Conny van Rietschoten returned to the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1981-82 determined not just to defend his title but to win both line honours on every leg, and the overall race on handicap. Impressively, with his Flyer II, he was able to accomplish just that. He also had some young and impressive young talent on board to help him on his quest, including Grant Dalton, who would go on to become an icon of the race in his own right, while Sir Peter Blake skippered his own campaign for the first time.

Enjoyed that thanks, sailing will never be like like again, can't believe the amount of spectator boats that came out for the start in Auckland

Wow, drinking beer and sunbathing! And where is the Branding on the boats? What a wonderful old film.

29:30 I wonder what's worse? Doing battle with Southern Ocean storms, or trying to avoid collisions with the flurry of spectator boats before you even get out of the harbour?! :-)

Howcome there is no reporting on the Croky? Smallest ship in the Race, finishing 15th with legendary skipper Gustaphe 'Staf' Versluys?

I thinking i hadn't ruined my early life chasing drugs and parties. I really believe i could handle this sailing. In my field i climb and hang stories up, im an ex mechanic, current journayman carpenter, appliance repauir mannd , & have lot if IT experience, even some navigation. Been on water my whole life. I think i could really love the life of freedom and working towards a career. Sadly life happens and im stuck thousands of miles from oceans. Yes ive sailed on lakes but not even the same thing . I feel with my experience of 20years fixing things from cars, PCs, and 29 story skyscrapers. I was a certified professional in mechanics and carpentry and few others and believe people like me can assimilate into any challenges just like what being on a boat requires. Im just some poor laid off carpenter wishing i could get into this field. Even if my small size keeps my from grinding the winches i could be a yard hand or a greenhorn deck hand. I just wish i was close to these yards and just let me prove i am a problem solver and hard worker. I get burnt out doing same job daily so sailing is so desirable because there is always something to do. Likely should have went to college but the knowledge ive gained by working 10k plus hours in trades makes me ideal in these situations. Like all men i crave challenge and knowledge and mastering a field that requires repetitive unfulfilling burns me out. I realky should have followed 5year old me who desired mechanical engineering. Anyway, maybe just maybe someday i can get close or live my dream. Any sailorst/teams here wanting "jack of all trades greenhorn im 100% in.

23:30, He really said 34 knots??? (And the images shows 31+ already...). For a monohull from 1981? I find it astonishing! Wasn' top speed of 2014 100-feet full-carbon supermaxi Comanche around 38 knots? Seems only 4 knots increase in top speed for such high-tech and higher power to weigh ratio? That could be misleading. The thing is that modern carbon supermaxis allow to sustain much higher *average* speeds than these 1981 maxis. But still, impresive indeed.

I recall hearing on a radio report back then (1ZB Auckland probably) that Ceramco had hit 40 knots surfing somewhere on the way to Cape Horn. Maybe someone else can confirm?

There´s an unsupportable amount of commercials in this film, almost impossible to watch. Every 5th minute or even more frequent.

I don't know if it's worth the gamble... lights mast and rigging if it breaks you lose time.
@mcduck5

It's a balance, heavy rigs are slow, if your slow you can't win. But if it breaks you can't win either lol
