@@Valkonnen - I think it was his way of trying to rationalise George Lucas's decision, perhaps George Lucas may have alluded to this himself when explaining why someone else is doing the voice.

Jones is a Shakespearean actor starting in the 50's. He has never spoken in a slang heavy, stylized way that is associated with a large portion of the black population. He was chosen because his voice was deep and commanding.

Ultradude-but Vader had aged many many years & became machine by the time he was shown in Empire& Jedi, then dying on that shuttles platform as Sebastian Shaw. He didn't die looking like Hayden. I do agree with you. I think he should have played Anakin Skywalker in Return of the Jedi. That way it would have been less frustrating to him that he didn't do the voice. Because I honestly believe James Earle jones voice did make Darth Vader very much more memorable. But it was very pointless how they go Sebastian Shaw to play Anakin for just one little scene. I believe 100% That should have been David Prowse. But at least he was still listed in the credits as Darth Vader

***** I honestly won't argue with that, but I was also under the impression that he was given the lines that Obi-Wan was his father and that only Mark, Kersh, and George knew the truth. Even when James Earl Jones went in to do the voiceovers, he didn't believe Lucas was writing the truth. He thought Vader was lying. I'm not sure Prowse ended up spoiling much of anything, thankfully, especially considering that was a local newspaper, not some national publication. No one in the U.S. or any other country for that matter probably heard anything about this. There was no internet to spread such information and people only had TV trailers to go on, which weren't shown nearly as much as they are now. I say Prowse is still under appreciated for his work and still a gentleman by all accounts.

+ianA I agree, having read his autobiography, he strikes me as a genuine individual who is perhaps a bit of an innocent in the cynical movie world. There are a few accounts of strained relationships and misunderstandings, which seem to be the result of secret agendas and power plays that he appears to have been unaware of. Looks to me like people have under-appreciated him, and lied and attempted to manipulate him at various times.

I met him, he was the kindest man ever, can’t believe he played the galaxy’s most evil villain. I also lost loads of respect for Lucas too, his only good contribution to the franchise was starting it off with ANH, other directors made the other two movies and then Lucas made that awful prequel trilogy and then sold the franchise to greedy Disney and they just pissed on the corpse of Star Wars even more.

It was because he had made a joke about Darth Vader being Luke's father before Empire's release, but he didn't know, they kept it from him, gave him alternate lines to keep him from knowing, so what he said turned out to be an accidental spoiler. It's their fault, they should have told him, so he'd know what not to say.

Randy Wise I don't think his contributions can be overstated as he actually played the character. You can't overstate that. He was the actor who was on set playing the character. Maybe they could have gotten other people to do the role, but the same can be said about any other role in the movie. This guy played the character, nothing overstated about that.

He was never payed, was never told he was to be dubbed and was never told about Empire Strikes Back’s father reveal which led to him jokingly saying “yeah I’m Luke’s father lol” without knowing it was true which caused him to be let go at the end of ROTJ and denied the face reveal which led to people thinking it was Sebastian Shaw in the suit the entire time, everything bad that happened is Lucas’ fault, the only good thing he contributed to Star Wars was creating it, after that all the success came from two different directors.

Lucas had the line written down as “Obi-Wan killed your father” and Prowse said in an interview jokingly that Vader is Luke’s father and then low and behold, Lucas decided that’s what he was going to be doing and then got angry with Prowse for “leaking” something that he didn’t even know. All of the trauma suffered by Prowse could’ve been avoided if Lucas actually told him the plan.

One of his first early roles was Othello so I would say to david prowes (who I’ve met and was a bit reluctant to shake my hand) that the “negro” voice that replaced him was well renowned and respected for not only his speaking roles but his narration too! Being black myself I found that comment a bit cringy! However back to my point; any person would be honoured to have someone of James’s calibre voicing them! On another note I’ve met the presenter of the program Chris Kelly too! I used to deliver his post as a postman and he was the most nicest person with the most warmest personality you could have met! Clapperboard was one of my favourite programs as a kid and I did let that slip out but he was so humbled by the compliment! What a gent
