Rest in Peace Bobby Knight The Greatest fearlessly meticulous impeccably prepared Coach with an infectious contagious ferocious competitiveness to Win !
All of these announcers are gone now. They've all passed away. R.I.P. to Dick Enberg, Al McGuirre, and Billy Packer. They were all sports broadcasting legends!
I agree. Some speculated the game s/have been postponed because Reagan was shot. But I always thought it was good to play it, kinda 'take people's mind off things' so to speak. After he came too, he said he was glad they played it on schedule.
I liked when they played in the domes and setup the court in the end zone. Reminds me of when the Sonics played in the Seattle Kingdome. I don't like how they do it now where they put the court in the center of the field. As a fan I bet it's damn near impossible to see anything.
Buck, that is a very point that gets overlooked. The background effects the players when they shoot the ball; some games have very poor FG %. The Phoenix Suns have a state of the art Arena but, they're playing the Final Four in the Arizona Cardinals Stadium.
@@johnschofer5806 going from small school gym to the Tacoma Dome to play at state in 1998 took some real adjustments. saw so many air balls from kids I grew up playing against/with, who were GREAT shooters. Team that win state averaged 83 regular season and 59 at state. And at the college level, it's just "who's gonna shoot less bad" , and win. Although those damn Baylor guards couldn't miss if they tried to in the first half vs my zags a few years ago, so there are exceptions.
Thank you for not using God's name, we beat you earlier, Worthy in foul trouble you won us, hate Al Wood no title.82 we all the way, one of the best teams ever.
Thanks for posting this. First time I've seen video of Landon Turner playing. Wow, you can see he had an NBA future if not for his car accident. Great athleticism. But also a great wingspan with those long arms. Didn't know he had that.
yeah man, I remember Landon's talents and maturity started growing in leaps and bounds during that his Junior Year. He was very close to Len Bias talents. Coach Knight made sure Landon was well taken care of after that accident. I remember thinking if we (IU) got Isiah to come back with Landon and others, unbeatable once again. I hope his life has been great.
I don't know about Len Bias. Landon Turner was more like Ben Wallace with a little more offense. He was a very good player, would have made an impact on the NBA.
A prayer was not normally part of the pre game acitvities and the national anthem was not shown. And had the events of that day not happened there would have been no prayer and the anthem does not get televised. And FWIW every sporting event(except the Super Bowl in those days) did not televise the anthem
Sounds like a guy born in late 50s 60s. CBS was Nfc. NBC Afc. NBC had all their Play by play guy that were great at having to send you to a end of game Afc game. They Had Charley Jones, Bill Simpson, Don Criqki? Enberg took over with Olsen. Curt Gowdy was the guy who did World series I first recall. Bowl games. CBS was Cotton Bowl. Sugar was ABC. NBC was rose and Orange Bowl. Then Fox came in and ruined it all. Pat Summerall was the first guy who was a explorer play by play guy. Even as a chicago fan his Nfc late games with Cowboys vs Skins. Giants vs Cards was him just giving you the basics. If you ate watching I just saw Staubach hit hill for 22 to redskins 47. Him letting crowd roar for 15 seconds then saying Staubach has hill to right, Pearson left. Newsome and Dorsett in split backs. Simple stuff cause they didn't have as many cameras and at times bottom of screen was cut off. Of course The Best of any sport was a guy who did ABC baseball, college basketball, olympics and first Monday night football guy. KEITH Jackson. That guy was a California guy and all that he did was ask to be just a college football guy. He loved going around the country showing up wendsday or Thursday and hanging out in Gainsville FL. Ann arbor Michigan. Lincoln Nebraska. He made everyone convinced that he is like us. He was the Mark Twain of College football.
Being a big I.U fan, I've watched this game many times. I can't believe how bad the referees were on both sides. Turner's last foul was a great block and the last two on Worthy were terrible!
Hence Bryant Gumbel's comments prior to the game on WHY the game was being played and why NBC televised it. And also a fun fact, the NCAA did not decide until about 7:45 PM ET or about 35 minutes before scheduled tip off to play the game
Matt Doherty is a friend of mine. I played against him in summer leagues home in New York. He’s a good man. I’m pretty sure if met him face to face and said that you loved to see him cry, he’d knock your teeth out.
Dominant a run as any tournament...despite 9 losses,..Hoosiers just got better and better...a testament to the true genious of Bobby Knight's coaching.
I wonder what time did the game start on NBC and when was the Oscar supposed to have star because normally the Oscars is out on the west coast which mean they normally start they telecast about 8 on ABC
In today's game 2024, the officials are horrible because they let the players get away with everything! The officials back then were horrible because they wouldn't let the players play. They called a ridiculous amount of fouls that didn't happen!
41:36 After James Worthy's 2nd foul, Knight calls Isiah Thomas over to talk to him. Moments later, Thomas stands behind Worthy to draw his 3rd foul. I wonder if Knight told him to stand there & draw Worthy's 3rd.
Last 5 Minutes of that game was both teams having the nonstandard making great shots over and over. Letting a 6'10 guy who can shoot from 20 feet getting nobody fronting him was just stupid. There have been many great games in tourney. Alot in first 2 rounds. 82 was 2 great teams. Villanova upsetting Hoyas was just cats shooting shots that they worked for. 87. Smarts Jumper. I can say 74 acc title game Nc state vs Maryland 2 ots. Then month later Semis Ucla vs State. Walton and Thompson. Go back 4 months and Irish break UCLA 88 game streak? Like Notre Dame or not Digger Phelps convinced NBC to televise it nationally . He even insisted Dick Enberg The Voice of UCLA basketball do the play by play. Ucla had dominated for 8 years and Ratings were bad. This was Phelps first recruited and he believed that only them winning this game would be how they were remembered. I was a huge boost for ratings and Irish who were #1 till next Saturday when they were blown out at Pauly pavilion by 30. A 1rst rd game 86 87? Bradley vs Auburn. Tigers with size up front vs Hersey Hawkins. A chicago public league guy who was 6'3 playing center against guys his career. Nobody is going to even offer him to play guard. As a sr. Avg 37.7 He has 18 points in first 10 Minutes. Then his teammates just jack up shots with him no shots for 5 minutes. He has 8 in last 5 to have 26 at half. Same in 2nd half he is leading break goes to hoop then dishing off. Only 4 in first 7 8 of 2nd then just ripped off 3 shots to put game into their hands. They again didn't even pass it to him that would have a double team at him leaving a guy wide open. He ended up with 46 points shooting 55% with 2 guys shooting same amount of shots he did shooting 25%. Thus Isiah guy was a year ahead of me. Saw him play in Illinois s best tournament in 70s . Aguirre was Sr. Cummings a raw 6'8 monster, Isiah was 5'10 at most. As soph. Doc Rivers was freshman. Playing in semis Thomas took a shot without passing in possession and coach yanked him with 6 to go in game. At 4 left they were still 2 ahead with the team running the iffense. Under 2 he gets the nod to go on his own. 2 3 feet beyond top of key he leaves this guy flat-footed with the low cross over he's to line with 6,66'7 guys closing the middle. Je just gets a step into lane and rise at them and fingerrolls in 7 8 ft from rim. Only St Joe's crowd cheered. Rest of mostly black crowd just saying What. No. Darn. Net trip down he does same but instead he hung and split doubleheader block underhanded it high off glass Ala Curry. Knight was not gut to take hardship guys. Yet after this game he was like. He is not going to learn anything from me.
IU was dominating during this run. They held LSU and UNC way below their points per average. They just got better as the season got later. Also they would’ve destroyed DePaul too if they would’ve gotten by St. Joseph.
Most amazing stat about Indiana's 1980-81 season - they lost to all four major non conference opponents they'd faced during the regular season (Kentucky, Notre Dame, Louisville and Clemson)! Then do a complete 360 and go 5-0 in the NCAA's! What a difference three months makes! The Big Ten conference slate became their boost of confidence in eventually playing to their capability! They had the talent and then at the right and perfect time, they jelled!
Beating DePaul wouldn't have been such a shock back then because the Blue Demons thrived on underachieving! They're still the only team ever to lose as a #1 seed in the first wkend three consecutive seasons, always playing down to the level of their opening opponent
I remember the yr after -'82! They had lost Aguirre to the draft and everyone thought they'd be better off with Terry Cummings leading the team because Aguirre was seen as a me, myself and I guy! And they get completely outplayed by an avg Boston College squad who only had one quality player in John Bagley (Michael Adams was only a freshman then for BC)! In hindsight, I don't c St Joe's win over them in '81 to be that great an upset because DePaul was only real good at one thing - CHOKING!
Indiana had the regionals on their home court. DePaul was the #1 overall seed. They play to the level of their competition. All those guys from Chicago grew up with Isiah Thomas. They would've stopped him. DePaul wins that game
True. When people call for games to be cancelled or postponed because of an (attempted) assassination (Kennedy, Reagan) they THINK they're respecting the president. They're REALLY respecting the assassin.
Carolina just couldn't stop Thomas, as a teen then man I loved college basketball and your team losing the championship game hurts. They lost to a very good team though.
I can't understand how a game was played after the Reagan shooting -- when the bullet landed an inch from his heart and others were critically wounded.
After the NCAA got news that the president was out of danger and was going to survive was when they made the decision to play the game. That decision was made at about 7:45 PM ET or 35 minutes before the scheduled start time(the title game started in the 8PM ET hour in 1981 as well as 1982 AND 1987)
Yet 230 marines were killed in a suicide bombing while asleep to protect Israeli folk. Raygun also ignored the CDC about aids. It was a guy disease. Arthur ashe was a famous tennis player who was black and it was ignored his getting aids cause he was a father who was mellow. Finally the Uof California Dan Francisco proved it was not transmitted by only homosexuality acts. It was being transmitted by intravenous drug use. So if you weren't guy the worst thing your friends and employer could know is you shoot herion, coke, speed. That is why it spread into heterosexual group. When a San Francisco pilotician tested positive the Way Ashe was ignored was cause of dental surgery. So in a town Of 750k all the vlood banks had to destroy the blood . Just cause Ronnie and Nancy told kids to say no to drugs.
Agreed. When Kennedy was killed in Dallas on a Friday afternoon, Pete Rozelle, the NFL commissioner, was critized by Everyone for the NFL playing games on Sunday. This shooting of Reagan happened the same day as the game. Should've been rescheduled
There was no three pointer in college basketball in 1981. At the time there was no special floor used for the Final Four. The regular arena floor was used and since the Spectrum was an NBA floor the NBA three point line was on the floor. In 1982 the Superdome wasn't an NBA arena and it looks like they may have gotten a special court for the Final Four and thus no Three Point Line. It wasn't til a few years later when special floors were used for the Final Four eliminating NBA lines and such.
True Story i was in grade 6 in 1980 - 1981 .. We were in Class an the Principal got on the Speaker an Announced that ronald reagan had just been Shot , Everyone in the Classroom got Quiet an Our Teacher Ms Cola , brought out the Tv an We Watched the events , when i got Home Later that Day i watched this Championship Game , the Game was Boring but i liked isaiah thomas for indiana an i like Al Wood for North Carolina .
NBC Thought Showing the Basketball Game would take their minds Of President Reagan being shot. But Reagan was a Tough dude He probably said Go Ahead with the game!!!
You don't see announcers court controversy anymore. Nowadays Dick Enberg's picture with him proudly wearing his IU jacket would be tweeted and retweeted and he'd have to apologize on the air.
In all seriousness with something as traumatic as an assassination attempt against the president and a decision to play a game and why televise it means you are likely to have prepared remarks rather than wing it.
That was a scary time March 30, 1981! I remember I was in third grade and right before school let out we were sent to our elementary cafeteria and watched the post shooting of Reagan news live! It was eerie! By the look on Bryant's face, he was probably having a hard time reporting and staying composed! I remember that like it was yesterday! Was born in Jan 1972 and for my class and generation that was the first real exposure we had to a national press sensation in our lives
Sounds like a weak attempt to slight Gumbel who most acknowledge as one of the most intellectual and bright journalist of that time. It would have made sense to have a prepared statement from the network during that time.
The early officiating is brutal. Mystery fouls and phantom travels. The refs used to think that they had to “control” the game. I’m glad they cut that crap out. No one is watching to see you blow the whistle.
Not phantom travels. They called traveling properly. Today they walk to the damn store every time they receive the ball in their hands. Zero discipline.
I was too young to remember the day of the assassination attempt on former President Reagan. I was watching this game under quarantine. I never realized until today the assassination attempt was on the same day as the NCAA men's championship and the Oscars. It seems like the end of March is a bit late for the Oscars. But, obviously, that is when it occurred back then
I wasn't too young to remember! Was 9 years old at the time! In third grade! My classmates and I were in our lines awaiting our school buses to head home! And all of sudden we, over the loud speaker, were told to proceed to our school cafeteria awaiting breaking news! The principal, once we were all seated, tuned in the TV on one of those three level TV stands that were big back in the day with the wheels! And that's when all three major stations were discussing what was happening as they gathered info! We stayed there for like an hour before we were dismissed! So I vividly recollect that afternoon! First major US crisis of my generation that I'm old enough to have taken in
In Daytona Beach spring break. What a shifty shot. Raygun gave trickledown economics which was just a huge tax break for rich that still is in play. Like another guy he ignored the CDC and just ignored aids. Like covid.
I remember Going to Religion when President Reagan was shot. We had a special Confession and I Then Father Boyle said to me " I want you to say a prayer now for the president got shot" I shook my head Yes Said my prayer and miss Fonda Carol my teacher said good boy and she kissed me on my head.
