Saw your comment on my KZ750 starter clutch video. Yeah you definitely need to get that out of there and see what's going on. On mine, I installed a new set of rollers, pins and springs, but it didn't fix the problem. I had a bunch of wear on the back of the flywheel that was interfering with the starter clutch operation. I don't know much about the 1981 model, but head over to the KZRider forum for some help. Those guys are great.
SPROCKET,STARTER,58T = $49; (part # 758487); then CLUTCH-ASSY-ONEWAY = $ 91.50 ( part #768186 ). That fixed the problem. Both the sprocket has a hub with outer race that wears and the clutch assy is what holds the pins and rollers that gets worn by the rollers constantly rolling over the sprocket hub. Good luck guys. I won't be able to afford a bike for a long time. Just getting back to walking and playing hockey again.
Note: new clutch assembly come with new springs, pins, and rollers already. Selling my parts: NEW: 3 springs = 92081-110 3 rollers = 92122-004 3 pins = 92122-004 USED: Starter clutch one way assembly = 13193-1062 Starter 58t gear = 12046-1032
I had to replace the whole starter clutch assembly (cheapest from bikebandit). The kit comes with the pins and springs and rollers, the sprocket and hub. I'll check for the part #'s. Last July I hit a deer on the bike so now it has been scrapped.
hey justin. I have a LTD from 1980 asume its the same motor. Have you seen any repair video or description how to fix this... like a DIY manual or something? I think it will be expensive to get a real mechanic to fix for me so think i need to learn to fix it myself.. regards from denmark
I also have a 1980 KZ750 LTD Twin. My starter clutch started spinning and not turning over the engine. There are three spring, pins and rollers inside this clutch. Usually it’s just the tension on the springs do not have enough strength to push the pins/rollers to engage the clutch. If you look hard enough there are videos out there how to fix this. It’s not that difficult. There are kits out there, but I would suggest you just start with the springs. You will also need a new cover gasket. Also.....and this is important the bolt that holds the starter clutch to the motor has to be turned right, not left to loosen it. That I saw in a video and didn’t remember it.....till I couldn’t break the bolt loose....then I remembered, and didn’t ruin my clutch. Good luck.
Yep, replaced my springs, pins and rollers and the "rattling/slipping" still happens. Happens less but it's still there. Other wear items would be the gear hub that contacts the rollers OR the clutch assembly where the rollers rotate. Seems stupid the rollers wouldn't be softer so they are the wear part. My 81 doesn't have a fly wheel. I have to wonder if I put the old springs in with the new springs to in essence increase the spring pressure if that might help. Springs seems pretty weak.
Put 2 springs in each spot ( not end to end but meshed then together side by side) and nothing changed. Got online and ordered a new starter clutch 58t gear (rollers grab the hub) and the one way clutch assembly (holds the rollers). No more slipping.
Hi Justin, I have 1985 Kawasaki Vulcan 750. No compression on all 4 cylinders, the starter spins but no compression engine did turn over but i was able to plug my finger into the holes without it blowing my finger off during the whole cycle. I bought it from a guy. He said gas got down the cylinders but he turn it off, he said last time it started but was back firing a lot so i sell it to me. Do you think the starter clutch is the culprit? I can hear whining noise but look like the cylinder does turn over but very weak. I have sparks too. Plz help. Did you replace it while it is on the bike? Can i do it on mine? thanks
+conchim99 take off side covers, and turn the flywheel with a wrench (while bike is off) with one of the spark plugs out, and finger in. (size 17mm i think)
+conchim99 A agree with Vasiliki Rgney, turn over crankshaft by hand using shaft under side covers and check compression before deeming starter clutch bad. Not sure if your clutch is the same as mine. I think your clutch may be easily accessible under an side crank shaft cover.Put some oil in the cylinders too after, might reveal signs of weak compression /bad-worn piston rings. Try and verify visually if your clutch is turning but not turning crank shaft. Good luck.
