I remember that test. I think it was Dirt Bike magazine and it was with only a gearing change it could go like 123 mph out of the box. Bullet proof engines. It’s a gorgeous bike. I’d wanted one way back then. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Very nice. I'd love to have a 1981 in my 495 collection. They are pretty expensive these days. Guess I'll have to stick with my 82-84 model 495's. I think you sold me (Ebay) a 84 only fork set a few years back. Just finishing up 2, 1983, 495's. Next is another 1984, and a 1982, 495. I think I have all the parts, but you always end up missing something you thought you already had. Have fun with your 1981. Never sell it.

That supposed 123 mph was never officially timed. Johann Hamm has the official 500cc air cooled record on a 1983 Husky 500 XC. 2016 Speed Week in SA. 127 mph. Stock production record. Gearing, tires, blueprinted motor only mods.
