It was because of the "National Maximum Speed Law" in the US passed back in the '70's. The government mandated that most highways should have a speed limit of only 55mph (55 alive!) to save gas and for extra safety, plus a "maximum legally allowed" speed of only 85mph! So speedos back then were only allowed to read up to 85mph even though most vehicles could go much faster (My wing reads 80mph with one tick mark past that for the 85mph, although I've had my GW up to about 105 on the GPS). They must have altered the law in the mid-1980's, as my buddy's '83 GW has a 135mph speedometer.

Right around 40mpg. Anywhere from 42 if I'm staying 55 alive, to 37-38 if I'm leaving Harleys in the dust...Course mine has the older style, lower geared differential. They upped the gear ratio somewhere between 82-83 for better mpg (about 45-50mpg from what I'm told), which is nice for economy, but you loose that "rocket-ship" feel when you roll on the throttle!
Just out of curiosity, what kind of fuel economy do you get with your goldwing? I'm thinking about trading my old Suzuki for one next summer to use as a summer daily driver to save some gas.
