this information. The seats are they ever been used in different Porsche models ?. I have never seen them in other Porsche cars.

@porscheguy09 3 года назад
@@ArieVisker the seats were the same “Sport” seats available in the 911 from 1981-1984 but featured a unique velour fabric design only available on the 924 Carrera GT. The description below was copied from the website I linked at the bottom of this response. The website loads in German but most computers and smartphones give you the option to translate it into English or whatever language you prefer. The website gives a complete overview of the 924 including the Carrera GT and lists all the specifications for each variant. The link should take you straight to the Carrera GT section of the website but if it doesn’t you can find it in the Menu. This is just one of many websites available online that discuss the Carrera GT. “Sports seats in solid pinstripe in exclusive black-red with all-round red piping. Leather steering wheel, leather gear stick. Selectable options largely identical to the 924 turbo optional extras (Targa, Klima, eFH, eSp, radio, electrical antenna, alarm system, rear wiper) “ werk924.com/924-carrera-serie/924-carrera-gt/

The entire 924/944/968 line doesn't get the respect they deserve. They literally saved Porsche, their achievement at LeMans is nothing short of astounding and to this day well kept versions of all these cars is about as rewarding a driving experience as there is. The 3 litre S2 and 968 and the Turbo S variants being the pinnacle of the species. Read Automobile magazines take on the 1989 944 Turbo S vs. the 911 Turbo on a track. In short the 944 ate the 911s lunch. Respect.

A work friend bought himself an 944 non turbo. Early model with the 6 O clock tach. I think I ached for a few days after I drove it. 1 because the non power steering was heavy as, but 2 because it was just so much fun. I've got 240z's, an RX7 and driven GTRs etc.. and although the 944 is quite slow by today's standards it's that mechanical raw feel and sound the engine makes in these cars that just feels special. And I adore the shape of them. Just so cool looking.
@FTCSD
@FTCSD 4 года назад
Yes the NA is low on power, Gen1 has even less. Pretty soft stock suspension too. But sorted turbos are faster than 996 gt3 cars on the track. The lack of power is more than made up for in the handling and surprisingly they beat the gt3 down the straight too. Now being beat by a soccer mom in a Cayanne S, while your in a NA, on an uphill stoplight while she is probably 25% throttle does really make you want to swap in a 968/S2 or LS in it though, that's for sure

Wonderful video, grew up absolutely loving the 924/944 series and finally at the age of 25 I bought my own 1982 944 last year, it’s got its fair share of issues (most notably the electrics which had been badly damaged by a leaking battery tray). However it’s become my daily driver and I absolutely enjoy driving it, it’s so unique on the road compared to modern euro boxes of today and it’s letting me learn how to look after cars as I’ve been doing a lot of work myself, certainly nice knowing I’m one of only a few people of my age who is willing to deal with an older car and it’s issues but it’s a rewarding experience!

Awesome story, but I still prefer the "owner story" format. There are TONS of car review websites. What makes Petrolicious so special is the celebration of the relationship between owner and car. There is an emotional attachment to the mechanical interaction of man and machine. Gas, gears, vibrations, grip, coffee, leather, sound, and clutch pressure lead to ... bliss. Petrolicious need to continue to capture that.

Petrolicious was special because the owners told how much they loved their cars from their special perspective. I appreciated the way the cinematography was secondary to the story. There's no such thing as a poor man's Porsche. They all require good maintenance, whether that's the complexity of a modern Cayman, or the usual classic car metalwork repairs and worn out parts of a classic. They will all be rewarding to own and drive though. My 924 Turbo is the best built car I have ever owned.

Not sure what you mean by "best built" but I have a 924 Turbo aswell and to me it feels quite cheap (but not bad for 70's standards). Like you can tell they used the Audi/VW parts bin a lot, for example the interior plastics feel cheap and its missing features like fender liners etc. but they sure are great to drive, I take mine to the autoslalom a lot and it gives modern cars a run for their money for sure.

I think the reality is there is always a faster car out there, and depends how much $ the owners wants to spend to get winning performance. So while no doubt your Porsche 944 is quick, and a fun great car, there is no doubt some Porsche 911 out there that can smoke it. I think it kinda comes down to the owners what they like, what they want to spend and all their personal preferences. I have a base 911 Carrera, its pretty spunky, its not the fastest street car out there, but like it suits my purposes, its dam fun to drive, heck I would love to have a 944 I love the look of those cars. I would happily have more 911, 944, 928, 924 they all are awesome sports cars.

The Porsche 924 was a fantastic sports car and it only got better as 924 Turbo (931). I even think that these models were better than the later 944. Something pure and simple was lost and especially after the 944 got a facelift in the second half of 1985 with, among other things, a completely new and for me totally uninspiring interior/dashboard. The weight also increased with the years from light 1080 Kg the first couple of years with 924 to over 300 Kg more for the last years with 944 Turbo (951). The dream was of course a 924 Carrera GT (937), but that model was out of financial reach for me in the early 80's. When I got the opportunity a few years later, I bought a 928 S.

@Hvitserk67
@Hvitserk67 4 года назад
@@gav240z Absolutely, but the 924 Turbo (931) fom. the mid-1981 is actually not much more inferior than the 924 Carrera GT (disregarding the design and exclusivity - only 406 was built). The 931 officially had 177 hp from the same 1984 cm3 large four-cylinder engine (vs. 210 hp for the 924 Carrera GT), but I have both experienced and heard about (ie then in the mid 80's) several 931's that were measured with a dyno for everything between 190 and 210 horsepower. The consensus at the time was that the engine in 931 (mrk.II) actually produces in excess of 200 HP. I have even experienced that a standard 931 fought head on against a prefacelift 944 Turbo (951) with 220 HP on the Autobahn over a long distance. It fell short only due to poorer brakes (which by default was taken from the 928 S) and thus hot running before the more modern brakes on the 951. Fun fact: the 924 Turbo has Porsche's internal number 931. The very first 911 Turbo (from the G-Series in 1974 ) had the internal number 930. 924 Carrera GT was a further development of 931 so it got the internal number 937. 924 Carrera GTP and GTR has the internal number 939. 924 Carrera GTR had in 1981 375 HP from the same Audi based two-liter four-cylinder engine as the original 924 model with 125 HP five years earlier. At this time, the standard 911 Turbo 3.3 (930) had 300 HP. The 924 Carrera GTR (939) was a thoroughbred racing model with a top speed of almost 395 Km/h (245 mph), but still :)

I had the pleasure of driving a 944 turbo back in the day, it was quite impressive. Ergo was great, right where you expect everything, handling was incredible, and back then, it was quite a fast car, this car I have much respect for, and the 924 Carrera GT, but it is a bit of a unicorn.

Note on 1981 Le Mans, Walter Rohrl raced the first "944", with the new M44 engine, a 2.5 litre, dual overhead cam, 4 valves per cylinder, turbocharged motor. Not expecting the brand new motor to last it somehow won the class. You might recognize it as the Hugo Boss 924 GTP/944 LM (Not even the Porsche museum can decide what it's called)

Hopefully Petrolicious will continue to make beautifully presented biographical passion projects. These car infotainments are a dime a dozen on RU-vid.

I really hope this isn't what Petrolicous becomes. I liked the niche videos with the owners narrating. I don't need another journalist view over cars.

My question now is having owned a 944t, whether I should restore a 914-6 or a 924 S / turbo etc of some kind. "...born as it was from the reshuffled plans of a water-cooled Volkswagen sports car that never came to be...placing at Le Mans..." I thought this was about the 914 winning Le Mans and being chilled out by Porsche to avoid dethroning the 911, for a minute there.

This is just as any other youtube road test. Not like the original Petrolicious were owners told their story with the car. We all already know the story and specs of this classic cars, we want to see how is to own them and live with them. ALL LIVES MATTER!!!!

This isn’t a “new” format people! It’s just one video from the numerous other style series that are available to paid subscribers, that has been made available on RU-vid. This video has been available on the paid site for months. Probably while they (hopefully) produce new content. I guess there is a new owner but I’m guessing that there has been a drop in almost all productions, it is hopefully only temporary.
