One of the greatest things about these yearly reviews is looking at the poster art. It's amazing how talented these artists were and it's a shame this is no longer an aspect of film production.

I agree. Movie poster art used to be very cool and beautiful back in those days.

Even for the shitty movies the art is stellar

Brad just reviewed The Pizzagate Massacre. That poster is absolutely gorgeous and it looks straight out of the early '80s! We need actual artists to make movie posters again instead of forcing graphic designers to make something in a day using photos of the actors.
@TuxKamen
@TuxKamen 2 года назад
I've often wondered why DVD box art has gone away from poster art and into "Here's a portrait of one of the characters!"
@bluecollie55_movies25
@bluecollie55_movies25 2 года назад
@@TuxKamen Yeah, it would be cool for DVD and Blu-ray covers to have more artful classic movie poster art! If I were able to produce movies I would use great poster art to advertise my films instead of cheap photo "art", all both for theatrical release and home DVD release.

You can tell Brad is a MST3K fan by him naming the director of 'Take This Job and Shove It' as Gus Trichinosis (a running joke on the show) over his real name, Gus Trikonis.

This was a great time to be a moviegoer. I was reviewing many of these films for the college paper at the time while hitting all of the many venues for arthouse, indie, foreign and classic movies that existed in the big city at the time. I would watch new stuff one day and RW Fassbinder, or the Marx Brothers, or Humphrey Bogart or D.W. Griffith the next. There will never be the likes of those times again.

Lloyd (audio) -> 41:28 Thank you, Brad, for this. I enjoyed your ‘1980 in Film’ video last year and was ecstatic to see you continued the cinematic retrospective. As a horror fan, I have seen pretty much all of the horror/slasher films of ’81 (except for Scream, Nightmare, and Watcher In The Woods, and I plan on watching all of them, along with ‘Thief’). In total, I’ve seen 67 of the films you covered in ‘1981 in Film’. I know it takes you several months to get these types of retrospective videos done and I greatly appreciate your efforts. It offers us opportunities to watch movies that we ordinarily wouldn’t be interested in viewing. Can’t wait to see ‘1982 in Film’ next year! P.S. - My birthday is three days before yours! 😊

Man,what a year '81 was. I was 8 years old and had an equal amount of intrigue,fear,and fascination at the movies that were being released in the theaters and the flicks that were being featured on Cable that I couldn't watch without sneaking out to view. Love this analysis!

Here's a 1981 movie that you forgot and I watched for the first time yesterday. It's called Southern Comfort, it stars Keith Carradine, Powers Booth, Alan Autry, and Fred Ward and was directed by Walter Hill. It was a about a group of Louisiana National Guardsmen who get hunted down by Cajuns after stealing their boats. When I looked it up, the movie didn't do great financially and Walter Hill said it was more well received outside of America. It's definitely one of his best movies.

I was 5 years old and due to the fact my parents couldn’t find a baby sitter, I went along with them to celebrate my godfather’s 21st birthday. After dinner at Red Lobster, my godfather brought up that he wanted to see a movie. For whatever reason, STRIPES was either sold out or the last show of the day had started. Second choice was TARZAN, THE APE MAN!! My parents said they got so many looks from others in the audience and were glad I just fell asleep within the first 10 minutes. Great video!

Raiders has that effect on people. I remember Time magazine calling it "the movie movie." It was Spielberg and Lucas's tribute to the adventure serials of the 1930s and 40s they loved as kids, and the way it's structured reflects that, with cliffhangers every 15 minutes or so. Seriously, you could chop it into 10 parts and show each one as an installment of a serial with a cliffhanger ending.

I think she found it somewhat cathartic since Crawford's portrayal in the movie is very in line with how her own mom often treated her. 1981 was a great year for movies, especially horror. Many I got to see in a theatre but others I missed and had to wait for them to air on cable tv. The joy was going to see a movie that you knew nothing about apart from the trailer. I saw Heavy Metal at a local drive-in and got to see American Pop on HBO. The former is very hit and miss but the latter is a classic of adult animation. Some of those slasher flicks make me cringe to admit that I saw them. It was a great year for werewolf films, each a unique take on the genre. I highly recommend reading the Thomas Berger source novel of Neighbours. It is darker than the film and gave me nightmares. I didn't see Pennies From Heaven until years later and even longer to see the original British tv version starring Bob Hoskins in the Steve Martin role. The British version is better. The 80's gets much better around '84 and onward when we get the first Coen brothers films, Spike Lee, Jim Jarmusch, and other independent directors who offered an alternative to the Hollywood junk being released at the same time.
@graemesmith6721
@graemesmith6721 2 года назад
Heavy Metal is one of my all-time favorite movies, just because of how wildly creative and outrageous it is. I had seen Ralph Bakshi's "Wizards" a few years earlier, which is also rather adult-oriented, but that's mostly because of the violence, since there's no actual sex in it. Heavy Metal goes all out, with characters doing things that certainly would have earned it an X-rating if it had been live-action. I also love "American Pop." Both movies have awesome soundtracks.

1981, I was in elementary school living in Columbus Ohio but also would spend the summer in northern New Jersey.

This was great! Brad, if you do 1983, PLEASE, please cover the Robin Williams/Walter Matthau film The Survivors, the funniest thing released in '83 in my opinion. Also don't forget to review Get Crazy. After all, where else can you see Malcolm McDowell imitating Mick Jagger?

When the guy said Denzil Washington instead of Denzel I laughed my ass off

That's how it was pronounced for the first years of his career. I still say "Denzil" lol

Lol I actually own that one on VHS. As a huge Denzel fan I had to buy it when I had the chance. Needless to say, he's made a few better movies in his career ;) Cheers.

@@Pocketrocket-pj1us And it's from the director of Snob subjects Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Jerk Too! (Michael Schultz is a bit unusual -- a Black journeyman director who did a lot of big studio stuff, like Car Wash, Scavenger Hunt, and The Last Dragon. He still works in TV to this day.)

Back in the early days of the encore movie channel, they used to show most of these movies. That's where I've seen the trailer for Tim before.

I watched Cutters Way for the first time about 6 months ago. It was one of the best movies I've seen this year.

1:20:24 Regarding S.O.B., you show William Holden, while describing William Holden as the director. His character was not the director. The director was Richard Mulligan, in full freak-out mode. Holden played an executive and friend of the director. Holden is the still center around which hugely broad scenes and characters play out.
