AIDS arrived on the scene in 1981, and Chernobyl blew up in 1986. The 1980s weren't all honey and sunshine. Our government (USA) tried to tell us that catchup was a vegetable, remember? Some lovely music was being made back then, however. "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" was released in 1983.

not like this. while i HAVE experimented with the volca beats sync out into the juno 60 and it worked but there was no way to set the clock to anything but 16ths. (well there was , but it involved using the 707's clk out into the volca's sync in and then out to the juno, essentially using the volca's sync out as a sync thru, and then still limited to 8ths and 16ths taking the option of getting intertesting patterns away) but since the microkorg has midi thru and a built in "programable" arpeggiator you could clock the microkorg with an external clock and send the midi through into the volca. it'd be in sync, but thered have to be a master clock somewhere as the microkorg doesnt send midi clock out (that i know of, feel freee to correct me if im wrong)i'm not sure, but it's also very likely that the volca beats can be modded for midi clock out , in which case you'd just send the midi out into the microkorg. the microkorg can only be clocked externally by midi.

I used to do this with a Roland 626 and an Akai S01. I'd write everything in drum patterns, including melodies. Really good fun.

I don't know if I came in to see this video before. I kept thinking you bring back that aura of the 80's every time I hear you play. It's so incredible what those instruments can do. It's like the music never stopped. I can remember what I enjoyed the most of the 80's was the synths and the sounds that they produced. When I hear it from your channel it's like stepping back in time. I get very nostalgic when I hear you play. I'm glad to listen to your tutorials. I do hope this type of music will make a come back. I miss it very much. Thank you so much for your tutorials. They are very informative and very educational.

8:06 The TR-707 (rimshot trigger out) cabled to the Juno-60 (arpeggio clock in) allows for irregular patterns not just straight 1/8s 1/16s. The built-in arpeggiator plugins in Logic Pro X seem only to support regular patterns with a rate knob to specify the length of notes. It would be amazing if we could create a rimshot drum synth track with any step pattern and have an instrument track arpeggiator sync to that rimshot track as trigger. Some of the workflows on old gear are so intuitive and inspiring. edit: There is a way in LPX for Alchemy go to the ARP tab enable the ARP mode then change step/multi, or for other software instruments add an ARP midi FX and change from live to grid and enter the steps just like you would with rimshots on the TR-707 and choose a note order. Lots of mouse clicking isn't nearly as fun or easy as using pads on a drum machine but it can be done.

A great video which gave the most important hint composing 80s synth songs. Triggering the bassline by the rimshot. So simple, but helps me to produce interesting basslines. Thanks for this SynthMania.

THIS is one of the reasons i have 2 tr 707's people ask "why do you have 2 707's when you also have a drumtraks ? " because i have more than one synth with arpeggio clock in , and i'd like them to have differing rythm patterns. the clik out on the drumtracks only sends the trigger in what ever time the beat is in.. well i "guess" I COULD just run the arppegio with the rim out on the DT now that i think of it .. anyhow sweet sounding stuff, man. inspiring and informative.
@PHAEDRIDER
@PHAEDRIDER 7 лет назад
plus another reason i have 2 707s is because i havent met the person with 2 727s that wants to trade one for one of them which i'd do in a heartbeat.

great videos. After watching the first 80's Arpeggio video, I tried doing it myself. I do own a Juno 60, but do NOT have any of the TR drums machine that have the sync. FYI, I just happen to also own a Novation Basstation rack that came out in late 90's which happens to have CV. I use my DAW which is Digital Performer (but this works with anyone of them). I found a patch on the Basstation that is VERY percussive with quick hit. I programmed the DAW to play the Basstation on the Midi. The Basstation has a audio out and I also used a 1/4 plug for CV out. I am able to first hear the Audio out and made it even more percussive, kinda like the RIM or cowbell on the TR707. I then muted the audio and the CV out of the Bass Station then played into the Arpeggio Clock In 1/4 on back of the Juno 60. This is how I am able to mimic that 80's arpeggio with my BELOVED Juno 60.

Dear Sir - i've been mucking around with softsynths for so long, i had forgotten how amazing real analog sounds. But, since things like your Juno are so hard to acquire/expensive, have you ever found anything less expensive that has that sound? It's weird, but i can listen to softsynths and 'virtual analog' and all that, and they sound 'good'... but when i hear real analog, it gives that 'scrunch-up your face feeling' and takes me back to when music was so powerful.....

Simply pick a mono analog synth like the microbrute and some ambiant effect and you're all set for life.

Been hearing some good things about and from Roland's little JU-06A. It's got the sounds (digitally simulated but quite good) and has the classic Juno controls layout, albeit scaled down to "boutique" size. I think I'd probably take that over an antique hardware Juno 60 or 106. Those beasts cost too much these days, they are more prone to crankiness and breakdown than a new one, and I don't have enough room in my studio for a classic 60 or 106. I can make room for a JU-06A though.

It's interesting that the pattern at 3:51 reminds me of a song called 'Thinking About Your Love', by Skipworth and Turner, 1985, they used that drum pattern for their tune which had a soul/disco feel. Still intrigues me how a pattern can be used with such variety as it sounds totally different in the pop examples you showed.

Hi. Caught this Video the other day and tried to emulate the same process with a TR-8 and Bass station 2 but to no avail. I used MIDI and programmed the RS to drive the Bass Station 2, which worked, but when using the other drums of the TR8 it changed the output of the BS2. This is of course because the MIDI output of the TR8 is global and not assigned strictly to the RS which does not have its own output. Does anyone have any workarounds for this?
