Robin Cousins narrowly defeats Jan Hoffmann and takes the gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid after this long program placed 1st in the segment.
Interestingly, Jan Hoffmann actually had a higher accumulated judges score, but Robin Cousins had a lower judges total ordinal score.

And to this day; one of the BEST open, single axels...the HEIGHT and incredible control!

it's a delayed axel

@@pahoellyyy You are correct. Once I jumped so high...and open, I got delayed and was STUCK in the air. And this was back in the days when I skated for the Ice Capades during opening number. And lived to tell about.

Forty years ago today (23 Feb 20). The most dramatic skating routine I ever saw, because after the early error we all knew were was no room for another. I could barely breathe for the rest of the programme. Now that's what you call a true British Champion.

That initial delayed axel ... oh my gosh, the speed on the ice, the height, the grace with which it was done; it's every bit as good as any triple or quad or let's-see-how-many-points-I-can-get jump that you will ever see.

@@etaoinshrdlu7247 Thank you! So like I said I don’t have any technical knowledge but when I saw this jump (even though I didn’t know it was a delayed axel), I was amazed by how flowy and elegant it was. Aesthetically speaking, I loved this performance.

Robin skated with pure grace and fluidity. “Perhaps the loneliest sport in the world.” I believe Jan moved like a board in skate boots. Robin skated with the music. Jan skated against it. Champion Robin!

His style kind of resembles John Curry. Like John, he was also able to do camels in both directions. This is rarely seen today. His jumps were so high they floated through the air. If quads would have been the norm back then, he would have had a quad. You can only be as good as the best in your event, as they say.

The only recent male figure skater who even comes close to the artistry of the likes of Robin Cousins and John Curry is ( IMO) Jason Brown
@sedekiman824
@sedekiman824 6 месяцев назад
Yes he is built along the same lines. The thing that sets John Curry, Robin Cousins, Jason Brown apart, is their line. They are blessed with almost perfect proportions, short waisted, and long legs that give a long stretched line. Giving great elegance to their skating.

I miss this era when artistic interpretation counted as much as filling your 4 min programme (4:30 for men) with as many triples/quads/combis as possible so much that I don’t watch figure skating anymore. However artistry is subjective whereas take off/landing of jumps on the correct edge and pre/over rotation isn’t and it does eliminate bias 😞

@mishop2278
@mishop2278 2 года назад
@alexeyp42
